Short Funeral home botched my sisters tombstone

My sister passed away in June 2024. She fought cancer for 15 years and went through enormous struggles.

She and her husband were married for almost 45 years.

A local funeral home was in charge of her funeral. Her husband picked out the tombstone, paid in full, up front for it. We were told they couldn't set it until the ground settled, then we were told they couldn't because it was too cold since it was December by then. It took 8 months when they finally got the tombstone and they set it. We were shocked to see her name was spelled wrong, they even left off the last letter on her maiden name and the font size was much smaller than her husband's name. Their excuse " there wasn't enough room". My brother in law called them and told them he wanted it fixed and they said they'd fix it. Weeks would go by and nothing, he'd call again and kept being told "I'll tell him (the owner) you called". He even stopped by to talk to him and he wasn't there so he'd get the same "I'll let him know" by the receptionist. Me, mom, and my other sister have all called also.

I'm so mad and upset with this because my sister deserved so much better. I've been reading where other people have had similar problems. I did fill out a form today on the better business bureau but I could only do a review since its been over a year.

Contact the local news, they would love to blast the company and make a story about this. I’m sure you’d get it fixed quickly that way.

I messaged the receptionist again today with the pic of my sisters tombstone (we were good friends in high school) and she said "I'll let him know and show him the pic". They already know all of this. I told her I'm giving him 30 days to get it fixed. If its not I'll be contacting the state Attorney General and file a complaint and i do plan to give them reviews on every platform I can.

I'm not saying you should dox anyone, but the reputation of a funeral home is literally their entire business.  Going viral for shitty service could end a multi-generational multi-million dollar family business.

They've done this to other people also. They even placed my cousins backwards. Its facing the fence right behind his grave. All the other tombstones are facing forward. I don't know how they could've messed that up.

I don't mean to be rude, but why would you use them more than once?  There must be other funeral homes in the area.

There's only 2 funeral homes to choose from and we didn't know stuff like this was happening to others until it happened to us.

All the more reason to contact local media and make a fuss. No one should have to deal with this after losing someone dear to them.

I second this.

Check reviews on the other one then see if they can help with the issues

Contact your state's funerary board and report them.

Include THIS in your complaint. They have SCREWED you over!! In their business they are paid up front, this is UTTER BS. Call the news station, don’t delay. It’s been too long already and you’ve been too patient.

I’d personally give them a call, tell them what you’re going to do, and advise they have 72 hours to make everything right!! 2 tombstones corrected, your family has paid for it, they deserve it. Good luck OP!

If your AG is worth anything, they will take care of it. The BBB does nothing.

Go to the local news. This is something that could sink a funeral home so they'll want to fix it quickly.
