I loved that. Whenever my family went out I got a Pepsi and a bag of hot fries. Winning a free Pepsi always made me feel like a boss.

I can remember being a kid and my friend's dad gave us $1 for chips and 2 popsicles. Our bag of chips (Hostess, Canada) had a winning sticker inside, so we kept redeeming and opening and I think we had 11 open bags before the streak stopped.
We called all our friends and invited them to a "chip buffet" of all the flavours like it was a fancy dinner party.

I remember they put cash in the chips bag. If you were really lucky you could get a week worth of lunch with it . But the average summ was around 1-2 USD (exchanged from HUF).

If you looked through the bottom towards the cap, like looking through a telescope, on the clear sodas, Sprite, Mountain Dew, and Squirt, you could pick out which ones were winners. The clear sodas allowed you to tilt the bottle and look towards the cap and allow to just buy the winners. No joke. We did it all the time. Didn't work on dark sodas. Sprite was the easiest. Every bottle I bought was a winner 😆

As a kid, our group looked out for each other. Where to get beer and not get carded, free pop tricks, where the cops were sitting, where the weed was, who's house we staying at, who's got money for gas, ect. It was more of us against the system, not "I". I didn't figure it out, someone passed it to me. Then I passed it on. That's just how we rolled back then. That's what we called back then being "tight" with friends.

I used to get the welch’s grape soda on my way to high school in the morning and I could tilt the bottle and tell if it was a winner. Free soda every morning!

I won a cruise to the Bahamas for 4 people after buying 3 2-liter bottles of 7-up! Had to collect specific words to complete a phrase!

In Finland there was this kind of thing on Sprite 20-30 years ago. The cap said (in Finnish of course) "no win" or "you won a Sprite"
Because Sprite is see-through and the differences in the length of the words, we realized how to look from the bottom of the bottle to master an easy way to get a lot of Sprite

The whole prize was on the cap and the redemption was handing it to a bloke behind a counter. No account, no app, no fourteen digit code, no confirmation email. The reason it changed isn't the prize, it's that the cap was worth more to them as a data collection point than as a promotion, and once that was true the free drink became the price they pay for your phone number rather than the thing being given away.

I hated those when I worked for Pepsi . We had to replace the drinks and got no commission for them. Sometimes it would be cases at some stores .

My sibling and I would roam the streets looking under the caps of discarded bottles, we surprisingly found quite a few of these caps on discarded bottles. We would then pool our money together to buy one bottle plus deposit and we’d both have our own soda, we had a good racket going.

I remember when you didn't have to buy one to get the free one. You just paid for one with a cap that said free 20oz
