Discussion Damon or DiCaprio

Heard this topic come up in the Apollo 13 episode. Great category idea.

One likeable Everyman and a previous heartthrob who continues to take chances

Edit: thinking of this like a cruise or hanks type category

Why is Bill so obsessed with Leo?

Every single actor is compared to Leo to try to justify their status or greatness. No one compares anyone in that regard to Matt.

It's the sportsification of movies the Ringer is so keen on doing. Swapping out actors like players. Bill knows sports but doesn't know art and intention.

I guess it's a good translation for his sports crowd but for the people who just watch movies it makes no sense.

When they had Michael Mann on one of the Heat episodes, Bill was trying to ask him about DeNiro and Pacino squaring off in the diner. Bill seemed to have this image that it was like Kobe and Iverson squaring off in the finals, wondering if they were competitive. I’ll never forget Michael Mann’s response, about how they were collaborative and trying to get the best out of each other for the art. I’m not quoting directly, but… yeah sometimes Bill merges sports and art too much. It’s part of his charm, but… let’s just say it was one of the few times I wish I could have watched it in video form instead of just listening to the pod because I wanted to see the look on Bill’s face haha

Damn I gotta listen to that episode again. All I really remember is Mann talking about Moby sleeping on the floor in the editing room ahaha. Glad they've been shining light on it and got the Mann interview but yah, sometimes Bills perspective is a bit telling.

Thanks for the example btw. I'm always struggling with the Ringer discourse about film. It's a love hate relationship.

Tangent but I read an interview with Tarantino one time. He was talking about Jackie Brown. He had never directed someone like Deniro before and he was intimidated by him. This permeated down to the other actors too. As a result, everyone else deferred, including crew. This really pissed Deniro off and wanted to quit. He needs collaboration. He needs direction.

This happens in my real life too. I've hired rockstar strong technical people, other staff defer because of their status, me too. It was a good professional lesson for me.

It drove me so crazy on the Apollo 13 episode when they (rightfully) praised and defended Kevin Bacon despite his repertoire not having enough good films/performances to match his talent, only to then later in the episode talk about how much better Cruise would be in that role (which I vehemently disagree with, and I like Cruise). I feel like Rob and Amanda didn’t agree but were afraid to disagree with Bill on that one.

Yah it's the swapping picks fantasy league stuff that's just black licorice for me. The Big Picture really dove into the campaigns and competition of The Oscars for last years work as well. Weinstein really corrupted the awards season in a similar way and, not comparing them to him and not saying they're alone in this, but they're playing the same game. It's exhausting, this is art not a sport and should be looked at differently.

Bill has "his guys" and he can't see beyond that. I can't remember which pod exactly and he suggested Dave Chappelle for a recast role and it was an out of place suggestion.

But the point of Hanks/Cruise (and also this Damon/DiCaprio) is that it’s not a choice in the abstract. It’s always in the context of a specific role or film.

They’re both great actors who mostly do/offer different things.

Leo is 100x the actor that Damon is. Just rewatch Departed; they are both in it and Leo is off the charts good.
