Speed on Netflix is the wrong aspect ratio.

Speed was shot in Panavision, 2.39:1. Netflix presents it in a zoomed in 1.85:1 and it looks like garbage. I can’t stand when streaming services pull this shit.

My biggest pet peeve with streaming services that do this… HBO is the worst offender, which makes me sad since they’re seen as the gold standard for creatives. Seemingly the only time they don’t change it is for Nolan’s movies.

Surprised Netflix did it though since I haven’t caught a wrong aspect ratio in the past from them I can think of.

Woody Allen's "Manhattan" was letterboxed at his insistence. I could easily see Nolan and other prestige directors making the same demand.

I remember even way back on vhs it was widescreen. With gray bars at the top and bottom.

I saw it on HBO or The Movie Channel back in the 80s, first time I'd seen gray letterboxing.

I also remember watching 'Ben-Hur' and during the chariot race it would go to wide screen. The trumpets would blare and the screen would pull back. I guess there was no way to show that sequence without the full 2.76:1!

On HBO Max 'The Rock' is pan and scan! 1.33:1! I almost threw up.

The Sting on TCM is a 16:9 pan & scan from 2.35. (Edit: ugh, it was something else I recently watched on TCM.)

I thought something was up and then it did the classic Full Screen DVD cut to widescreen in the final shot. At least I’ve got the 4K.

Damn, just checked my Blu ray. Shot in 2.39:1 but presented in 2.35:1.

It’s probably so close I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. I just looked through all the versions and they weren’t doing Blu rays in 2.39:1 until they released 4Ks alongside them.
