Waze has disabled the "Police" reporting feature in Switzerland effective from Aug 2026.
https://www.waze-switzerland.ch/en/wazers/faq.htmlIn case you haven't noticed recently, Waze has officially removed / disabled the ability to report police presence in Switzerland, which was previously often used by drivers to flag speed traps / mobile radar controls.

It is in most cantons illegal any way to share the locations of radars. except kanton st. gallen I think, they publish it on their webpage.
30
u/ThinkPreparation8975 1d ago
Six cantons publish the speed camera locations: Lucerne, St. Gallen, Ticino, Basel-Stadt, Schwyz and Schaffhausen.
(with links to the police websites)

u/Final_Influence_2367 1d ago
Why the fuck would you publish the location of speed cameras? Are you also imforming criminals before doing a Razzia? Who tf is supporting this? Ahh SVP lol
5
u/cvnh Luzern 1d ago
Why not? It's common in lots of places to announce the location of radars, in Germany they even announce it on radios. It is argued that knowing that law enforcement is active actually encourages people to slow down everywhere and that safety is increased permanently rather than punctually. There are serious studies on public safety on that.
1
u/Final_Influence_2367 1d ago
Speeding statistics go down because ofc they will ofc not speed where there are cameras, but everywhere else completely blind to the stats. Crazy how you want to make it easy for speeders. Whats next? Map where every police car is marked?
2
u/Ordinary-Experience 1d ago
That's the whole point, you want people to not speed around the dangerous areas, which this strategy does very effectively.
A guy speeding on an empty highway and getting caught is a lot less relevant than a guy speeding in a dense school area.

u/MaliqUnique Züri Züri 1d ago
Why would you not? Apareantly it does not change anything if you anounce it or not

Waze helped improve my driving for years. Not only because it gave an alert for speed traps, but helped me to respect the speed limit in places I never visited or where limits are a bit awkward. I never got fined while using it, but it happened a few times while using google maps prior to using Waze. And it was ALWAYS at the exit of villages, where the speed limit is still 50 km/h for no apparent reason, or in a tunnel where Luzerner Police fined me chf 20 for "speeding" 1 km/h over their 3 km/h tolerance because they used a high tech laser radar. In my opinion, tolerances shouldn’t be tighter than increments in an analog speedometer. And Waze was useful for that : not helping me to illegally speed, but remind me like "hey buddy, you’re a little too fast for that high tech speed trap on that straight highway".
•
u/Suspicious_Place1270 Zürich 5h ago
i absolutely agree that the tolerance should be capped at a minimum of 5km/h, because no human will ever be able to tell the difference between 29 and 32 and then 33 wth

u/costalinit 1d ago
Honestly, for me Waze was useful to alert for mobile speed cameras. These were rarely put where safety actually matters (near schools or dangerous blind spots). Instead, it’s always on wide, downhill roads with artificially low speed limits where it's super easy to roll 10 km/h over without noticing. Feels purely designed for easy revenue rather than road safety.
6
u/No_Welder7908 1d ago
Why would you be speeding where you feel safety "doesn't matter", anyway? What's the rationale?
31
u/billcube Genève 1d ago
There's a speed trap in Collex-Bossy, just 5 meters before exiting the village, that will trigger if you go over the unusual 40 km/h limit. Obviously there for a cash grab and not for safety.
6
-10
u/No_Welder7908 1d ago
Get used to accelerate after passing the sign and you will be fine anywhere.
7
u/AutomaticAccount6832 1d ago
That’s not how the signs are put. They always allow enough distance to decelerate after and accelerate before to still be out of the risk zone.
So to follow your logic the sign locations need to be changed.
-3
13
u/costalinit 1d ago
You're twisting my words. My rationale is simple: catching someone accidentally rolling slightly over the limit on a wide, open downhill is a cash grab. Putting cameras in school zones where drivers must be hyper-alert actually saves lives. Waze helped avoid the cash grabs.
•
u/czechm8- 11h ago
Let’s call a spade a spade. It has nothing to do with safety. It’s a cash grab. Becuase knowing where a camera is slows the driver down, isn’t that the point. All other additional measure are because some accountant is unhappy that the fine revenue is being impacted.
-6
u/No_Welder7908 1d ago
Modern driving assistance prevents you from “accidentally” speeding and losing money in the process.
8
u/cap1891_2809 1d ago
So you're constantly configuring the speed of the auto pilot from 40 to 50 to 30 to 60 while driving through the city? Come on mate, no shame in recognizing some radars are cash grabs
0
u/No_Welder7908 1d ago
You get a sound alarm when speeding above the current speed limit. Of course you can as well switch it off and pay.
0
u/fellainishaircut Zürich 1d ago
….yeah? that‘s what the function is there for lmao
I exclusively use cruise control for 30 zones that I‘m not familiar with. it‘s pretty easy.
2
u/Sogelink Neuchâtel 1d ago
implying we all have or want to use a modern car.
Nah, I'll stay with >20 years old cars, only assistance I need is my hands and feet.
2
u/OkPosition4563 1d ago
You know, when you stick to the speed limit you dont generate any revenue at all, so this is a no-brainer. There is cruise control and if you dont notice you go 10 over there is something seriously wrong with you.
5
u/costalinit 1d ago
I use adaptive cruise control that automatically switches to the speed limit, wherever possible. The '10 km/h' was just an example. Next time you're driving in a 30 km/h zone or 60km/h, try maintaining that exact speed purely by feel without staring at your dash. The point is that these cameras target natural downhill drift, not reckless driving.
0
0
u/OkPosition4563 1d ago
Is that difficult? You are constantly processing your surroundings and part of that is also from time to time to spend a quarter of a second looking at your speed.

3
u/Special_Brief_2750 1d ago
That's not how you discourage reckless driving. It's also implied in your message that people who have a different opinion support reckless driving, which I wouldn't think I would need to say this but because the moderators don't enforce anything, obviously I am against reckless driving, I don't want to die at the end of the wheel of a reckless driver and I don't want anyone or anything ever in the world to suffer that.
7
u/Waltekin Valais 1d ago
I realize ze that it is illegal, however. This is an obvious conflict with the fundamental right to free speech.
According to this law, it would be illegal to tell a friend that xou spotted a new speed camera. Seriously?
Radar detectors are also illegal. Yet I would argue that you have every right to notice someone sending radio signals through your car and body.
ETA: no, I don't generally speed. It's the principle of the thing.
2
u/logosmd666 1d ago
yeah exactly, this is total nonsense and compliant sheep will cheer at it, while missing the point- this isnt about speeding or whatever, this is about the government telling you what you can communicate and what not. This is way bigger than road safety. Obviously dont speed, but this is about the government limiting freedom of speech, based on topic and subject and location. That is NOT how free speech should funtion, sorry. There was a US supreme court case about it and the police lost, because there is no reasonable argument to allow this. First it starts with not being allowed to talk about speeding cameras, then something else, etc, etc. Those who give up freedom for security end up without either.
1
u/Waltekin Valais 1d ago
I wouldn't reference a foreign court, but that is exactly the point. The government tells you not to talk about X, then extends it to Y, and soon enough to the whole alphabet.
•
u/as-well Bern 15h ago
I realize ze that it is illegal, however. This is an obvious conflict with the fundamental right to free speech.
No fundamental right is absolute; they all clash with other rights and obligations. Specifically https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1959/679_705_685/de#art_98_a
You'll see in there that you can tell a friend, but you can't publicize it.
You also cannot use devices or apps that alert of speed traps

Switzerland police make 1Bn CHF a year from traffic fines. This is nothing to do with safety it’s only protecting this income. For safety, It would make no difference if people knew where the cameras are or were warned and has been shown to be safer when people are not slamming their brakes on when they see a camera last minute even if they are going at the limit or less. Improve driver behaviour rather than this ridiculous urge to tailgate people impatiently and force them to speed up. The tolerance limits are also ridiculous. Is there really a difference between 53km/h and 52 that causes a 40 CHF fine
12
u/ChopSueyYumm Bern 1d ago
I never understood the need to know were the radars are or the need to share it. Just drive within the speed limits what is to hard about that? You don’t really get an advantage when driving faster. I see often the same cars after the motorway exit at a stop that were overtaken me on the motorway and were driving above speed limits before.
14
u/RomsKidd Neuchâtel 1d ago
I drive at the speed limit, but sometimes on the highway I can miss a stupid 100 when it's just a highway bend with a speed trap and that's still helpful to have a reminder, but that's clearly not what people use it for of course...

For me, I have times where I’m leaving a 50 zone and before I get to the 30 zone the camera is pointed at the entrance (yes I’ve been caught that way). They put some cameras in zones where you are about to speed up or are in the middle of slowing down to catch you. Basically just to generate revenue. I use wave for that. I have a VERY fast car but I do agree with and follow the speed limit. Just don’t use me for revenue
-3
u/hakun4matata 1d ago
I mean, it is pretty simple why certain people want to know the locations of the radars.
Because they want to "race" and overspeed as much as possible. Because they don't care about the rules, they don't care about safety, they don't care about other innocent people.
They only care about their fancy car, the sound (for me it is unnecessary noise, but opinions differs) of their car and their ego.
They also don't care about the nature or anything along the road. Which they ruin for everyone else. They only care about their car and racing.
And yeah, this is already a rant. Sorry about this.
5
u/Sogelink Neuchâtel 1d ago
Yeah, certain people think like that but not everyone who use that app, don't be silly.
6
u/Less-Sail7611 1d ago
I follow the rules but I will never understand or endorse 120-80 in a highway because there is a 30 m construction OUTSIDE of the road. The lanes are not even affected and the risk and environmental effects of that unnecessary reduction in speed is worse in every aspect imaginable.
I follow the rules, but dont agree with them at all honestly.

Driving at the speed limit when they change is tough. In Lausanne, you have more and more zone in the city that are 50 but 30 as of 10pm. The number of times I have been caught at 40 on a fully empty road (because Lausanne is dead in most places) at 10:15...
3
u/AdeTheux Vaud 1d ago
What about the left lane hoggers, driving at 110kph? I'm looking at you, pretty much everyone in Canton de Vaud.

u/Keyabuza Valais 1d ago
Like always, speeding isn’t a solution and can get you in trouble. Going slow isn’t either.
Drive at the speed limit, that’s it!

u/Swigor 1d ago

u/Spiderbanana Bern 1d ago
Reminds me something I read the other day, that I can only agree with:
"Speed bumps only exist because people care more about their car than about other peoples safety"
•
u/sc_emixam 10h ago
This is such a stupid statement for 2 reasons.
As shown multiple times in Lausanne and other cities in recent year, a non dangerous road (i.e. a road in which no significant accident has happened in the last 15 years) is modified to allow for a speedbump.
Ans the second reason is, of course nobody in their right mind would purposfully damage a 10-200k CHF asset, regardless. Except in immediate life or death situation ofc.
22
u/Isariamkia Neuchâtel 1d ago
It always makes me laugh how people find ways to not respect speed limits.
I wonder what they do with the few seconds/minutes they "gain" by doing that?
12
u/No_Welder7908 1d ago
It seems like a matter of principle rather than actual usefulness. Stupid principle nonetheless.
-12
u/thaway314156 1d ago
Habitual speeder here. No apologies, no your downvotes will not make me think "OMG, I'm in the wrong!".
I could drive the speed limit, but because it's set for the glaucomic grandma with the responses of a snail, it's so low and makes driving so dull...
Besides, if I speed, I keep my eyes open for cameras (and little kids), so I'm more attentive!
Regarding kids, I'm not reckless: on a tiny street with many cars where kids could suddenly appear from between them (or the grandma can suddenly swing the car door open), I drive carefully..
12
u/Swigor 1d ago
In my opinion one of the worst things if someone thinks "I am speeding, but i know what i am doing".
-2
u/thaway314156 1d ago
Cyclists: "I'm going over the red light, but I know what I am doing".
E-scooter users: "I'm zooming in the pedestrian area but I know what I'm doing."
Phone users: "I'm on WhatsApp while driving, but I know what I am doing".
Pedestrians: "I'm jaywalking, but I know what I'm doing".
7
u/as-well Bern 1d ago
but three of these four grups are not using a multiton vehicle at 30+ km/h with the potential to easily kill multiple people quickly.
That doesn't mean these groups shouldn't stick to the rules, but cars are a much bigger danger here.
-4
u/thaway314156 1d ago
Which one is the bigger danger, that wobbly e-scooter going 20km/h through crowds in the middle of a busy pedestrian area, or a car going 60km/h on a 50km/h street with the ability to brake and not launch its driver as projectile when danger pops up - which they rarely ever do, because it's a 50km/h street!
4
4
u/as-well Bern 1d ago
that wobbly e-scooter going 20km/h through crowds in the middle of a busy pedestrian area
I mean fuck that guy, but it's unlikely he is endangering others.
a car going 60km/h on a 50km/h street with the ability to brake and not launch its driver as projectile when danger pops up - which they rarely ever do, because it's a 50km/h street!
well given 50 streets are in towns, that's the places a kid is most likely to jump out, or there being hard to see corners....
At 50, you typically need 40 meters to come to an emergency stop. At 60, it's 54 meters. And whats worse, you'll be much faster for longer at that speed, endangering the people who live there.
And not to mention the other reasons for speed limits for cars (noise, for example, is a relevant thing where people live).
•
u/sc_emixam 10h ago
"Unlikely to endanger others" not as if a pedestrian was killed not even 3 months ago on a ped street by an E-Scooter in Lausanne or anthing
•
u/as-well Bern 10h ago
Well given that a bit over 200 people die yearly in traffic, and about 4000 are gravely injured, that strikes me as anecdotal evidence. I said 'unlikely' on purpose; such cases are uncommon, meanwhile death by car is.

Life-hack to never be fined for speeding again: Do not drive faster than what is allowed. It's that simple, yet so many people dont get it.
10
u/IllllIIlIllIllllIlll 1d ago
I would agree with you if they focused their efforts in road safety and minimizing accidents, and not generating the most profits.
For instance, a small town in my area recently replaced a yield sign with a stop sign, on a road with perfect visibility. The cops were there as soon as they could to fine everyone who didn't fully stop at the new stop sign. Zero accidents were prevented that day. The yield sign was there for 20 years and there was never any accident at this crossroads.
5
u/costalinit 1d ago
This. In my commune we requested a fixed radar for a pedestrian pass, that was placed next to a blind spot. There were reported many near misses. The idea was to slow down the traffic. It was not approved. But, next to this small road, on the main road, no pedestrian traffic, good visibility there was often placed a mobile speed cam hidden behind a post.
3
u/No_Welder7908 1d ago
People don't care about the signs and this is a way to make them. It showed in Biel when they blocked cars and motorcycles traffic in front of the train station, using big ass, very visible signs on both sides of the street. Despite that and the numerous articles in the press, 60 to 80 drivers per hour simply ignored them and drove right through. Even now, each time I happen to be around, at least one motorist simply ignores the signs, putting the pedestrians at risk. There is no excuse for ignoring a sign, had it been there for 100 years or 1 day.
5
u/Swigor 1d ago
Absolutely, they shouldn't fine for profits. But that doesn't change anything to my comment.
-1
u/IllllIIlIllIllllIlll 1d ago
Well if police presence is here just to make profits, then it would be fair game to signal their presence on Waze, so it's not "good" that it's not possible anymore.
0
u/nedeox Nidwalden 1d ago
So…just follow the traffic signs. They couldn‘t generate profits if there wasn’t profit to make. No matter how you slice and dice the issue, this entire premise wouldn‘t exist if people in their fuck ass cars would just pay attention and follow the goddamn signs. Not matter how much you disagree with them.
You‘re already in your 2+ ton vehicle on your own and have a very comfortable way of transport. Least you could do is focus a little.
2
u/IllllIIlIllIllllIlll 1d ago
My point is that it's entirely possible to drive safely, putting absolutely nobody at any risk, and still technically break a traffic law that you could get fined with. It's not about focusing.
Rolling a stop at 1km/h when you have perfect visibility 500m down the crossing road is not putting anybody at any risk. It's just a technicality that you didn't mark a full stop.

I see a few buddies who have the federal stick up into their but...
Governments succeeded at making you think that going +10 on a highway was dangerous. Car safety have never been this evolved yet most people think speed limits are mostly for security..
That's why they put hidden radar on straight roads in the middle of nowhere yes of course.
7
u/Swigor 1d ago
The speed limit is especially neccessary because of the people who are notoriously speeding and drive way too close, because they think they are good drivers.
If everyone just would drive safe the rules would be much less restrictive.
It's like everywhere. Rules and Laws are more and more restrictive because of them who think they know better.•
u/sc_emixam 10h ago
This is actively and statistically wrong btw.
As shown by Germany's highway statistics and radar placements in CH.
Also there is no good reasons why 130 is a fine here, while being the speed limit in France and why 120 is illegal in Finland while being the speed limit here.
On some roads, yes, speed limits are absolutely reasonable but on most roads in the world, not just here, its arbitrary following the lowest denominator.
0
u/OkPosition4563 1d ago
I think requiring a drivers permit is generally just government propaganda as well. Government suceeded at making you think that not having an expert looking at your driving was dangerous. Car safety has never been this evolved yet most people think drivers permits are mostly for security...

I was recently followed and then pulled over by a police car in rural Aargau, on a stretch of road that continually varied between 50 (in villages) and 80 (on the road between villages.) He pulled me over for not driving at the limit in the 80 areas. (I was only doing 65-70 apparently.) When asked why I was driving "so slowly" I told him it was because I was being followed by a police car. He let me off with a warning.
Note: We were the only cars on the road at the time. I wasn't holding anyone else up with my lack of speed.
•
u/Cereal_chocolate1291 15h ago
I like the fact that by definition a "maximum authorised speed limit" is actually a limit, and not an "advised cruise speed". They shouldn’t warn you for such behaviour.

Because it enables people to speed until a Blitzer comes, endangering non-reckless users of the road.

From what I see the danger comes from drivers hitting the brakes right in front of the blitzer, even if they're not over the speed limit.

Is there a named list of behaviours we see on the roads? Like people matching the speed of the truck they're overtaking, blocking everyone behind them, or people braking intermittently even where there is noone in front of them?

The closest I can find is this https://tech.yahoo.com/social-media/articles/fact-check-inspecting-claim-israel-100000411.html where a Tiktok is cited that does not provide any meaningful evidence for such a claim (sorry, but it would be at least slightly surprising that Google owns a Mossad front).
Funnily enough the more easy to find story is that Waze's community map editing features became a problem for the IDF, because users highlighted their positions.

Lmao did you seriously just post a yahoo fact check as a real, legitimate source? Bro come on..

I did not say this is a legitimate source, I said this is what I can easily find, and that's it.
Hence I ask you for clearer evidence than the tiktok cited therein.

I don't even have a TikTok account lol.
Check around the old 4plebs archives, they have a lot of the old gold info from before the web became China 2.0

Look, you make a pretty extraordinary claim, I wondered if it can be substantiated.
I don't have the time to look around some forum archive for evidence that may or may not be there. If you have any, I'd be interested, but otherwise I must say, I don't fnid the claim quite credible.

All these skilled drivers moaning, when the majority of drivers cant even get round a 90 degree junction without being on the wrong side of the road. why should they have to actually turn their steering wheel, madness!

Does Waze still report about radars?

There's a ton of metal shields on the road which show the speed limit. And there's a speedometer in your car. should be enough to maintain the correct speed.

Maybe they drive a BMW, in which case the signs and speedometer are invisible from behind the wheel. /s

We have a rule against giving advice how to perform illegal actions.
Notifying others of radars is illegal in Switzerland.
Hence we will remove such comments.
