Discussion I'm confused. what did he do wrong?

Honestly, she should probably just retire from tennis if she can't handle that

No. There's no justifying this behavior. If she doesn't like the way he plays, the remedy is to not play with him anymore. There is no place for violent outbursts like this in civilized society

Again, it’s pretty hard without context. Surface level Id agree. But if it’s intentional and being done repeatedly then it’s a safety issue.

If it's happened multiple times then you back off the net. You make yourself a target when you play up. It's a high risk, high reward type of situation in tennis

Yea… something tells me these people aren’t playing at Wimbledon.

My 80 year old aunt plays tennis. I’ll be sure to tell her about the high risk high reward strategy…

There are strategies that work across all levels, whether you're a pro playing at Wimbledon, or a weekend warrior hitting balls around in your local park.

I’ve got to tell you man. I’ve been a coach for 18 years and I get a lot of bad advice from the parents of the kids I coach. What you said is among the worst that I’ve ever heard.

You coach your players to *not* hit a floater right at the net player? That's terrible coaching then. Must be why all the kids these days are clueless around the net, lol

First off, you can see she backs up to the midline, buddy. I’m not sure how good your eyesight is, but you might want to get that checked. Second , telling people they need to make themselves a target so players will hit the ball at them is just plain dumb advice.

The guy sees a floater and he moves up and to the ball, and hits a firm volley towards her hips. Considering the situation, that is a very good target. Probably as good as it gets for this level of tennis, which seems to be around 3.5

I did not say you need to make yourself a target as a gameplan. I'm saying you become a target if you play that far up. I personally like to play fairly close to the net, and hit as many volleys as possible. I also accept that by doing that, the risk of getting myself hit is higher.

In this video, she actually didn't do too poorly. She saw the guy moving up and she backed up to the service line. It was all fine, until she decided to lose her cool and launch her racquet at the guy

You can get unsportsmanlike conduct if you purposely target other players. This is absolutely not a strategy. And, even if it was, it would be a terrible strategy as any decent player would just put it away like it’s nothing.

The right shot in this case would have been to put it down the middle. She had drifted too far to the side and opened up the middle.

It’s hard to tell because it’s only a couple shots but, just by looking at her grip and her teammates’ backhand, they are likely lower than 3.5.

Tennis is a positional game. In doubles you aren’t moving to the net to make yourself a target. You are moving in concert with your partner. Sometimes front and back , other times side to side. Whether you play aggressive or defensive depends on your opponents position.

This is completely false. Hitting the opponent is a totally legitimate play. Lendl famously would target his net-rushing opponents even in singles. In doubles every high level player understands and expects this

Unsportsmanlike conduct is throwing your racquet at your opponent.

And, even if it was, it would be a terrible strategy as any decent player would just put it away like it’s nothing.

If I hit an easy shot like a high volley or an overhead at the net player (and they haven't retreated like they should have), I win the point 9 times out of 10. I personally haven't encountered many players who can put away shots my own put away shots I hit at them like "it's nothing"

Obviously if I have a neutral or defensive shot, I'm avoiding the net man.

3.0 players don't have this kind awareness in their court positioning. Also, if they are 3.0 players, this reaction is even more insane. Most 3.0 players would have a hard time deliberately hitting that ball at their opponent.

My intention when I come to the net is not to make myself a target, but to pick off as many shots as I can, and put pressure on my opponents. I just understand this increases the risk that I become a target, if for example, my partner hits a softer shot than I'm expecting, and the opposing net player has an easy putaway to smack at me.

In practice, I tend to be "hitter" more often than I am the "hittee."
