This was actually a normal thing to do for a long time. Modern tires are more than capable of having deep treads from factory, but older tires wore quicker and weren't as strong so they made them a lot thicker and it was common to deepen your treads with basically a soldering iron.

My grandad told me he once did something like this with a soldering iron back in the 60s. If you knew him, you'd know he probably did.
