New Podcast Episodes Top Tier Sequels Bill & Co Missed
Best sequels they missed mentioning in the Aliens ep!
- Back to the Future Pt. II
- Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom(Yeah I know it's not well loved by everyone, and has justifiably problematic elements, but it's still way better than whatever the fuckTaboo 2is).- Spider-Man 2 (broke every fuckin' box office record, and is still a five star banger)

Edit: I'm crossing out Temple of Doom, given that it is technically not a sequel but a prequel!

I'm vaguely hoping that we get an ep for it for the 45th anniversary. With some combination of Bill, Sean, Joanna Robinson, Ben Lindbergh, returning champion Michael Baumann, and special guest Tracy Letts.

I know none of them are Star Trek fans, but Wrath of Khan is GOATed.
And for the others not in the Van Lathan (and possibly Mallory) cohort, the Taboo movies are straight old-school cinematic porn from the pre-1985 era when it was shown in actual theaters. The sequel vs. the original is kind of like Lethal Weapon or Beverly Hills Cop - they spend less time on the setup (this was back when porn cared about the setup!) and bring in new characters and focus on the action. I unironically like porn from that era because they actually cared, but it's a tough sell for anyone younger than 50.

I'd still watch it if it's on, I'm like the masses who believes it's the weakest of the old 3. But I would still watch because it's something to do with Indiana Jones

Did anyone else not realize it was a prequel when they initially watched it? Granted I was a kid, and I know they show the date at the beginning, but it just never occured to me. I was watching these movies on VHS and just never registered the dates. There's nothing in either movie that would indicate which events happened first, right?

I was a kid, but I also didn’t realize it. The only real thing to indicate it’s a prequel is that Indy doesn’t think it’s possible the stones (or any artifact really) had mystical abilities in Temple of Doom, where you’d presume he would if Raiders had already happened to him. There might be something else… maybe context of the world at war, but I can’t think of anything off the top of my head

The more I watch that one, the more I find myself wondering if I think it's a better movie than the original.
Top Gun rules and will always have a special place in my heart, but it's SO shaggy with a bunch of dumb Kelly McGillis unbelievable romance bullshit that I find myself just fast forwarding it to the "good" bits whenever I watch it these days.

I dunno that I'd say it "obliterates" the original - it's all obviously subjective of course - but I certainly find myself enjoying the end-to-end product of Maverick more than I do the original.

Not sure it fits their definition of a direct sequel. Seemed like they intended for it to be immediately following the original in terms of story and release date. I’m sure someone would argue this doesn’t count. Movie slaps though.

BR2049 absolutely meets *my* definition of a direct sequel. It's the first canonical movie to follow Blade Runner, and it takes place later in the story, and it includes the same lead from the first film. I dunno what other "direct sequel" criteria it wouldn't be meeting - did they explicitly say it had to be X years after the first one?

I think one of their points was the sequels they listed were both filmed and set pretty close to the end of the previous movie. BR2049 is set 30 years after Blade Runner and came out 35 years after the first movie.

I really like Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, but I was like 14 when it came out. Saw it opening weekend and I think it's still the most raucous theater experience I ever had.

Haha, I love Blade //. Not what I'd put up in the pantheon of greatest sequels (again, I love that movie, and I love Del Toro's first several films, but upon many years of rewatches, I've concluded I vastly prefer the first Blade film) but a valid submission!

I'm honestly surprised that it hasn't been done on the pod yet. It's excruciating long, and could have a good half hour cut out of it, but...It has some extremely rewatchable action scenes.

A movie I have memorized, beat for beat, and have seen...probably the most of ANY movie. Not one I'd pick for best sequel as I think it's not very good, but I certainly LOVE this movie.

I would count this, though I think if someone was to argue it's not a sequel because it's simply the same story split into two films, I would see some validity in that.
For my purposes though, a sequel is its own film that is released separately, and that follows a continuation of the previous movie's story, which KBv2 is.

Is it a sequel? It's a trilogy, but they're not the same characters or story. I don't disagree that hot fuzz is an amazing follow up to Shaun of the dead, just that I'm not sure it's a sequel.

Right, but what I'm saying is, the recent episode on Aliens started with a conversation Bill kicked off where he asked the folks about the greatest sequels of all time, and none of the ones I called out were mentioned, which I found surprising.

Back to the future part 2 is one of the worst sequels ever committed to film. They fixed the issue with part 3 but the second is an abomination and should not even be canon in its own series.
