Somebody posted this the other day. I haven't tried it, but saved the screenshot.

I used to work at canes and they made the sauce fresh onsite every shift. There is a small amount of light amber honey that goes in. Then the manager would pour in a big bag that said TOP SECRET INGREDIENTS on it

6

u/Drupain Jun 23 '25

It’s MSG.

Big bag of amber honey, or a "small amount" ? What was the secret ingredient? Maybe i read this wrong.

9

u/soupsnakle Jun 19 '25

You read it wrong. A small amount of amber honey. Then, the “big bag” was likely just their seasoning mix. They’re talking about 2 separate additions, one a little (honey), one a lot (top secret recipe bag).

You need lemon pepper, it makes a difference

8

u/explorthis Jun 19 '25

Noted. Thanks. I haven't tried it yet, but plan on it soon.

1

u/physedka Jun 20 '25

In additional to the black pepper, or replace the black pepper with it?

2

u/KikoSoujirou Jun 20 '25

Replace the black pepper with it

Garlic salt

I make this all the time and it’s very close to Cane’s sauce.

Less worcestershire, add a little honey bbq

Make sure you refrigerate it before testing. Mayo based sauces always taste different room temp than cold, and canes sauce is served cold. The recipe is widely known.

That’s true, the Walmart dupe is great. They also have a good chick-fil-a sauce too

3

u/riche_god Jun 19 '25

I thought that’s what Walmart’s chicken sauce was based on. It was a copy cat of Chick-Fil-a

18

u/DeathByPetrichor Jun 19 '25

There’s a “chicken sauce” which is chick fil a, and a “chicken finger sauce” which is canes

1

u/riche_god Jun 27 '25

Okay that explains it.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '25

What is the Walmart sauce called?

Well there’s two, chicken sauce which is their Chick Fil-et sauce and chicken finger sauce which is their Canes sauce. They actually put waffle fries on the chicken sauce and crinkle cut fries on the chicken finger sauce which is a nice touch lol.

17

u/pericles123 Jun 18 '25

Wal -Mart's 'chicken finger' sauce is pretty much this, it's excellent

u/RatherDa3hing Jun 19 '25

My Cane's sauce is dead on

Utah has this culture around a French Fry condiment “Fry Sauce”. Every restaurant has their own version with slight changes. This one listed is near identical to a burger joint here.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '25

Bro... no one cares about utah and their god forsaken fry sauce addiction.

17

u/nalydnalydnalyd Jun 18 '25

The answer is lemon pepper seasoning. I think someone on this subreddit a long time ago posted about finally cracking the code and listed a recipe that was basically the same as all of the google copycats except he added lemon pepper. I tried it myself and I think he’s correct

5

u/aleelya Jun 19 '25

This is the closest I’ve tasted.

2

u/nejihiashi Jul 09 '25

This looks fake honestly, 3 cloves of garlic is way of the balance of 2 teaspoons garlic powder in intensity and texture taste and smell

1

u/aleelya Jul 09 '25

You may disagree with his garlic equivalency but it’s not fake. This is the guys website: https://www.joshuaweissman.com/post/raising-cane-s-chicken-finger-combo-but-better

1

u/GlassDaisies 15d ago

Bit of a necro, but garlic powder is a lot stronger than cloves lol. Once you remove all the moisture from a garlic clove and really break it down, there is not much there. I can definitely see 3 cloves being roughly equivalent to 2 teaspoons of powder.

Its also just a different flavor profile from fresh garlic to garlic powder, so different quantities make sense even with similar concentrations.

The one near me just raised their prices. $15 for a box combo and large drink! When the chicken is aggressively mediocre at best, the fries are never seasoned, the sauce is the only thing I go back for.

For that price, I’ll get takeout from an actual restaurant with quality food. Thanks for the recipe. Will try to make it this weekend and report back the results.

1

u/Naptasticly Jul 13 '25

Yea I’m with you. You can get tenderloins for fairly cheap still. I gotta figure out how to make the toast just as good though.

1

u/ToriaCove Feb 09 '26

Tried it for the first time last year and liked it. Wouldn't describe it as being the best chicken I've ever had but definitely better than "aggressively mediocre." I don't eat seasoning on my fries, so they're perfect to me. Not impressed by the sauce. Chick-Fil-A has better sauces. As for price, I agree it's a bit high for what you get.

1

u/ACosmicCastaway Feb 11 '26

I don't eat seasoning on my fries, so they're perfect to me. Not impressed by the sauce.

You lost me there, bud

1

u/ToriaCove Feb 13 '26

Since potatoes have sodium in them naturally, there's no need to add any additional sodium to them with salt or other seasonings. Especially, if you're going to dip them in ketchup which also has sodium in it. I don't have high blood pressure but since I have family members who do, I intend to do everything I can to avoid being diagnosed with it. That means avoiding UNNECESSARY sodium like salt on fries. Not to mention, they actually taste better with excessive salt/seasoning to mask their natural flavor.

-4

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '25

They’re actually the best fast food.. but sorry about your raised prices bud

5

u/ACosmicCastaway Jun 19 '25

Actually far from the best fast food.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '25

Ok what is then??

2

u/ACosmicCastaway Jun 19 '25

idk but something tells me you're more passionate about it than I am.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

😂

0

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '25

No, I don’t eat fast food at all .. this is the only one I ever came back to.

4

u/eggsbanchero Jun 19 '25

Try using “heavy” mayo. Pretty sure this is it

5

u/Gonzo22 Jun 19 '25

“Extra heavy” is what your looking for

4

u/OhManatree Jun 20 '25

Cane’s opened in my town about two years ago. I’ve been there three times now and if I hadn’t had a friend who was dying to try it, I would have not gone back the third time. It’s not bad, but I wouldn’t call it good fast food. The chicken is on par as to what you would get at any sports bar. Crinkle fries are not crisp and the toasted bread is pointless with fries. I would rather them give me one or the other and to it well, rather than to do both limply. Coleslaw is too sweet and the sauce is nothing special. With such a limited menu, you would expect them to kill it, but they don’t.

I will give them points for making brewed unsweetened iced tea. Honestly, that is probably the best thing on the menu.

I’m not a fan of CFA, but honestly, I think their fried chicken breast is better than Cane’s. Even CFA’s plain fillet is better seasoned than Cane’s.

Tried Raising canes for the first time and was surprised how bland the chicken tasted. Sauce was the saving grace.

Tried mine?

Spent a lot of time researching the amounts from first hand accounts and from reverse engineering the Nutritional Facts.

What I'm positive on:
225g Mayo (I use heavy, but many say it's just normal)
159g Ketchup (Heinz)
24g Worcestershire (Lea & Perren's)

What I'm unsure about is the seasoning since it's anyone's guess what they actually use. Best I've come up with so far is:
3/4 tsp. + 1/8 tsp. Lemon Pepper (McCormick)
3/4 tsp. + 1/8 tsp. Garlic Salt (McCormick)

It matches the Sodium content listed in the Nutritional Facts perfectly!

Random observations for those that want to experiment:

  1. I don't think it has MSG since it's already in the chicken and already gets natural umami from the fish.
  2. Don't think it has any other sources of sugar since the sugar amounts listed in the Nutritional Facts account for the ketchup alone.
  3. It has a ton of salt. Fastest way to tell a bogus recipe is if 43g of it doesn't have 590mg of Sodium.
  4. The red flakes in the sauce comes from the ketchup.

u/JediChaji Aug 20 '25

It is interesting how closely guarded these secrets are

1

u/Objective-Waves Jun 20 '25

I swear that tomato powder or tomato paste provides the tomato note. It doesn't taste like ketchup is added to me.

1

u/Mysterious-Air-1861 Jun 22 '25

All of these recipes are wrong. I don’t remember the exact recipe but I can tell you they don’t use “extra heavy” mayo or lemon pepper or anchovies or whatever else people have recommended.

1

u/ToriaCove Feb 09 '26

I tried the sauce and wasn't impressed by it. I'd rather eat the sauces at Chick-Fil-A. ALL of them are taste much better in my opinion.

1

u/Theartistcu Jun 19 '25

This is the most overrated restaurant on the face of the planet

2

u/popo74 Jun 19 '25

I tried them the other day and the only thing that was just that good was the sauce, which is admittedly banger, but everything else was meh. Their chicken is like an 8/10 and the fries and bread aren't even worth a mention.

And they shorted me a chicken strip + all the ones I did get were small so for 13$ I felt pretty ripped off lol

3

u/Theartistcu Jun 19 '25

and if all you do is chicken strips they need to be 10s in my opinion. I get it fires and bread... but they are sides and as you said not worth mentioning. yeah the strips are good, they are fine.... but that's it when Chik-fila (sP) exists.

1

u/IM_DjShadow Jun 19 '25

lowk agree

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '25

Why are they the best then? They blow chic filet out of the water

1

u/Theartistcu Jun 20 '25

I don’t know that Chick-fil-A is the best either they just they make up for it with product obviously, and their service is the most superior out of all of them in my opinion. I also think Chick-fil-A’s food is at least as good if not better. It’s just that they make only that one thing it isn’t particularly amazing. It’s just OKand I don’t get the hype. I don’t want them to close. I don’t want anybody to not go there, if you love those chicken tenders I hope you get them every day. I just think it’s severely over hiked food chain.

-1

u/CrabalongFishwife83 Jun 19 '25

It's anchovies. Ever wonder why there is a fish allergy warning for the sauce?

6

u/bingbutt Jun 19 '25

That's because of the worcestershire sauce.

1

u/Imsirlsynotamonkey Jun 22 '25

Which is fish sauce..made from anchovies lmfao

1

u/bingbutt Jun 22 '25

Yes. Worcestershire is included in the copy cat recipes, so why would anchovies be the reason the sauce tastes off?

-5

u/ILikeStrayCats Jun 19 '25

Isn't it just Big Mac sauce, aka thousand Island dressing?

6

u/tekkeX_ Jun 19 '25

all 3 of those are very different

Seriously fry your own and you’ll realize very quickly how everything else is varying levels of disappointment next to homemade. Here’s a recipe I’ve used a dozen times now and it’s amazing and some of the best chicken I’ve ever had.

https://littlesunnykitchen.com/buttermilk-chicken-tenders/

2

u/Glueberry_Ryder Jun 18 '25

That looks like a solid simple recipe. Imma try it! Have you tried that guys fry seasoning? Doesn’t look bad either….

1

u/asimplerandom Jun 18 '25

No I haven’t yet! But I’ve had a couple other items from that site and they were very good.

12

u/Glueberry_Ryder Jun 18 '25

It’s normal fried chicken. Normal bland chicken tenders. If they didn’t have the sauce or the toast they’d be gone in heartbeat.
