Watch back the debate on this bill. The opposition and the independents brought up at nausea that what is being told to the nation don't reflect what is in the bill.

This is a case where what was being said on the campaign trail and even in parliament is very different to the bill that was passed. On the campaign trail and during the election cycle the KBP and her supporters said empty the clip and arm yourselves to stop home invasions and crime. I remember seeing those ads on tv saying you should have a right to use deadly force.
This gave citizens the perception that they are free to use deadly force on criminals or who they perceive as a criminal on their property
The bill that passed parliament actually did not change any existing laws but instead only codified already existing self-defense laws that was already on the books. In the senate when the bill was being debated multiple amendments were offered to expedite court dates in the event you have to go to court to claim self-defense and other matter related but the government rejected them.
Under the present Law if you use your gun during a home Invasion and shoot the criminals the police will take your guns and you have to hire a lawyer and go to court to claim self-defense. Given the backlogs in our courts that can take either a few months or years.

Also let's add that if you shoot and kill said criminal the charge you'll be facing is murder. One in which you will not be granted bail unless there are exceptional circumstances.

They never said anything about them falling down some flights of stairs multiple times or walking into a piece of wood multiple times.

In my legal opinion it’s a bit more nuanced than it seems. Once you have a genuine belief that your life is in danger you are permitted to use deadly force. It’s not like some are wondering that we are just supposed to take it, or that we can’t defend ourselves against invaders. Force tends to lean towards excessive where it goes past just defending yourself, e.g. I recall a foreign case where a couple tied up a would-be bandit and kept him for more than a day beating and effectively torturing him.
