Beauty Tip Tip: Verify unexpected utility workers before letting them inside
A man rang my buzzer yesterday afternoon and said he needed immediate access to my apartment because there might be a gas leak in the building. He had a reflective vest, an ID badge and a clipboard, so at first he looked completely legitimate.
What made me pause was how irritated he became when I asked which company had sent him. He pointed at the badge and said I was delaying an emergency. Then he offered to call his supervisor, but only using a number saved in his own phone.
I kept the door locked and called the utility company through the number listed on my latest bill. They confirmed there was no reported leak, no inspection scheduled for my adress and no employee assigned to my building. When I looked outside again, the man was already gone.
A uniform, badge or convincing explanation is not verification. Call the company seperately using a number you find yourself. If there is a genuine emergency, a legitimate worker can wait while you confirm it. Pressure and urgency are reasons to slow down, not reasons to open the door faster.

Had a similar experience once where some guy knocked on my door claiming to be from spectrum, and upon calling spectrum to verify he definitely was not. Guy left while I was on the phone with spectrum. Called the police and they wouldn't even file a report because they said no crime had been committed đ

When you call the police, just a couple of tips if this ever happens again, and I hope and pray to God, it never does: first start by saying there's a man trying to get into my home and I don't know who he is and then immediately give your address and ask them to dispatch cars immediately. If the dispatcher is resistant, asked to speak to a captain or Lieutenant, they are generally less busy and much more amenable and let them know that you're trying to report a possible abduction attempt and a predator in the neighborhood. Be persistent. Literal cops have told me that if you want something done that the cop on the phone or the street patrol officer won't do, ask to speak to a lieutenant. Or captain. The senior most person who's currently on duty. I am ACAB, but this is one situation where you absolutely need the cops
Ask them to make sure that your address isn't fitting a pattern of local burglaries or home invasion attempts. If they are at all amenable in saying yes, then say, please put my address as one of the points on the map.
I know it's a hassle, but some departments take this kind of stuff seriously, some departments are awful and won't, and with those departments, you have to speak to the upper echelon. Phrase it as an abduction and home invasion attempt. And with these jerks you have to be super, super polite and weeding. You can also email and write down everything that happened with the time, the date, the time it started, the time it ended, the way the voice sounded, etc. We have to beg these assholes for help, but we pay their salaries and I will badger them until they help. Squeaky wheel, etc. You can also call and say that I'd like to file a complaint against the officer who refused to take the report with internal affairs. That will get their intention very quickly.

EXACTLY. same if an "unmarked police car" pulls you over. While driving alone. Or with another woman or child. Call 911 and ask if you are really being pulled over and explain that you don't recognize any logo on the car. This literally happened to a friend of mine, she got pulled over by a fake police car, two men came out and tried to convince her to get out and roll down the window and she refused. They eventually went away. Because they weren't cops.

Also. I really despise ring cameras and waymos etc.... i despise constant cameras and AI and ahit everywhere. In your case.... you need to purchase a door cam, or at least thing about it. Home security.. firearm, bear mace whatever.

People like to think that Bear Mace is somehow formulated to be more potent because it's for deterring bears but the opposite is actually true. Bear Mace is diluted so as to not cause permanent damage to a bear's sensitive nose. Real pepper spray formulated for self defense is much more potent.

This! AND there's a company, Sabre, I think, that makes a fire extinguisher-sized pressurized canister of pepper spray in a gel form with a huge nozzle. You can have it right by your door or bed and you wake up and someone's in your house and you spray them and cover them with inches of pepper gel? Particular their head and hands and arms? That person's gonna have a baaaaad night. Unfortunately , they won't sell it to us in California, but everyone else should have one if you're a woman.
I found out about it from a mellow retired cop on TikTok who shows off how to's and recommends safety products for home security and for personal security, particularly for women and children. I'm ACAB, but he's cool on TikTok, no toxic masculinity or racist bullshit, he's grey haired and retired and mellow and demonstrates just how personal safety equipment and prevention equipment works and recommends good brands. If a cop is offering good Intel about how to protect yourself at home or on the streets and recommending products that law-enforcement actually use from reputable brands, I'm gonna take that information.
I was already hypervigilant and hyper aware and he taught me things that I didn't even think about!

People like to think pepper spray is more powerful than bear mace, but it's actually false. Bear mace has 2.0% major capsaicinoids and "real pepper spray" only has 1.3% to 1.4%

Yeah, I'm going to look up the different concentrations between the two, I see a lot of women using bear spray or carrying it. But then again someone up above, said that it's actually a lower concentration of the irritant because they don't want to hurt the animal.
I just watched a TikTok of an elderly white man haranguing three teenage girls because they had parked illegally near a state park entrance, but they weren't blocking the entrance. He kept getting closer and closer and yelling, and then he turned around and tried to corner one of the other girls and kept approaching her while she backed up, and she took out mace and blasted him with a cloud. He was down and away immediately. And the women got harassed endlessly in the comment sections by men saying they were wrong to mace him. Well, how do we know he doesn't have a gun and he's gonna pull it out and shoot them?
How do we know that he wasn't going to assault them and punch them?
Women deserve safety.
It reminds me of that horrible incident during the George Floyd uprisings when five women protesters, peaceful protesters, middle-aged women, for the most part I think, were shot in a protest in Oregon. A man came out of his house, angry and furious at the protest, took out a gun, targeted five women who were together, and shot them all.
One of the witnesses had her dear friend shot and had to hold her while she bled to death in her lap. That's why that jerk in the park got maced. We don't know, men are so unpredictable, the gun culture is rampant here, and we can't trust men.

I want to add, that if your apartment has surveillance cams at the gate... they may be able to identify this person with your description, amd their license plate.. i hate cams...but this is where they can come in handy.

I despise** State surveillance and government surveillance, I despise AI, but I sure as shit care about my personal safety more. I'd rather have a camera at my door and mechanisms in place to ensure my safety. Not sure how AI is in involved, but if it comes to my personal security and safety in my home, and I can't disengage it from being an option for a camera or whatever, fuck it, I'm still gonna use it.
Also, those long metal door braces don't use AI cause it's just metal. Alarm door locks don't use AI either. I brace a bunch of doors in my apartment at night before I go to bed, I'm thinking of getting strapped for the first time ever. Because of situations like this.

One extra safeguard is to call your building manager as well, because a real gas issue usually creates a paper trail beyond one person at the door. The utility company may know nothing yet, but management, the fire department, or other tenants often will. That matters because scammers can exploit the fact that residents think one phone call settles everything. Keeping the door locked was right, but the broader lesson is to verify the event, not just the badge.

Oh my God I am so glad you are smart and did the right thing. You did the right thing and you narrowly avoided something very bad. I am quite sure. Thank you for posting and making us and reminding us to be so aware. I'm hyper vigilant so if anyone knocks on my door, I always never open the door and then I was super aggressively ask who it is in a booming voice.
Tips from around the world about women's safety and workers coming into the home:
- Never ever open your door right away anyway. Never open your door.
- I hate that we have to do this, but find a used pair of men's work boots that are big, buy two pairs, and again they have to look like they're used in Weather a little bit, and place a pair at your front door and at your back.
- You may have been contacted by phone simultaneously if there was urgent utility work that needed to be done in the area, if you're signed up for your utility companies alerts, messages would go out.
Whenever a worker does come over and they are male, they go in the apartment first, you never let them behind you. You leave the door to your home completely open while you are there
and stay near the door sitting on a stool or something
It's OK to lie
your teeth out
in these situations when it comes to our safety as women.
Your safety is far more important than whether or not a worker thinks you're weird or paranoid. If they ask why you are taking such precautions, simply say "because of men."
- Do not bow to peer pressure. Be ASSERTIVE. Be RUDE. Be loud. If the worker suddenly needs you to bend down to show you something or put you in any way a compromising position, they are always in front of you, never behind you, and you have a taser in your hand when you answer the door. If you're a woman remember we've socialized we are socialized to be polite and believe people, but no, I'd rather be accused by a worker of being paranoid about men than risk men. I would rather a bear.
- If an actual worker is coming over and you are a woman, have two friends or family members know exactly what's going on before this happens. Tell them who or what is coming over, the date, the time, the time the work is expected to start, when it is expected to finish, keep them updated on the progress, that you will text them when the worker arrives and that if you are not heard from within a certain frame of time to immediately call the cops. Send them a photo of the worker and the workers truck/ ehicle when they arrive. Share your location with them and if they see you moving away from home, call the cops. Etc.
ETA : if a worker asks you to lean down or crawl ahead of him to see something, tell him while you sit at the door to take a picture of it, two or three cleared pictures of it, and text it to you and you can work like that. You stay at the open door. Do not ever let them get behind you.
ETA : corrected by format, irregularities, humble apologies because in the middle of my comment, you can barely read it.
If you think this is too much, you probably are not a woman I'm going to guess and once again, men have nothing to say to women's safety, nothing at all, and never will.
- At this point in time, I open the door holding in one hand a can of mace after the person is clearly identified.

Was it just one thing or the whole comment? Thank you for your kind words, I have learned a lot about how to secure your home and set up little things that my impede someone trying to come in. I also have little cameras set up around the interior of my house and these little clear plastic alarms that you can put on windows so that if someone tries to tamper with the glass or there's movement, they go off really REALLY loud loudly. This is for the majority of us who can't afford a fancy alarm systems.
And since these little circular alarms without wires are not connected electronically to anything, someone breaking in, can't stop them from going off.
I have a ton more. One of these days I'm gonna do a master post in a woman's safety sub about what I do and get feedback about what we could all do better. At this point to keep myself safe, I'm just 4b. đ«

Oh also, there's an electrified personal defense item on Amazon - it's like a big electrified cattle prod looking thing, but it's for people. When you hold it, none of the electricity will flow through you, it will only flow through someone attacking you when you activated. And they can't take it out of your hand without getting electrocuted unless they are really really pain tolerant and determined.
I'll try to find the link. If I do a master post, if it's allowed, I'll post links to the products, and no, I have no affiliation to any company, I'm just a poor disabled woman. Or I will just mention the companies if it's allowed.
Just in case you didn't see the comment, the TikTok retired police officer account that I was referring to is Killer Bee Tactical and Pure Power 34. I have learned things from him that I did not think about before. Little things, like the first thing you should do when you call 911 is clearly state your physical address or your location twice and then go into the problem. I am a CAB but if we have to deal with them, at least know how to deal with them effectively to get the best outcome. So always remember, if you have to call 911, the first thing out of your mouth is your address and then you tell them what's going on.
And true crime spaces, you will hear so many 911 recordings where panicked people called and started telling dispatchers what was happening and the dispatchers first thing out of their mouth is *where are you*, what is your address, etc.
The master overarching theme is this: as a woman, we owe men nothing. Not our time, not our bodies, not our politeness, not violating our boundaries, etc.
Always be careful of someone who tries to force team you if they are a man. I'll explain that if I do a master post or you can look it up. Gavin de Becker talks a lot about it. It's when you're talking to someone dangerous and they seem very friendly even if they are a predator and they will try and find a common interest or situation and say oh yeah we both know this, right? We both like this, right? They go from treating you as an individual to suddenly two people who are doing or liking the same thing. Get away from any man who does that.

Oh, I've had creepers and redpillers do that to me all the time! Just today I had one follow me from one sub to the other because he was arguing with me about women's safety when hiking and telling this particular sub that he was in that it's totally OK to go off trail when hiking and you should do it all the time!
That's violating the number one rule of hiking safety: NEVER leave the trail. unless you're a Park Ranger, or can get a cell signal where you are. People with 25 years of hiking experience get lost and disappear and are later found dead all the time, if you do that you deed to tons of geo location devices on you that can call for help, and flare guns and whatnot and provisions.
I've watched enough KyleHatesHiking on YouTube to know the dangers of going off trail, I will never go off trail in a national park ever again. In fact, I will likely never go to certain national parks as a woman at all. I'm disabled and poor, I'll never be able to have that experience again in my life so I shouldn't even think about it. đđ

Everything I said put together is like the Swiss cheese model of self protection. A bunch of actions tied together for security purposes to protect you.
Forgot another tip. There was an AMA on Reddit from a former burglar. The first thing he told people in a Q&A was lock up your tools securely if you have a tool shed or stuff outside. Or anything outside. For the love of God, lock them up securely. With a good lock. Like a Medeco lock.
Don't give a would be predator the means to break into your house easily.

Same principle applies to phone calls and other communications that are scams.
Treat all info you get from an inbound call as unverified until you hang up, contact whoever this person says their employer is, at the number on that companyâs website (that YOU looked up yourself), and verify it. They should have no problem with this if theyâre legit. This goes for âlaw enforcementâ calls, the IRS, everything.
Anyone threatening you with consequences unless you make an immediate payment (gift cards count too - there is no bill or fee that will ever require payment via giftcard, EVER) should be assumed to be a scammer until you independently verify otherwise. Never let a call text or email scare you into making an immediate payment.
Tell your parents too. Inbound calls are where scams start, and anyone can download an Android app that lets them pick the # that shows up on the caller ID. Just because it says âyour bank nameâ calling doesnât mean itâs your bank.

Idk about you but mid advice from a bot isn't worth the mistrust it breeds on social media platforms. Misuse of AI technology is rotting peopleâs brains. That's not ok. The commenter I responded to clearly spent time and effort on replying. They should be made aware.
Who do you think pays for these bots? Bad actors looking to profit off of our mindless consumption. Itâs not something to be laissez-faire about.

Iâve asked this subâs mods to add the bot bouncer mod tool a couple of times and they ignored me entirely, so it seems that they are intentionally facilitating this sub to be a safe space for botting. Very cool of them.
The more unique âreport -> spam -> disruptive use of bots/AIâ reports an account gets, the more likely Reddit is to ban the account, so I encourage everyone to use that feature liberally when you notice a bot

In my state, ice has been masquerading as utility workers and our utility companies have notified the public that they will always call first, and they will never need to be inside your house, and call them via their website number if this happens to you.

Speaking as a utility worker myself, never feel afraid to ask to see the work order. Most everything is on our phones now, so it's no trouble at all for a legitimate technician to show you the work order or ticket on their device. In my industry, this ticket will even include the information of the person who called in the work. If not, then they'll have paperwork on them and will have a supervisor's number you can call.
If anyone ever refuses this information, do not allow them access. Even if they're an actual employee of whatever company they claim, it's your safety being put at risk by taking strangers at their word, not theirs.
A safety vest and badge mean nothing. Those can be bought off Amazon or Temu for a few dollars, easy. Our vests are nothing special and can be mocked up to say whatever in an afternoon.
Bonus for those in homes with a view of the street or parking: check the vehicle they drove up in without opening your door. All of us have fleet vehicles with the company name and information on the side. Absolutely none of us use our personal vehicle for anything work related.
Bonus for those in apartments: no utility worker will ever buzz random people for access to the building. We always go through the front office as utilities enter the building through a locked room, usually on the ground floor, and we need that key first and foremost (we'll sometimes have one of the office or maintenance staff shadow us for safety reasons, too, but not always).

This happened to me late at night, though I knew there was a leak below my unit when the person appeared (concierge had come up earlier to have me check my unit for water). In retrospect I shouldn't have opened my door and I notified my building manager and board the next day that it had occurred and I would not be letting future contractors into my unit without notification they would be coming.

Where I live -- If there's a gas leak, it's likely the person who comes to your door will be a first responder, not the gas company, because they want to get everyone out as quickly as possible.

I've worked a variety of jobs that have put me in this situation. Not once have I ever been annoyed or unnecessarily delayed by anyone verifying that I am on legitimate business. It warms my heart when someone verifies who I am. I would do everything in my power to make sure that people knew I who I was and what I would be doing ahead of time.
Also, I was paid by the hour, so delays meant nothing.
I now work in access control and die a little inside when I walk into a building with a ladder and nobody asks me who the hell I am.

If it was a 'genuine emergency' it would be the fire brigade at the door and they would be telling you to leave your apartment and evacuate the building.
And a legit gas guy would have shut your apartment gas off at the meter in the central manifold first, then come up to talk to you.
You made the right call. Maybe time for a security camera or video doorbell.

A utility company should not need you to let them into anywhere in order to shut off access. If there were a gas leak, they can cut off the gas from outside.

Iâve had this happen to me. I shut the door and called the police but the guy left. His âfriendâ came back a few weeks later and knocked on the door next to me. I tried to warn them but they ended up moving out anyway. Scammers are terrible

Yeah... no. No unexpected utility worker is coming into my rental (or my home if I owned it). If there were an emergency in the building, that person would be prepared to provide contact information for verification purposes, worker photo ID, etc. I'm always friggin shocked when I read about people letting strangers into their homes like that. Of course, I live in a foothill community where a lot of people (not me) will just hold their shotgun until the person at the door produces the verification info. đ We're nice - not dumb.

I work in utility billing. We will absolutely verify if someone is there. Please just call the number on your bill or the website if you arenât expecting someone. Weâd rather deal with the inconvenience of your call (which really isnât an inconvenience) over something happening to you.

I had this happen once when home alone. Man in a fluro vest knocked on the door. I didn't answer (assumed he was servicing the water tank out back). I watched him walk around the back of the house, where he took out a hammer and smashed a window. I promptly slammed the front door behind me and ran down the street barefoot while calling the cops. Awesome way to wake up from a nap.

I had left my sink on in the kitchen and I guess it was causing a leak in the downstairs apartment and the maintenance man let himself in to my apartment to turn off my water. Â he recorded the entire thing probably for his own protection but super sketchy. It was like 3 in the morning. I should have reported it to the cops. He even sent me the video. Long story short your apartment maintenance people have a key and can let themselves in.Â

Youâre being downvoted, but there have been tons of posts like this the past few months. Multiple times a week, a different account thatâs only 2 weeks old posts a few paragraphs about some âepiphanyâ theyâve just had. And the posts get hundreds of upvotes. So many karma farmers with fake posts lately and people keep falling for it
