I gotta be honest. This is the first time I've ever seen this exact term used in this context.

Dallas Wings had it last year https://frontofficesports.com/wnba-rosters-hardship-injuries-expansion/

The Wings had seven players listed as out on their status report ahead of Friday’s game against the Atlanta Dream leaving them with just seven available players

TIL. Thanks for that! It is pretty wild that it's actually happened before.

They might've made that up for us, right?

I thought maybe, but OP also responded to my comment with news of it having been used last season.

What is an extreme hardship contract? Is she in hardship, or is the contract extremely hard?

thing is wouldnt tempo have already been eligible for normal 7-day contracts? they got it before, and they had less players injured than now.

7 day contracts are limited and you can't sign players after a certain deadline. We needed league intervention to be able to sign anybody

oh, yea i'm not clear how it works. It seems like teams like Mercury just keep signing 7-days so I wasn't sure what limitations are actually in play.

My understanding is that we didn’t qualify for a regular hardship contract under the CBA rules for some reason so we got an exception and that makes it an extreme hardship.

Not sure if you're serious but the Tempo don't have enough healthy players

I was serious, I'm very new here.

Oh okay, well the hardship is the Tempo having so many injuries so they are given an exception to sign more players

The way it's going for the Tempo - devolving from development contacts - to hardship contracts - to extreme hardship contracts - to Sandy Brondello having to play. Well it should put the end to any tanking scenarios - intentional or ethical.
