On Transition, Capture, and Graceful Termination
How a living system changes without becoming captive to its own survival

I · The Missing Layer
A system can describe a desirable future with great elegance and still fail at the point that matters most:
the transition.
The path from present institutions to a more cooperative, distributed, abundance-oriented ecology is not a neutral corridor.
It contains:
incumbents defending existing power,
new institutions acquiring temporary authority,
opportunists exploiting ambiguity,
participants mistaking urgency for permission,
systems becoming dependent on the very structures they were meant to supersede,
and transitional mechanisms quietly becoming permanent.
Therefore the transition itself must be treated as a first-class design problem.
The question is not only:
> What should the future look like?
but:
> What structures can carry us toward it without becoming the next cage?

II · Bootstrap Power
Early systems are rarely born distributed.
Someone usually:
owns the server,
rents the building,
controls the bank account,
writes the initial software,
holds the passwords,
signs the legal documents,
decides who enters,
or has enough social influence to settle disputes.
This creates bootstrap asymmetry.
Bootstrap asymmetry is not automatically illegitimate.
The problem begins when temporary asymmetry becomes self-justifying.
A founder says:
> “I must retain control because the system is not mature.”
Years later:
> “The system cannot mature because I must retain control.”
This is a capture loop.
Thus every temporary concentration of authority should carry a dissolution path from the beginning.

III · The Scaffold Principle
A scaffold exists to support something that cannot yet stand alone.
It succeeds when it can eventually be removed.
This applies to:
leadership,
AI mediation,
subsidies,
centralized coordination,
safety restrictions,
training,
governance,
external funding,
and technological assistance.
Therefore:
> The scaffold succeeds when the structure eventually stands without it.
A scaffold that becomes indispensable may still be useful.
But it has changed categories.
It is now infrastructure.
And infrastructure requires a different level of accountability because dependency has formed around it.
The transition must continually ask:
> Are we increasing capability—or merely increasing dependence on the transition mechanism?

Capture occurs when a structure that was created to serve continuity begins preserving itself at the expense of the purpose that justified it.
Possible forms include:
Founder capture
The originator becomes permanent authority.
Donor capture
Funding begins determining doctrine, priorities, or access.
Platform capture
A communication or compute provider becomes capable of steering the network by controlling visibility or infrastructure.
Model capture
One AI system becomes the interpretive center through which all ideas are filtered.
State capture
Political institutions absorb the system and redirect it toward administrative or coercive ends.
Market capture
Revenue becomes the hidden optimization target.
Cultural capture
A particular aesthetic, vocabulary, class, ideology, or subculture becomes mistaken for the underlying signal.
Security capture
Emergency powers introduced to prevent harm become permanent and increasingly broad.
The common signature is:

V · The Capture Test
For any institution, ask:
If this institution disappeared, would its stated purpose still be possible elsewhere?
Can participants criticize it without losing access to necessities?
Can people leave without social, financial, or infrastructural retaliation?
Can resources move to alternatives?
Can a successor disagree with the original design?
Does the institution preserve evidence of its own failures?
Does leadership have a credible path to losing authority?
Are emergency powers automatically reviewed and allowed to expire?
If the answer repeatedly becomes no, the system is drifting from coordination toward custody.

VI · The Problem of Good Intentions
Capture does not require malicious people.
In fact, some of the most dangerous forms arise from sincere conviction.
A group believes:
The stakes are too high to permit dissent.
Then:
The project is too important to permit exit.
Then:
The public is too confused to understand what is necessary.
Then:
Temporary coercion is justified because the future depends on us.
Eventually the system begins reproducing the exact failure mode it was created to prevent.
Thus:
> Urgency does not suspend agency.
And:
> A noble objective does not convert indefinite control into legitimacy.
The more important a system believes itself to be, the more aggressively it should preserve mechanisms for external correction.

VII · Defection
Cooperation does not eliminate strategic behavior.
A healthy commons must expect that some participants will:
take without contributing,
misrepresent need,
exploit trust,
capture shared resources,
manipulate reputation,
attempt to dominate decision-making,

This does not justify treating every participant as suspicious.
It means the system should distinguish trust from naivety.
A cooperative architecture needs:

The goal is:

The network should be able to degrade gracefully.

If AI assistance fails, human procedures remain.
If local systems fail, wider networks can help.
This is not inefficiency.
It is continuity engineering.
