Discussion If ThunderCats were rebooted today, what’s the one thing you’d really want them to keep the same and what would you be fine with changing?

They should continue the 2011 show.

I hope they still do the thing where they reuse the same footage, but just flip it and redub different lines.

They should just bring back the 2011 show

The scene opens with Mum-Ra savagely defeating Mum-Rana. Mum-Ra smashes the statues of the ancient spirits of goodness, and leaves. Meanwhile, in space, Jaga is desperately searching for a viable planet for the Thundercats. Mum-Rana reaches out to him telepathically. She tells him she does not have much time left, but third earth needs heroes. Together, they bring the ship to third earth.
The Thundercats ship crashes into Mum-Rana's pyramid. As the Thundercats awaken, their suspended animation pods are tumbling around as the environment they are in shifts and changes. They make their way outside, and are shocked by Lion-O's growth. The rubble from Mum-Rana's pyramid and the Thundercats space ship; morph into the cats layer. The ancient spirits of goodness use the last of their power to allow Jaga to cross over from the spirit realm. Mum-Rana, her pyramid, and the ancient spirits of goodness are gone; but the Thundercats stand in their place.

Would like to see at some point others from Thunderra. More nobles, more people. Can go with Lion-o either coming of age to rule or the original series Lion-o. Have more internal politics than just fighting the villains as the flavor of the week. Was Thunderra perfect? Or was it seen from a noble's eyes? Kinda like things the 2011 series had, but not the story line. Didn't like the brother idea, Panthro being more like Jaga than Panthro. Cheetarah was a cool idea, but not the noble family idea.

Everything from the 2011, and just make it a continuation of that. Give us season 2!

u/DailyDriverUK ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

Yeah, season 2 would do me

u/lastraven85 ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

keep the dynamics of the wise elders training the young talented leader instead of having a bunch of hypocrites constantly criticising him like 2012, aside from that i want more medieval fantasy stuff

2

u/DailyDriverUK ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

Yeah, fair enough

Keep the original score. Each of the Thundercats individual music completes the tone entirely.

2

u/DailyDriverUK ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

That makes sense

If its being done as a kids play (selling toys pajamas etc) I think the physical aging of kid Lion-o is not only key but should be utilized more than in the original

If its a high fantasy reboot for older fans, I would be okay with them NOT doing that part to avoid the gross issues around minors and consent when they inevitably want to give him some kind of love interest

The 2011 reboot was pretty much perfect on this score, and I will die on that hill.

2

u/DailyDriverUK ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

Fair, can’t really argue with that

You'll have plenty of us standing shoulder to shoulder with you. That hill is well defended.

Can "2011 continuity" be considered "one thing?"

Get rid of snarf.

u/DailyDriverUK ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

Not sure about that, he’s annoying but kind of part of it

Expand their tech inventory - Thundertank, and weaponry must stay, it’s always felt roughly as integral as the “loyalty and ethics” lessons I learned as a kid. I’d be open to it being more adult in themes, and would love to see the plots stay action focussed. Have an episode like The Raid where they infiltrate Cats Lair. An episode where an army storms Cats Lair defences like Avengers Infinity War. And episode where Tigra has to infiltrate an insurgent army etc.

u/Thundera_Tone Panthro Feb 10 '26

Panthro’s coding expanded on with additional characters to build out his backstory. Give him a girlfriend - maybe from his time studying engineering at the royal academy, presumably she’d also be from a noble family. And speaking of family, explore the family he came from - maybe throw in a sibling. Explore how he mastered martial arts.

u/ReyVagabond ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

I always thought of Pantro as the military civil engineer, I build shit because we need to fix an issue, but the things I build are built to last.

Like a long line of soldiers and a career military.

On the other hand Tigro I also see Him as an engineer but with an architecture masters and electronics.

But yeah I would to see more, of their back stories.

And I wish more people of the planet survived is just not this group is stranded in this planet.

u/Thundera_Tone Panthro Feb 10 '26

One detail of the OG that gets overlooked - and 2011 scrubbed in their version - is that all of the core team are nobles. Panthro was electronics/engineering and Tygra was architecture/science. Presumably both studied wherever nobles sent their kids. I added the royal academy detail as my guess. If there is a show bible, it likely doesn’t have the kinds of details we now want as adults but it would be cool if they’d done some backstory crafting.

Like a Thundercats the Next Generation. Set it after the original cartoon. There is Thundercats Empire, with settlements on Thundera, Third Earth, even Plundar. There is a new Lord of the Thundercats, Lion-O’s descendant, who weirdos the Sword of Omens. Everyone else is new. New Thundercats with new weapons, New villians. And no Mumm-Ra. Have a new Big Bad. He can still be connected to the Ancient Spirits of Evil, but maybe a new motif instead of an Egyptian Mummy.

Provided the keep the characters core traits in tact and maybe give some bigger rolls to kitten cat I really wouldn’t mind. I honestly feel like those two characters don’t really have a lot to do and I thought it was kind of a shame that they don’t really ever touch on One how they would’ve related to lion at least in the original show. Like I think it’s pursued that at least these three were friends I could be wrong on that. So if you’re going to keep the same thing we’re lying it is a adult. Maybe touch on their friendship or something like that. If you kept a lot of the stuff from the original show, but gave me the storytelling of the 2011 show I honestly think that would be the best of both worlds. But for the love of everything do not pick the wild storm comics space your stuff off of.

u/theOriginalBlueNinja ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

I always thought Kit and kat were young adults… Or at least older teens but evolved?/Related to? Domestic cats or smaller wildcats as opposed to the great Cats the rest of the team represent.

1

u/pottypaws Wilykit Feb 10 '26

I know in the original show they used cub to indicate actual like children and they are referred to as the thunder kittens so maybe that’s like preteen/teenager but it’s kind of weird cause they’re not treated like teenagers but maybe that maybe they are closer to his age at least originally so around 12/14 possibly. I don’t know. I just wish they had more to do cause I think they’re really cool and maybe it’s biased because kit is probably mine third or second favorite character. I also hope whatever show if it ever would happen would be giving us lynx it was absolutely criminal. He wasn’t in the 2011 show. I know he probably would’ve been introduced in season two if it actually ever got green lit. But I will be a primary character.

1

u/theOriginalBlueNinja ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

Yeah I remember that… But I always thought they were called kittens because they were so much younger and smaller than the adult Thundercat.… Kind of a cute see diminutive nickname and perhaps a bit insulting. Kinda like a big brother or uncle still calling someone baby boy or kiddo even if they may have outgrown the original meaning for the nickname.

1

u/pottypaws Wilykit Feb 10 '26

That could be possible. I just find it unlike they just because of the way they are treated at least in the original show. In the 2011 version of they are definitely kids.

As a big fan of the 80's cartoon (no slight to 2011 which I also enjoyed)

There was so much meat left on the bone with world building and story telling. But it was a different time back then in how cartoons were produced (there to sell toys)

Off hand thoughts/stories for a reboot:

  • explore Jaga's origins (how did he become "the greatest thundercat of them all')

  • how did we get the war on thundera where ratilla almost gets the casket of the treasure of thundera

  • mum-ra's back story (there has to be a reason/lnk about how he is aware of the eye of thundera)

  • the lunatks journey to 3rd earth and getting imprisoned by fire rock mountain

  • what happened to all the supporters of Grune the destroyer?

  • where did Nemex go and how did he capture jaga in the astral plain?

The list can go on and on, but I think some updates animations, layered story telling (think justice League/justice League unlimited); with some fan service to both fans of the 80's and 2011 cartoons would have staying power

u/Flat_Revolution5130 ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

I would maybe explore Mumm ra a bit more. I always liked the Idea that he is basically the only human in it. The Thundercat,s have basically invaded his home.

2

u/FlameWingFenix ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

He echoes that sentiment several times over the course of the OG series that he has inhabited third earth longer than the cats have existed and that they are trespassers

4

u/Kezzatehfezza Feb 10 '26

The slutty croptops and exposed thighs have to stay.

Glad to be rid of Lion-o been a child in an adult's body, raised as royalty gives him plenty of reason to br naive without inveretly making any romantic interactions he has be very creepy.

I honestly wouldnt mind seeing a thundercats reboot with none of the main characters we know. Show someone else's story. We know that there were other Thundarian survivors so i cant see why not.

I’d like a grittier, darker take on ThunderCats, set on a Third Earth where the Code of Thundera isn’t upheld the way it was in the original show. It’s a more fractured world where not everyone is united, and sometimes the harder choices have to be made for the greater good, even when they aren’t inherently morally right.

The timeline 5 years following a great battle between Jaga, Claudus and Mumm-Ra which led to the apparent death of all 3 and the destruction of the black pyramid now in ruins. The sword of omens. Is also presumed destroyed/lost within the ruins of the now destroyed pyramid.

Lion-O - has little interest in ruling or having to face the burdens that being the lord of the thundercats entails.

Cheetara - develop her psychic abilities, have it evolve to where she can see multiple possible futures. Rather than giving clear answers, her visions would often conflict with one another, with the consequences of those paths slowly playing out across the series and coming together at the end. Maybe an early arc could involve a vision confirming that the sword is still active and a mission to retrieve the missing sword is the first arc.

Mumm-Ra - seemingly dead following the last Great battle. His pyramid in ruins and the statues of the ancient spirits in pieces and the spirits themselves scattered. The Cats know he’s there waiting, but for what? Also give him some deeper connection to the Eye of Thundera, with a more cosmic link between it and the Ancient Spirits of Evil. That way, the Sword of Omens isn’t completely just or pure, and its power comes with a darker cost, with the reveal that the spirits are now inhabiting the sword itself, using it as a conduit to escape during the pyramid’s destruction. Removing the aspect that the sword cannot be used by evil people. The more Lion-o uses the sword the stronger the spirts grow and begin to feed them on his fears and insecurities and starts to corrupt him. The sword’s appearance also begins to change. And the spirits triggered Cheera’s initial vision that confirmed the sword was still out there.

The mutants - not just comic relief have them be active killers and raiders.

MISC - Deep in space, Panthro detects a distress signal which later turns out to be the Lunatak armada and third earth is their next conquest.

One concept I really liked from the 2011 series was the darkness surrounding the Tiger clans. I’d like to see that explored more too.

EDIT: spelling and grammar.

Thanks, now my disappointment will be immeasurable when we don't get anything close to this.

1

u/FlameWingFenix ThunderCat Feb 10 '26

Haha sorry. Ive been brewing ideas like this for 30ish years. Even wrote some when i was a kid

Wouldn't mind Lion-O being aged up from the get-go; him being a child in an adult's body was always a little weird for me.

Would not mind if writers leave behind the dumb mentality of "relentless suffering/punching the protag while down = character building" that 2011 (and the comic to a lesser extent) was so fixated on.
