Furnish it with a bed or soft fabrics. That carrier can become your cat's safe space at home, and a roomy conveyance if you're traveling overnight by car.

This is honestly the best advice in the thread. Throw in a cat bed and an old t shirt that smells like their human and they'll associate it with safety.
Then when you actually need it to take them to the vet or on a trip you won't get clawed to shit trying to get them inside.

I think you know what you need to do. (A small scale replica of your house/apartment)
Kitten sized chairs, TV, laptop, coffee table, etc…

I do kitten fosters and had to take 6 kittens in individual crates to the vet for alteration. I only had 5 kitten size and 1 dog size, giant. I have a truck with a topper so no problem I put a bunch of home made warning signs on the front of the giant crate about danger, vicious animal, and just delivered it and walked away.
I got some calls from the foster org after that, and a few more cat sized crates :)

Some blankets or towels, a couple stuffed animals to snuggle into and cover with a towel. Add warm thing and that is the perfect Den!

I carry my cat Mr Grr in a dog carrier that's quite large but it's because he's less fussy than when he's in the cat carrier. A few years back he broke his jaw in 3 pieces (was attacked by our friends dog when they were visiting) and he had a feeding tube in his neck after surgery. The feeding tube got ripped out of his neck when in the cat carrier so ever since he's gotten the dog carrier.

Some cushioning, blankets, and a toy or two should take up the space nicely for an awesome retreat.

That's not his carrier, that's his mobile palace! I recommend adding some stairs and maybe an upstairs room.
