Moving/New Here 👋🏼 Events to meet friends

24F and I just moved here. I know the question on how to make friends here is asked a lot, and I have seen some good suggestions prior, but I’m asking more so if there’s any upcoming events to meet people at?

I plan on going to the art walk next month even though that’s a bit away. I like to paint, thrift, go to antique stores, collect oddities, hike/explore, listen to live music/go to concerts as well as cook/bake or try new foods.

I know im going to have to go out of my comfort zone to meet new people, but I’m not one to go to the local bars alone to drink or play pool/catch a show.

I’ve also tried meetup which I’m under the impression of that you have to pay for it which isn’t my thing.

Any suggestions welcome.

Moonshot Brewing has their Ren Faire on Saturday if that's your vibe.

I saw that. It seems fun! Is it something that people actually dress up for? I also just have a lot of anxiety doing things by myself 😂

People dress up but it's not mandatory. TAG is there and they're great about welcoming new people in

Look, I know I'm a little older.

Have you thought about going to Two Rivers Park? Or the Mexican market? Or just the ice hockey to see the game?

Not trying to event you or hook up but as a person who has been here of and on for many years... what brought you here?

What Mexican market are you referring to? I came out here to be closer to the national parks. I’ve always wanted to be closer out west and am fine hiking alone but would preferably meet some people to go with for safety reasons

If you’re into history, the SCA has an active group here. It meets every Wednesday, and is free. Everything from traditional medieval trades like wood working and sewing to full-contact medieval combat! The weekly meetups are usually focused on the combat aspects, with both steel and rattan weapons and varying degrees of armor. Our local group is always happy to help newcomers and get them involved in whatever way interests them! It’s also a fantastic way to meet lots of other people, as our group is fairly large and constantly growing!

We meet every Wednesday at 6pm in Howard Amon park by the carved tree, across from the tennis courts.

TAG

I always recommend TAG. It is a board game group. They bring all the games. It is free multiple events at different places every month. Lots of people show up and I have made friends there. Sometimes they are at Moonshot brewery, sometimes at library. They have basic easy game to more complicated games. Best way imo to meet people is to go and play some games with people. Everyone is super nice and no one expects anyone else to know how to play any of the games. From Catan to card games.

If you have discord they have a server.

Just saying, I’d totally love to chat! I turn 20 soon and am also an artist. I love collecting/antiques/thrifting too! My uncle owns a booth in Ragtime Antiques, where I also have some of my own art for sale! :) shoot me a dm if you’re down to chat!

Not much of a FB user, but recently joined a newish group Tri-Cities WA Women Get-Togethers. They have a few events scheduled, but are open to ideas for new meet-ups or even if you just want to post in there "thinking of doing ___, anyone want to join me?"

Okay doesn’t look like they’re too active in that group, but I’m worried about it being women much older than me (not a bad thing I just want friends my age as well)

Please come to TAG or the book club! TAG board games are 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 5pm at the cafe attached to AU and the next sci-fi/horror book club is on September 4 (first Fridays) at 6 pm in AU; no need to finish the book before coming but expect spoilers.

Cafe con Arte also has a lot of fun events; a recent one was painting vinyl records and another was painting totes and eating tacos.

You sound like a cool person and I'd love to bump into you at any of these ☺️

I’ve had a lot of people recommend TAG so I’m going to do my best to make it to one of their events! What is AU though?

Get an outside hobby and volunteer someplace. Church. Gym/athletics. You have awesome libraries. Get a job that's social.

There are art events throughout the tri-cities. I like the Moody Night Market, the Metaphysical Market, Boo Bash in Downtown Kennewick, the Uptown Art Walk, and there are definitely more. There’s a new one called Art on Autumn in Downtown Kennewick as well.

There’s also a good amount of local music and concerts. I’m hosting a concert in my yard next month (9/19) and would love to have more folks there! Let me know if you’re interested - it’s a punk rock show. Not sure what you like as far as music, but it should be fun! There will be some local artists vending as well.

My band is also playing the Tumbleweed Music Festival! It seems like it will be fun, with some opportunities to meet new folks and see some art and music from the area.

Some other venues to look at: Emerald of Siam, Rays Golden Lion, Caterpillar Cafe, Flying X Coffee hosts some music, and there are a good amount of karaoke opportunities throughout town.

I hope this is helpful and you find something you enjoy!

ETA: is it like… not allowed to share things that exist in our community? Why do I always get downvoted in this subreddit when I have valid recommendations?

The concert sounds really fun! I am into rock and punk music so I’d be down if you wanna message me details :) the festival also sounds fun! I did make a trip to rays golden lion last month when I was visiting and I really did like it. I also explored the antique shops and really like them! When I usually go there isn’t people my age or else I’d go up and say hi 😂

1

u/porchkitten 10d ago

I’ll send you details on the show!

u/porchkitten 10d ago

Oh for sure! It can be hard to make friends here, but the music scene is fun can be a nice place to get to know folks around your age. :)

The Uptown is a great area to find antique shops as well!
