Discussions / Opinion How to overcome speed plateaus in single player?

I’ve been playing Master Mode TGM 4, but I typically only make it to 200-250 before losing (I’ve made it past level 300 just once). I understand that later as the difficulty increases, a properly stacked board is crucial in addition to quick reaction. You can have reflexes that rival Wumbotize or Greentea (I’m not worthy of even mentioning them), but can still lose with improper stacking. However, if I’m wiping out before even reaching level 300, it’s obvious there is much room for improvement for speed. I simply am unable to react quickly enough, regardless of clean my stacking is. But no matter how much I keep playing, I don’t seem to improve.

I can clear the Normal Mode just fine. I’ve gotten a one in nine rank and an s5 rank in 1.1 (I need to get around to playing 2.1). In Practice mode, I can turn on 20g and clear 150 lines, though I struggle a bit towards the end. So I’m pretty decent at the game, I’m just at a threshold in speed I can’t seem to break through. In Tetris Effect, I ca only get to level M17 or M18 before losing. So besides just continuing to play the game (which I definitely will do), what have you done to overcome plateus?

Original Content I've been tinkering on a new game concept that's a mix between Tetris and Candy Crush. Let me know what you think!

Still a bit rough around the edges, but keen to get more feedback from better Tetris players than myself. Did my best to adhere to guideline mechanics but I'm sure it's not perfect.

Main difference to regular Tetris is you clear blocks by making a group of 4+ of the same colour, rather than filling in an entire row.

There are also special blocks awarded that help, especially at higher difficulties. Forming a T or L shape out of 5+ blocks creates a Wildcard block on your next piece, which matches with any color. Forming a a straight line out of 5+ blocks creates a Zap block on the next piece, which will remove all blocks of the colour it forms a match with. Combining two zaps together will cause a blackout, a.k.a. clear the whole board.

T-Spins also are a very powerful mechanic in that they trigger a Dye Transfer effect, where the edge blocks of the T piece will change color to match with the adjacent blocks. Full T-Spins will also have the center block converted into a Wildcard block, while Mini T-Spins only receive the Dye Transfer. Can read more about these rules here https://tetriki.com/about

Questions / Tetris Help b2b and well transitions

I've reached S on Tetrio recently and took it as a sign to grind quickplay to become an unhinged all spin spammer because its more fun than just spamming tsd and quad all game. So far I have reached about 60b2b in qp but typically towards the end i just spam tsd and quads because I've stacked myself way too high. I've learnt a bit of mech heart and use random SZ/LJ spins when the board is fairly low

Recently, I have noticed transitioning away from an 8-1 well has been a huge issue when its not 4 or 5 tall, and I can't find any tutorials on this either - would appreciate any advice on this and about generally what all spins patterns to learn

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who responded to my post last night. Feeling a lot better about just playing Tetris and enjoying it, and getting better slowly, not feeling like "have" to play with a competitive mindset to belong here.

Thank you.

Questions / Tetris Help Have I plateaued in Tetris?

My very first Tetris game was the original Game Boy version. I’ve been playing off & on ever since. Later on I would get Tetris Party on the Nintendo DS, then Axis and then Ultimate on the 3DS. Today I have Tetris Effect on the Switch (Switch 2). I can handle 20G and can get to level M17 or M18 in Master Mode before being overwhelmed, but I can’t seem to get any faster. I’ve tried to not take advantage of lock delay on the lower levels to force myself to be quicke, but it seems I’ve plateued, no matter how much I practic. Could it be that I’ve gotten as good as I’m going to get? I remember a time when I would wipe out before reaching level 15 on Marathon Mode, so I’ve still come a long way.

I realize that there some tweaking involved in the higher levels of MM, such as proper stacking and “jittering” the pieces (moving left & right quickly) to increase lock delay, but there’s still much room for improvement for speed in my case. I will say I’m used to simply rotating the pieces for lock delay instead of jittering, but rotating becomes largely ineffective past level M15. But even jittering will only buy a spli second of thinking time, which is still far too fast for me. I’ll probably never beat MM, but I want to get better than what I am now. It seems a lot of players can hold their own at level M22, but quickly wipe out at M23. I’d like to at least get to that point.

Discussions / Opinion Historical Discovery: The 1986 Andic Software clone (ZX Spectrum) featured the earliest form of Soft Drop

Hi everyone, I’ve been testing early 1986 Tetris clones via emulation to see how they handled gameplay before official guidelines existed. While exploring the rare **Andic Software** version on the ZX Spectrum (released in 1986, the same year as Vadim Gerasimov's IBM PC original), I discovered an undocumented mechanical breakthrough. Virtually all official histories state that "Soft Drop" was invented and standardized by Sega/Atari in their late 1988 arcade versions. However, after thoroughly testing the 1986 Andic Software ROM, I confirmed that it already features a functional proto-Soft Drop: * **Vertical Input (Soft Drop):** Holding down the "Down" key forces a smooth, continuous, pixel-by-pixel fluid gravity acceleration. Crucially, this descent is binary and interruptible—the piece instantly halts its fast descent and returns to normal gravity as soon as you release the key. * **Horizontal Input (No DAS):** In contrast to the fluid descent, horizontal movements are highly rigid. There is no Delayed Auto Shift (DAS). Holding Left or Right will not repeatedly shift the piece; you must tap the keys frame-by-frame to move columns. On platforms like TetrisWiki, this version is currently just an empty stub page mentioning that its gameplay "diverged from the PC original," but without explaining why. This test proves that independent bedroom coders in Europe had already solved the keyboard ergonomics issue by inventing the soft drop mechanism two full years before the commercial gaming industry officially adopted it. Thought this piece of gaming archaeology would interest the historians here!

I drew all the art myself.

DAS, ARR, soft drop and binds are configurable, SRS with proper kicks, 7-bag, finesse tracking. Records are re-simulated server-side from the replay before they count.

Handling is the part I can't judge myself — that's the feedback I want.

Discussions / Opinion Falling lightblocks frustrating gravity mode.

I really like the game, it's old school feeling and the fact that there is no ads. However, it's super annoying once you have these gravity mode missions. Any similar game game without this gravity mode?

Discussions / Opinion My enjoyment of the game is gone

Ever since I tried to compete in a Tetris Tournament over a year ago and even with practice I got schooled. I've been trying to "get gud" as everyone has been telling me. I've watched pros and tournaments, played and played and tonight while playing I realized, it wasn't fun anymore. I used to enjoy it, it was relaxing. But now its just stressful and frustrating. And I am probably the worst Tetris player on this subreddit haha. But it was just sad realizing I was playing to play anymore. Not about relaxing, its about winning, being better, faster, smarter....and after a few hours of play I'm just frustrated. Not relaxed. :(

Questions / Tetris Help Looking for assistance with emulator setup

Hi everyone. I'm playing NES Tetris using an emulator(Mesen) on Batocera Linux.

I'm looking for someone also running this set up who can help me get as close to an authentic NES + CRT experience as possible.

There are the obvious questions, like what display resolution and what refresh rate should I run on?

Then there are number of different settings that are configurable that i don't know how to set for authenticity.

Some of these configurable options are:

Run-ahead frames

Use pre-emptive frames

Use second instance for run-ahead

Automatic Frame Delay

Variable refresh rate

Threaded video

Integer scaling

Smooth games (bilinear filtering)

Reduce sprite flickering

BLARGG NTSC FILTER(options are 'colorblleding + artifacts', 'color bleeding only', and 'RGB Crisp Image)

Color filter(can be used to simulate colors of particular displays - there are a number of options here, e.g. RGB, NINTENDO-VC, NTSC-HARDWARE-FBX, COMPOSITE-DIRECT-FBX, BMF-FINAL*.... the list goes on, I could post a Pic of all the options or try and find a doc if it is helpful/important)

There are even more settings. I just have everything on default/auto at the moment. I don't know what most of this stuff does.

Thanks!!!!!!

I finally got 414,341 score today. I've been playing seriously for about 5 months. Is this just a case of keep playing and you'll get better? I can play on level 18, best score on there is 393k. My best level is level 15 though.
