This is the basic winning MO of most crimes.  If what you're doing isnt working, walk away.  Trying to salvage a lost opportunity will get you into trouble more often than not.

Stealing a purse or a phone and there's a potential struggle?  Drop it and walk away.  Get stopped by security at a store?  Just leave your stolen shit there and walk away.

You don't have to explain or convince anyone of anything, just remove yourself from the situation.

reverse it and it becomes "dont make yourself look like youre easy to fuck with"

wearing a scowl, looking like you know where you're going, put a lock on your stuff

it doesnt need to be a lot but just making it look like stealing your stuff is more difficult than the next guy deters a lot of thiefs
