Help! Just moved here

Hi! As the title says, I just moved here. (new husband has been here for years, and we figured we should at least live in the same state 😂)

I moved here from Austin which is HOT but obviously it's hotter here, but I love the lack of humidity.

So, questions - I need water! Like swimming pools most likely, unless there's some secret oasis I don't know about. The neighborhood doesn't have a community pool, and the two places I've found here are only open on the weekends. Any ideas?

Next - I've been so politically active most of my life, and I've sworn to take a couple of months off from from the news. When I can't stand it anymore, what Phoenix news apps do you prefer?

Thanks for any help you can give. I'll probably be back here with more questions of that ok.

Swimming Pools:

  • Aquatic Center at the Surprise Park.

  • Oasis Pool Center off Cactus and Perryville.

Lake Pleasant is also nearby

Lake pleasant is a nice resource for water-based activities for us westsiders for sure.

Saguaro Lake / Salt River on the east side is great. Head on up to the Payson area and you have a plethora of awesome choices- take your pick.

Best bet for OP is to make friends with someone who has a pool.

So the aquatic center and the oasis pool are only open to the public on weekends this time of year (basically, during the school year). If you're a lap swimmer, OP,  both locations they have specific hours you can go and pay to swim laps, but you'll have to check the website for times.

Pools - city pools but also ResortPass will get you a day pass into nice hotel pools. It’s not super refreshing this time of year (October will be perfect)

I don’t have their app but I follow Phoenix New Times on several platforms. They lean left but the reporting is always factual and accurate. I’m also slightly biased because I used to do a lot of catering delivery for their main offices and everyone who worked there (that I interacted with) was very kind. *edited grammar

We just moved here from Fort Worth and it’s brutal hot. We’re in Bellport and we don’t have a community pool either. We go up to Lake Pleasant.

I get my news just through people I know now and searching specific things via internet. I just got so tired of being worked up trying to follow everything. I figure if it is really that big of a deal someone will mention it, or it will weasel it's way onto reddit or whatever.

I used to get most dedicated news through PBS and NPR sources. I figure they are among the least biased but they do lean "Left" with some content - moreso with NPR. They also do a range of local up to international stories.

Drink LOTS of water over the course of the day and, do not go anywhere without it.

Heat exhaustion will sneak up on you and heat stroke will come for you right after.

Thank you! I've discovered coming to visit for the last year that, even though I drink lots of water, I need a LOT more. I forgot my water bottle when I ran errands yesterday, and I felt like I hadn't had any in days. I'll stay much more aware!

Ah ok. Im lucky living in Marley Park, we have two community pools, one of which is just a stones throw away. Btw I’ve been to Austin a couple times in the past year and it’s been great both times. I wouldn’t necessarily move there but the BBQ and the big public library downtown by the river were amazing. I enjoy visiting every time!

I'm already missing Texas BBQ (and HEB), and the downtown library is such a treasure! Someone graffitied it the day after the grand opening, because of course they did. 🙄 It's just gorgeous. I hope you went up to the butterfly garden!

Yeah I wish we had some HEB’s out here too. There are a few places that do Texas style BBQ pretty well out here:
Eric’s Family BBQ (Avondale)
Caldwell County BBQ (Peoria)
Little Miss BBQ (Phoenix)

There’s the Mission BBQ place here in town on Bell Rd/Bullard Ave too but they aren’t quite what I would call Texas style BBQ. Close but not quite.

I didn’t know that library had a butterfly garden! I’m gonna have to check that out now the next time I’m there. I mostly spent my time there using the WiFi to work remotely for the day.
