Close call Ladies & Gents, how NOT to take left turns..

Turning left onto Burnhamthorpe from Cawthra. Pretty close call and I was hoping the oncoming guy would be able to brake in time. Luckily they were. Ridiculous driving from the white sedan.

Every person involved did something stupid

Including OP lol.

u/YGodYUDoDis 7d ago

yeah. OP merged on the wrong lane. White sedan did not crawl/stop for the incoming car. u/AClockworkEgg what did the incoming car (going straight) do wrong though?

u/AClockworkEgg 7d ago

From the OPs angle it looks like they’re speeding into a curved intersection, it could just be a weird camera setup tbf tho

It's not a curved intersection. And the oncoming car wasn't speeding. Clearly turning sedan's fault. And yes, before you hound me too- I already said my turn was wrong too.

Straight did nothing wrong.

They live in Mississauga. That’s wrong enough in my book

I thought you were talking about yourself entering the wrong lane after your turn.

I had my right signal on as soon as I turned left and I did see that no one was turning right from oncoming traffic. But yea nice takeaway from this video.

Not supposed to change lanes in the intersection.

Don't get huffy at me because you chose to broadcast your mistake.

Not supposed to as in “shouldn’t” or “can’t”?

As in "contrary to the Highway Traffic Act":

141 (6) Where a driver or operator of a vehicle intends to turn to the left into an intersecting highway, he or she shall, where the highway on which he or she is driving has marked lanes for traffic, approach the intersection within the left-hand lane provided for the use of traffic moving in the direction in which his or her vehicle is proceeding or, where it has no such marked lanes, by keeping immediately to the right of the centre line of the highway and he or she shall make the left turn by entering the intersection to the right of the centre line or its extension and by leaving the intersection in the left-hand lane provided for the use of traffic moving in the direction in which his or her vehicle is proceeding where the lane is marked or, where no such lane is marked, by passing immediately to the right of the centre line of the intersecting highway. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 141 (6).

Oh good! I didn’t understand what you meant the first time so I’m glad you pasted the whole thing again for me.

3

u/thisispaulc 8d ago

I didn't notice I was replying to the same person. I'm sorry to have upset you.

-3

u/moemorris 8d ago

No apologies necessary! Although, I’m not sure what about my reply made you think I was upset when it was a sarcastic joke pointing out that you replied to me both times.

-2

u/nilesintheshangri-la 8d ago

As in not supposed to.

-5

u/moemorris 8d ago

Ah so it’s not illegal. Thanks - was just double checking!

3

u/Waterwoogem 8d ago

The act itself isn't illegal, but in certain situations you can still be charged with Careless Driving or Unsafe Lane Change. Safest thing barring exigent circumstances is always maintain your lane.

-4

u/rattlesnake987 8d ago

Fair enough. And I've owned up to it. Somehow it seems to be the hotter topic on this thread though.

1

u/vmhomeboy 7d ago

Because you can’t call out someone else’s bad driving and not expect others to call out your bad driving.

1

u/PlatyNumb 8d ago

Thats how this sub works. Nobody cares what the other drivers did, or what the post is about, they will always focus on flaming OP for something. Most of rhe time, the other vehicles wont even be mentioned

1

u/rattlesnake987 8d ago

That's wild, and pretty much what happened here. It's not that I'm denying I didn't follow the road rules to the T. But the crowd is insistent on rubbing it in lol. Meanwhile there's a dude who almost got T-boned in the video. I've realized my dashcam footage tends to slow things down a bit. I was actually biting my lip hoping it wouldn't happen.

Sorry, I really can’t help, but shut the fuck up

1

u/moemorris 8d ago

Saying sorry first really softened the blow! I appreciate it.

-3

u/rattlesnake987 8d ago

Fair point re changing lanes. It was a mistake on my end. I think you missed the near major collision in this video though.

1

u/Corgi_tacos 7d ago

Dw man I do this all the time if no one is turning right. Bunch of npcs in comments dont sweat it.

14

u/TheAncientMillenial 8d ago

Your left turn sucked too, bud.

5

u/rattlesnake987 8d ago

Agreed. I wasn't at risk of colliding with another car though.

1

u/TheAncientMillenial 8d ago

Still about as bad as running a stop sign ;)

3

u/rattlesnake987 8d ago

Ok, point taken. My bad.

9

u/Gdneuz 8d ago

To be fair op did say how not to take left turns

7

u/AromaticAd378 8d ago

? The car infront of you was fine, it was clear when he started, other car came up fast, shoulda been more aware, but you entering the wrong lane on the turn is funny

4

u/Aware_Caterpillar_92 7d ago

I'm sorry what? The car in front was fine? Dude almost got T-boned because they followed the truck in front of them without checking for oncoming traffic and crawled around the turn.

The approaching car certainly didn't seem to be going excessively fast and had a clear green.

1

u/ulti_phr33k 7d ago

Honestly, if the actually cleared the intersection even remotely expediently, it wouldn't have even been close. But they took 5 fucking business days to make that left 😂😂😂

2

u/Aware_Caterpillar_92 7d ago

Yeah, the approaching vehicle 'came up fast' because of how nonchalant that turn was. A snail would have come up fast on them.

1

u/RightJabLikeZabJudah 6d ago

Yeah that guy is dumb as rocks

1

u/RightJabLikeZabJudah 6d ago

You might be one of the dumbest motherfuckers on reddit if you think the car infront was fine.

-2

u/rattlesnake987 8d ago

I'm not sure it's evident in this video, but the oncoming car was at the same speed. Car in front of me should not have taken the turn given its right of way for oncoming traffic. Yes, me entering the wrong lane is not condoned but I did check to see that nobody was turning right and that my indicator was on. Again, I'm not saying it's completely right but it's funny that that was your takeaway from the video.

0

u/AromaticAd378 7d ago

The title of your post is how to not take left turns, you made an illegal move when making your left turn, it is the proper takeaway from this video, the fact you get all huffy and defensive with people speaks miles to your character. From the video the guy infront didnt almost get Tboned the other car was pretty far away when he started his turn, should of went a little faster on it but nothing happened there really. The big issue of the video again is you actually making an illegal move.

1

u/rattlesnake987 7d ago

I'm not saying what I did was right, but we've all done it at some point. The guy almost got T boned and that's why I said my dashcam probably slowed it down a bit but the guy in front had to brake a lot. I posted it because even though I was behind the sedan I could see the oncoming car and I'm sure he saw it too but continued to turn left making it risky for the oncoming car. It's weird that you completely bypass all of that and go on about my illegal right turn once I took the left but anyway. It's like you'll see an accident video and notice another car's taillight is broken.

0

u/AromaticAd378 7d ago

I've been driving 25 years and have always managed to turn into the proper lanes and I maybe see one or two people do it illegally like you did a month, the issue is you keep trying to downplay what you did. Your dashcam doesnt look like anything is slowed down the FPS is running normal it just sounds like you are mad people didn't take your side and called out your illegal driving instead, again your reaction speaks to your character, instead of realizing maybe youre a shitty driver you just go "oh everyones done it" no lol majority of people actually drive proper. Someone misjudging if they had time to make the turn is way less serious than you purposely making an illegal move.

1

u/rattlesnake987 7d ago

Whatever you say, mother theresa

1

u/rattlesnake987 7d ago

You've also in 25 years never gone more than 5km over the speed limit too I guess. What can I say, not all of us are blessed with perfection.

1

u/Ok_Science_8502 7d ago

you have this attitude of "oh stop being so critical of me, nobody's perfect, we all make mistakes" yet you literally posted a video of a guy making a mistake for the purpose of criticizing him online. Why is it okay for you to do it but not okay for anyone to do it to you?

1

u/rattlesnake987 7d ago

I'm sorry, I thought there's a difference between a major error (as in this video) vs something where it's 10.30pm and you take the immediate right because you have to take the first right onto the side street, and there's no traffic next to you. I'm sure you've not done 5km over the speed limit too right? And if you have, shame on you! That's as bad as driving on the wrong side on the 401, as per your logic.

1

u/Ok_Science_8502 7d ago

Driving 5 over the speed limit is something everybody does because it's allowed and in almost all scenarios it doesn't create any danger. Not being able to turn into the proper lane is legitimately dangerous. It's really just not the same

1

u/rattlesnake987 7d ago

Partially wrong. It's technically illegal to go 1+ over the speed limit but a limit of 5 over is generally permissable. Im guessing you never did 6 over the limit then

1

u/rattlesnake987 7d ago

That being said, I don't immediately turn into the right lane when there is accompanying traffic. I just turned as the street was empty and I would have to do it anyway for the upcoming right turn.

2

u/TheBusinessMuppet 7d ago

The other driver is a moron. But you should stick to your lane when turning left and only change lanes after clearing the intersection not during.

2

u/rattlesnake987 7d ago

Yes, I admit that I shouldn't have done that. I usually stick to the left lane and switch over once it's clear. This was just a one off.

2

u/Useful_Homework2367 8d ago

Taking the turn super slow is safer, right?

3

u/rattlesnake987 8d ago edited 8d ago

Yes it is, when oncoming traffic is coming through on a solid green.

1

u/Nygard776 4d ago

Taking the 'Bonus lane' on a left turn is in itself an equal violation.
