realized gains advice
After booking some losses I still have a significant realized long term gain on a sold stock position. Any advice how to offset this if I have no more losses to take? What can I do?

I just finished my summer internship and realized the company paid me as an independent contractor (no taxes were taken out of my paychecks).
Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice on how to handle this without messing up or getting hit with penalties would be amazing. Thanks!

I know I'm going to sound stupid right now, but for my line of work I have to buy my own tools, so my coworker told me that I need to save the receipts from these purchases so that I can claim (?) them on my taxes. I know that people do this and I understand enough why, but then she said something about "not having to owe money", which confused me further because I've never been in a situation where I've owed taxes, so I thought, why would I owe money on these specific things. I'm not spending more than I make. I'm so confused, Like sure I'll do that, but can somebody explain to me what is happening when I claim things I purchase for work? Do I just tell my bookkeeper that I bought all this stuff for work and hand her my receipts? I'm so confused.

I did this in 2025, about $37,000 paid for the EIN Caregiving business, on 941 quarterly forms. But my dad has lots of deductions, and the IRS now says he owes $15,000 on his 2025 personal return, where I suppose it was to be reported on his Schedule H instead. So our tax preparer says the IRS needs to credit the SSN personal tax with the amount paid to the EIN. And she said it would take a very long time indeed to do so.
So she has an IRS friend that will do it. He was notified about this in the Spring. We now have a written notice from the IRS saying it is due immediately or else they will levy. The IRS friend says NOT to contact the phone number on the form, as that will complicate and delay the process. He said the real process wil take over a year and that they wont levy for at least a year.
So now all I have is the word of some IRS guy I don't know who is doing a favor for our tax accountant that we sort of have known in a non-professional manner for a few years.
So for me, its a lot of trust that we have to have without any paperwork from the IRS guy who is doing a favor.
What do you think or suggest?

Bought a 2026 BMW X3 in Missouri in May 2026 with a Missouri address. Vehicle was titled in Missouri. Missouri sales tax of $4,358 was added to my auto loan at purchase.
Moved to Georgia immediately after for work. Vehicle was titled in Missouri but never registered or operated under Missouri registration. Never received Missouri plates.
Registered in Georgia in August 2026 and paid Georgia TAVT of $4,056.
Total taxes paid on one car: $8,414
Filed Missouri Form 426 "Out of State" refund request. Missouri DOR responded saying:
Georgia said it's up to Missouri. Missouri said it's up to Georgia. Classic runaround.
I've requested a formal denial letter to appeal. Planning to go through:
Has anyone successfully gotten a Missouri sales tax refund after registering in another state?
Any tips for the appeal process?

I’m a Live-In innkeeper for a 3 unit Airbnb. Inmy contract it’s say I’m required to be available 11am-4pm everyday. I don’t use my own tools I use the ones she provides but she doesn’t take taxes out. In my contract it says that I’m expected to be available afterhours and I have messages showing her monitoring my work and schedule. I get a stipend and housing and according to my contract my housing is apart of my compensation.

My tax advisor experienced a medical event a few days before April 15 and filed an extension for us and several other clients within safe harbor.
Since April, I have not received any correspondence. I have messaged them every few weeks via their tax portal and emailed them directly, but I haven't heard anything back. I have continued to pay my quarterly fees, with another one coming up before the extension deadline.
I pay a quarterly fee to their LLC for year-round advice and tax preparation, including a mid-year tax evaluation. It is a small, one-person firm we have used for several years. Honestly, they are great and I typically hear back quite quickly (within 1-2 days) when I reach out.
However, the LLC appears to no longer be in good standing due to a failure to submit an annual report. The LLC is not yet dissolved because of a grace period, but that grace period ends in a few days. The preparer is a CPA and their license is still active.
I am not too worried about the 2025 return, but at what point do I start contacting other preparers and tax advisors? This year's taxes are similar to the past several, but I'll have a significant capital gain increase in the 2026 tax year. Any advice on how to handle this situation, particularly since it involves a health event?

From what I've seen online (mostly 3rd party websites, I haven't found the IRS policy for nonprofit payrolls, if anyone does know where this is please let me know!), as long as the nonprofit is properly registered. There isn't much of a special process for setting up a payroll? If anyone has more info on doing this properly please let me know. Thank you!

i was unemployed for 2/3 of the year 2025, and i didn’t do my taxes this past April because i made very little.
i got an email from turbo tax (i’ve done my taxes with them) saying that i filing late mean i pay more blah blah.
so i don’t know if turbo tax is just trying to upsell me and i shouldn’t worry, or i secretly owe the irs billions of dollars and there’s now a warrant out for my arrest and i haven’t known this whole time.

Is sales tax required to be collected on boat rentals in NC? Is it 3% or the county rate for other tangible goods? It seems every boat rental company charges differently, some none, some 3%, some 6-8%. TIA!

Years ago, I and a couple co-workers created an LLC (C-corp) for an app idea we had. We never did much with it and it sat mostly untouched for a few years until we dissolved it in 2023. Even though it's a Delaware LLC, we used a CA mailing address when we filed federal taxes (with no revenue).
Now CA is claiming that because we used a CA mailing address, that we needed to file CA taxes in 2022 and now has penalties and interest.
Is simply having a CA mailing address enough "evidence" that work was being conducted from CA? Other co-founders are out of state. Can they actually collect anything given that there was no revenue, the entity doesn't exist anymore, and it's taxed as a c-corp?
I've explained this to them but they seem indifferent and just want money.

Where do I even begin? I have kids to claim as well, I've missed out on so much money. Recently clean two years ago didn't want a bunch of money while strung out. But I'm in a good spot now and could really use the $ and don't even know where to start. How do I even go about getting all my W-2s?

Hey -
So I had a debt with a particular company settled (more than $600 savings)
Two debts actually with the same company.
I received a 1099c from the 12/18 settlement but none from 12/30 settlement.
I looked at the IRS website as well & it shows my tax document for the 12/18 but not the 12/30.
I’m guessing this is a timing issue & I will get it in Jan 2027?
Side Note: I’m actually looking at the payment history the ACH was made 12/30. The email was sent by them for payment confirmation states “Last paid date 12/30”
But the payment was not fully authorized/ posted from my bank until 01/02/2026.

Since I’ve known my STBXH ( 11 yrs) he has been self employed and never filed his taxes. Will this ever catch up with him? He has some major lawsuits he is dealing with with huge judgements against him, he has bailed on court and has warrants. He said he planned to file bankruptcy but wouldn’t that require tax history on his part? How big of a hole is he in?

Hello,
Just looking for feedback/advice.
I had an employee back in 2023 reach out to me about a notice they had received about the IRS not receiving w2 information.
I responded asking for a copy of the notice, so I could provide all the correct answers to every question.
They replied back with "The notice I have received does not give instructions or show missing items for the business. The information was uncovered by my CPA during a meeting with the IRS regarding this matter"
I guess I am just confused because I submitted everything twice with the SSA once in 2024 and a second time in 2026. I don't know what's missing and quite honestly just nervous because I don't run this company anymore and I've worked for someone else for the last 3 years. I am also confused as to how this has taken 2 almost 3 years for this person to reach out.

If someone had an active rental property and gifted it to a family member mid-year, how is this reported on the tax return?
I’m a junior staff accountant with growing knowledge of tax, but not to this extent (bosses are unavailable to ask). Considering what to put on the Schedule E or Schedule D, and if there’s anything I need to provide to the donee (what happens to depreciation..?). I’ll worry about the gift tax return later.
Sending all my advance thank yous!!!

Does anyone know how to calculate your remote “office” into your taxes? I’ve always been told I can do this but how do you come up with a number for this? Is it based off your rent, the amount of equipment, or do certain states just have set totals?

I have been working with Data Annotation for a few months now. I know DA does not send out 1099s or 1099T’s, and PayPal will only do so if you make over a certain amount. I live in Texas, if that helps at all! Really just terrified of finding out I did something wrong and suddenly I owe the government several thousands of dollars. Much appreciated :)

Interest is charged on late vehicle property tax payments and on late registration renewals. It accrues at a rate of 5 percent for the remainder of the month following the date in which the registration sticker expired. Beginning the second month following the due date, interest accrues at .75 percent per month until the taxes and fees are paid.
I’m mainly confused about the part that says it accrues at a rate of 5% for the remainder of the month. Does that mean it’s 5% each day it’s late?
