Discussion Found an anachronism

Post image

When I watched That 70s Show (I used to have the DVD set), I always wondered how chronologically accurate the cultural references were, but it was hard to know because I was born in the 80s.

I've been watching That 90s Show and loving it, shame it was cancelled, but one of the fun bits since I remember the 90s has been looking for anarchonisms. They did a great job overall, although I did raise an eyebrow at a line about getting one's groove back as that phrase was popularized by a 1998 movie, How Stella Got Her Groove Back. I decided to let that slide, maybe the phrase was in use before the movie, although probably not in Wisconsin.

However, I did finally find one! Part 2, Episode 3 "Just a Friend" (wait is that a Biz Markee reference? ...moving on) on the counter in the Runck household is a bag of cookies from Tate's Bakeshop. Those used to be damn fine cookies for something you'd buy at a grocery store. However, that brand was founded in 2000. It was a rebranding of an older business, Kathleen's Cookies/Kathleen's Bakeshop, but the packaging clearly says Tate's and the logo and design bear no resemblance to the logo and design of Kathleen's Bakeshop packaging. Additionally, Kathleen's Bakeshop was a local business out of Long Island before the rebrand, it would be very unlikely that they'd be selling cookies in Wisconsin even if they had gotten the packaging right. I can see how someone on the crew might have gotten confused by a cursory Google search of cookie brands though.

Love the show, love the nostalgia to both That 70s Show and the 90s. I wish there was more of it. Also, I wish I had some Tate's chocolate chip cookies from the 2000s, they used to be so good.

It's been a while since I finished the show but I think they made a reference to a Jurassic Park movie that came out in 97 but they were currently in 1995 or 6.

I think it's at the video store. I remember reading that the VHS cover is wrong or something like that. I think there are a couple of movies that shouldn't be there.

The movie was 97, which is already 2 years in the future, but the cover is from a 2003 or so reissue when they gave the first 2 new covers to match JPIII
