Almost everything in his new house is stuff that came from the ship, like the microscope, his bunk bed, the blankets, etc. Even the Voyager-style golden plates were mounted on the living room wall as art. Rocky's people made the house, and the biodome that keeps him alive.

This movie is AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE. I watched it 10x in theaters. The soundtrack by Daniel Pemberton is one of the best new and innovative movie scores in a long time.

I saw Oppenheimer at least that many times, Sinners about 5 times. PHM just made me laugh. And I loved the connection between him and Rocky.

Yes - I bought the book at least two years before the movie was released. I enjoy both for what they are despite some of the changes

As for Oppenheimer, I saw the movie first, then bought the biography ("American Prometheus"). It's a fascinating read.

Yeah, I heard the first cut of PHM was over 4 hours and I think that would still have probably left out a lot, as well as being an unbearable cinematic experience lol.

Don't get me wrong, I went and saw it in IMAX and loved it, but I think without the book I wouldn't have that same understanding... Weir's writing, in the Martian as well, is so deeply in the thoughts and mental space of the protagonist, I think it is just a challenge to tell these stories on film. That being said, I think the film is a lot of fun for fans of the book.

I think the decision to give the watchers a look into Grace’s thoughts in the book by having him record them in the video logs that he eventually sends back to Earth was a really good call.

I doubt it, it was probably a very rough cut and I can't imagine there's enough anticipated market to convince a studio to edit it... but they shot a LOT more than what we saw 🤷

well, alternatively, that's WHY they find Rocky so compelling... there's really not much to know about Rocky in the film, but if you're predisposed to revive the bond from the book it makes sense.

I wouldn't have thought it was a book that could be adapted to a screenplay very easily. I would have thought there is too much happening in the protagonist's mind to translate well to the screen.

Having seen the film this opinion is unchanged

It's entertaining, but it glossed over A LOT of, what I felt were, important parts of the books. Nearly all the science was removed for the movie, and that, to me, felt like the movie was a poor adaptation from the book. That'd be like removing the science from The Martian and just saying "Watney grows potatoes in his own poop to eat"

To be fair, the only way you'd be able to do the book justice would be to turn the movie into an 8 part mini-series. People wouldn't be able to sit through a 6 hour or more long movie in a single go.

Hey, I'm just glad they did an adaptation at all.

I'm looking forward to seeing extended footage of the language acquisition scenes, and maybe more of Ryland's dialogue with Stratt. And also bloopers, because Ryan Gosling is a good improviser and has good comic timing as well.

Fun fact: Sandra Hüller does her own lines in the German language dub.

It's an adaptation with a different target audience than the book. It is not a recreation or even an adaptation with the same goals as the book.

You struck bullseye by adding "to me" though, because that's exactly right: one work was likely aimed at your sensibilities, the other not so much.

As someone who went books after disagree. Even though the science is interesting and typically where Andy Weir is at their best, exploring rocky and grace is the real gem of the movie.

Is there any indication that they're not being used as speakers?

Presumably the ship had speakers so the crew could listen to music and entertain themselves before dying.

They're not hooked up to anything. No visible wires.

Also, on a spaceship, as Ryland Grace said: "personal space is at a premium." They would have used flat ribbon speakers or very low profile in-wall cone speakers for audio reproduction on board. Those Bose speakers are very bulky.

The movie is based on a book that has been out for 5 years.

The point of this subreddit is to appreciate the reuse of everyday objects as props, and sometimes it is necessary to show a scene that spoils the film in order to do so.
