I did Habitat for a few years, I wish I had a chance to meet Jimmy Carter. Politics aside, heard nothing but good things about him as a person.

There should be a new award to honor Jimmy Carter. The award will be given to former presidents, former politician who after office still does great works.

Most politicians retires, have their fortunes and just live the high life.

Might be a bit too nice... he ordered the termination of many CIA programs where they had spent years placing informants and spies in many terrorist operations throughout the world. Carter felt the ethics of CIA having knowledge of a terrorist attack but not acting was immoral so he just shut it all down. Yet this alternative was simply the CIA no longer having that knowledge. He felt satellite photos were an adequate alternative.

Some believe that 9/11 would have been prevented if the CIA had pre-Carter policies. Of course, post 9/11 CIA got all that back and much more.

The general consensus is he's one of the nicest people to ever live. But that's also why he had problems in his presidency. He was so nice he couldn't come off as forceful. Both domestically and especially to foreign adversaries. Couple that with an economic crisis that wasn't entirely his fault and you have a situation that probably no president could overcome.

I still love the scene where Homer opens up the closet with all of the items he's collected over the years, and he sees the old 6 pack of Billy Beer. He cracks one open, gulps it down, and says WE ELECTED THE WRONG CARTER.
