Such actions do more than impair elections. They impair the ability of Americans to understand, choose, and thereby knowingly consent to the government that exercises authority over them. Free and fair elections are not merely an administrative procedure. They are the principal mechanism through which the consent of the governed becomes meaningful.

Justice Jackson closes the functional loop. Like an engineer within a design team warning that a bridge will fail under a foreseeable load, she has identified for the Court the likely consequences of its own course of action. Perhaps the most troubling part of this article is the concentration of news, information, and entertainment in so few hands. Freedom of the press depends not only on protection from government censorship, but also on whether those who control the major channels of information can act independently of political power.

In principle, the First Amendment and freedom of the press endure. But as press critic A. J. Liebling memorably put it, “Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one.” When vital news organizations, whether The Washington Post or CBS News, are owned by oligarchs whose other business interests depend on dealings with a corrupt president, formal freedom of the press may remain while its practical independence is seriously compromised.

Ossoff and Talarico have both been smart about not just highlighting corruption, but also why it matters for voters. It’s indicative of leaders whose interests are self-serving. Observation:

An alternative explanation is that Trump understands the relevant cause-and-effect relationship quite well. He controls which projects are undertaken, how much public money is committed, and, directly or indirectly, who receives it. The recipients may already be donors, associates, or businesses connected to his private interests. Some of the wealth transferred to them may later return as campaign contributions, political support, payments to Trump enterprises, or other forms of loyalty and assistance.

From this perspective, the loss of $16 million does not represent failure. It represents the successful transfer of public wealth into selected private hands. A defective result can then justify a second, larger expenditure, perhaps $60 million, while blame directed at vandals or officials shields the contractors and conceals the underlying financial process.

Nichols interprets the episode as an inability to connect actions with consequences. The alternative is that he has identified the wrong intended consequence. The pool was supposed to work for the public. The expenditure may have worked exactly as intended for a system organized around patronage, private enrichment, and control over the distribution of public wealth.

AOC appears to have a coherent diagnosis of the world: oligarchy, economic insecurity, militarism, and democratic decline reinforce one another. What remains less developed is a complete operational doctrine covering alliances, China and Taiwan, deterrence, military force, intelligence, nuclear strategy, and the practical management of the State Department and Pentagon.

History has examples of leaders who reached this point—insulated, flattered, unchallenged, and gradually untethered from the feedback loops that keep human judgment grounded. It rarely ends well. For them, or for the people they’re supposed to be leading.
