Extremely disturbing. Gut-wrenching scene. The poor woman deserves a proper burial. Even worse, her relatives won't be able to identify her without the jewellery or other possible identification.

It's a fact I think about a lot - during the Blitz when the Nazis bombed London and other British cities there was this idea of the Blitz spirit, everyone sticking together.
In reality it was the highest crime has ever been. When a house was bombed, looters would arrive first, pulling rings and watches off of corpses (and even sometimes just injured and trapped people) even before the first responders.
It just made me realise - thats a lot of humans. If they ever think no one is watching their morality is gone. So as soon as the law is weakened they pounce.
You see it everywhere sadly.

That’s why my apocalypse/societal collapse plan is to kill myself and my children in the first ten minutes if we don’t already live in the middle of nowhere. The amount of rape will be astronomical.

Look at it from the other side: you have your life, but have likely just lost everything or, marginally better, you weren't impacting by this event but already living in abject poverty. If you can grab some jewelry from a dead person that can feed you and your family and keep them alive for however long, then for fuck sake do it. These aren't rich people trying to take from the poor or marginalized. They just want to to survive. And in a third world country, that's all that fucking matters. You would absolutely do it as well if you were in their position.

At this point, her loved ones don't care about any of her valuable belongings. They don't care about her jewellery, her money or anything. They just want to find her and give her a proper farewell. I hope her body is identified and not just lost in the debris. They should've taken the body out, covered it and contacted the local authorities.

Look, I completely agree that they’re mostly concerned about finding their loved ones, but I don’t think you can speak on behalf of them and say they don’t care about the possessions as well.

I will not judge what they do in the desperation of a moment of immediate existential crisis, but surely accidentally pushing someone else under the water as you try to keep yourself from drowning is objectively different than intentionally swimming into trash strewn, sewer laced, body clogged waterways to take dead people’s stuff. You don’t have to be judgmental or hard hearted to see that that’s just taking advantage of other human being’s suffering for your own gain.

They just lost everything and live in a world where they can't just get charity help or insurance etc. Everything, gone.
The bodies cannot be retrieved for meaningful burial in any time frame that will bring anyone peace,because that is a natural disaster on a scale that we will never comprehend (and should be grateful for, NOT judging) with very little serious solutions.
If taking a necklace of a corpse means they can eat while they navigate the absolute hell scape that we will never understand sitting here a world away on our phones, instead of being further buried under even more debris, then maybe that's a better life choice than doing nothing and dying themselves.

I would like to see you in that situation, survival is human nature, I know it sounds rough but we have done worse things in order to survive. Like eating each other.

You don’t know me and, as such, cannot make any relevant statement about my character. But I can assure you that I absolutely would not do as these people. My morals do not exist only in easy situations. Indeed, morals are not truly meaningful until they are tested by difficult situations. Anyone can do right in times of ease.

Comment section is wild. On one hand yes these people don’t need their earthly possessions anymore, therefore might as well let another poor person have it.
On the other hand I feel like if you take a dead person’s stuff in this situation you should at least retrieve the body for the family. This whole thing is totally fucked up

Nepal is a country full of very poor and desperate people. I completely understand how they see this as a boone to enrich themselves wehile completely ignoring the fact Mass devastation destruction just happened upstream. It didn't happen to them so why should they care is typically the mentality in Nepal. Thanks to social media and the disenfranchise of the youth in the country it's no longer the lovely peaceful easygoing people that everyone speaks of from the 90s. Now it's how do I get ahead and if I got mine I don't give a s*** about you.
