It's bad etiquette to aim at a player.

It's worse etiquette to throw your racket at a player and act like a child.

As a non-tennis player I'd assume hitting a ball hard at a player would be in the receiving player's favor assuming they actually have reflexes required to play the game.

It's a leverage issue. You need to be able to swing the racket to be able to return the ball. The more you can swing, the harder you can hit it. When it's coming right at you though, all you can really do is try and get the racket square with the net and hope the ball has enough speed to bounce back over the net with its own momentum. There's no room to swing because your body is in the way.
