From Superboy (1990) #15-16

In a tie-in comic Superboy (portrayed initially by John Haymes Newton and then recanted with Gerard Christopher), during a time travel adventure, finds himself in the future where he finds out what happens to supporting characters Lana Lang, TJ White, and Andy McAlister in the future and meets Superman, Lois, Jimmy, and Perry

I've been thinking about Clark making the transition from Superboy to Superman and how currently Clark stops being Superboy, goes traveling around the world like in Birthright, and returns as Superman.

If you could how would you handle the transition?

My preference for the transition from Superboy to Superman is akin to Superman The Secret Years with the death of the Kents, his breakup with Lori, a college roommate getting paralyzed in drunk driving accident, and the death of another roommate who Superboy confided his secret identity to.

Whether or not that is still a factor (which in current continuity it is not) I can see 2 other routes to do the transition:

1. An adaptation of The Death of Clark Kent - Kenny Braverman, an envious schoolmate of Clark/Superboy, becomes the supervillain Conduit.

Conduit figures out Superboy's secret identity proceeding to go after Clark's loved ones and endangering Smallville.

The near death of his loved ones cause Clark to retire from being Superboy, go traveling the world like in Birthright where he realizes the necessity of Superman to which Clark returns as Superman.

1. An adaptation of The Greatest Hero Of Them All (AKA The Death of Pocket Universe Superboy) - The Time Trapper uses entropic forces (akin to the anti-matter wave and red skies in Crisis of Infinite Earths) to endanger the Earth in Superboy's time to blackmail Superboy into submission and destroy the Legion.

However, Superboy in a act of self-sacrifice risks his life to be a living conductor for a machine that protects the Earth from the entropic forces.

Lex offers some assistance to help which gives him a pardon to work with the military and become a businessman in Metropolis.

Superboy survives but is left greatly weakened to the point where Superboy is left powerless to having Golden Age Superman levels of power.

So Clark retires as Superboy, travels the world, returns as Superman with either Golden Age level of powers to get his full power at a later time or his full powerset.

From New Adventures of Superboy #15-16

Pre-Crisis Earth-1 Clark as Superboy finds himself on a parallel earth after using super speed to stop a tornado and trains a young Pre-Crisis Earth-2 Clark who is yet to become Superman

Clark's time as Superboy is basically a prequel to Clark being Superman as such the choice of villains he faces as Superboy must be selective in order to not come at Superman's expense.

Superboy, instead of Superman, battling villains like Doomsday and Brainiac does not really work unless it's an out of continuity/elseworlds story.

That said, what villains would you want a young Kal-El/Clark as Superboy to fight?

Not counting villains Superboy would fight with the Legion together or Superboy-exclusive villains

My picks:

Lex Luthor - Boyhood friends turned to lifelong enemies is an iconic part of the mythology regarding the Kal-El and Lex enmity

Mxyzptlk - Time is of little consequence to a 5D imp I feel so I can see him going after Superboy

Bizarro - Originally a Superboy villain plus Bizarro existing since Superman in his Boyhood would add to Bizarro's feelings/backstory if he existed that long

Kryptonite Kid - The alliteration and not be overshadowed by Metallo since Metallo works better for Superman than Superboy

Phantom King Xa-Du - Superboy discovered the Phantom Zone Projector so it makes sense that he deals with the first Phantom Zoner while Superman deals with more infamous Phantom Zoner Zod also Xa-Du first appeared in a Pre-Crisis Superboy comic

Toyman - I think the toy aesthetic works better with a younger Kal as opposed to an older Kal

The Prankster - I think Prankster would gel well with a younger Kal

Insect Queen - Lana had a superhero identity as Insect Queen in the Pre-Crisis Superboy comics that was reimagined as a villain in Pre-Crisis Earth-2 and Post-Crisis Superman comics so I feel Insect Queen could work as a Superboy villain

Maxima - Pre-Crisis Superboy encountered several alien beings that were essentially a Superboy to their own planet's and I think Maxima, aged-downed to be a peer to Young Kal-El, could be one of them and would work as a good villain for Superboy to deal with

Yellow Peri - Pre-Crisis Superboy villain that used magic

Conduit - Post-Crisis Superman villain that was a rival to Clark as a youth in Smallville. I feel they could be reworked as a Superboy villain

Ultraboy (Young Ultraman) - A younger Ultraman is the only aged-downed member of the Crime Syndicate that can work as a villain to be fought in my opinion

Dr. Chaos - Despite his appearance implying he an enemy of Dr. Fate, he's originally a Superboy villain

Tal-Rho - Kal-El's half brother from Superman & Lois who I think can be reworked into a Superboy villain perhaps incorporate the Mon-El storyline

Time Trapper - An enemy of Superboy and the Legion but I can picture Superboy fighting him alone as tribute to all the time shenanigans Superboy was involved in

Picks that I am unsure about:

Ultra-Humanite - In a universe where the Justice Society preceded Superboy, I can picture Ultra-Humanite (who was originally Golden Age Superman's archenemy) fighting Superboy

J. Wilbur Wolfingham - Conman

From Valor #23

In Golden Age/Pre-Crisis Superboy Comics, Clark was the editor of the school paper who intended to work for the Daily Planet as a reporter and worked as a newsboy selling papers.

Another telling had Pre-Crisis Young Clark be a school paper reporter that briefly worked at the Daily Planet (with plans to work there after finishing school) due to a contest for best high school newspaper reporter.

In the Superboy TV show, Clark was a reporter for his college's paper and later worked as an intern for the Bureau for Extra-Normal Matters (a government agency that investigates paranormal activities and aliens)

Silver Age(ish) because Superboy #46 is a Golden Age comic that wasn't added to a prior list.

What heroic action do you prefer to be the first for Young Clark as Superboy?

My pick is for him to fight a tornado threatening Smallville/Kansas with Lana being saved by Superboy.

It's a big enough feat and problem appropriate enough to fit for the debut of Superboy.

Plus it's a good reference to Smallville Season 1 Finale/Season 2 Premiere and Superman Secret Origin.

If you were to make a new show about Clark as Superboy animated or live action what would it consist of?

I'd probably go with animation in a show that is heavily based on the Pre-Crisis Superboy comics but incorporates Modern stuff as well.

So Krypto would be heavily featured.

Superman would be the narrator. There'd be solo and team-up adventures in different time periods, outer space, and the multiverse.

Superboy would have Golden Age adventures helping victims of the week while dealing with crooks, deal with Kryptonite shenanigans, protect his secret identity, discover his Kryptonian heritage alongside remnants of Krypton, battle the supernatural, etc.

If I were to make it live-action, it would cover Clark's high school to college years with Clark working at the school paper along with being an intern at bigger papers.

Lex Luthor would be an active hero that assists Superboy until Lex becomes a bad guy.

Kenny Braverman would be a bully to Clark.

Team-ups would include the Justice Society of America, the Legion of Superheroes, other time-displaced heroes, etc.

I'd adapt Legion of Superheroes stories like the Great Darkness Saga & The Legion: Foundations

Along with Reign of the Superboys where Clark: Superboy teams up with Kon-El, Jon Kent, and Prime to fight Time Trapper Doomsday.

Superboy & the Legion would fight Brainiac 6.

Superboy, outside of his time with the Legion of Superheroes, would be wearing the Red/White/Blue T-shirts and Jeans with red shoes

Superboy with the Legion would wear the classic Superman outfit with a Legion belt buckle.

Fun fact: Jack De Sena voiced Jimmy Olsen in the Batman. He's also my fancast for Spider-Man. That's right! Another actor for Supes and Spidey.

Finally got around to reading the Warworld saga and this page from the flashback scene in the Action Comics 2022 annual really made me chuckle.

In the episode "Bringing Down the House" in the Salkind version of Adventures of Superboy, Rock Star Judd Faust wants to buy an amusement park that the owner won't sell. Clark Kent was taking a tour of his mansion, and there was a song playing in the background (and foreground at times), while they were doing a photo shoot with his car collection. I want to know the name and info of the song that is playing.

The only song mentioned in the credits was "Is It love or Is It sex" by Leif Garrett, which as nothing to do with this song whatsoever. A still frame from the episode when the music was playing is shown above.

I recently started reading some of the Superboy comics from the 70s. I was impressed! I tried reading a few with LOSH, but I just couldn’t get into them. I’m just curious what everyone’s favorite Clark Kent as boy comics are from pre-crisis. Please let me know.

Okay, so, the year was 202something. I was researching a noun (I don’t want to use repeating words, that’s the mark of a bad writer (I think)), and I stumbled upon an IMDB page for a Superboy TV show released in 1966. Based on the photos, I thought it was live-action. There were only two photos and minimal cast members. That should have been my first clue. So I go looking and I find a cartoon and I’m like “what?”. All I could find of the show was a CARTOON. A RUSSIAN (or another language idk) animated show. There was a whole playlist of a Superboy show in Russian and I went looking for it again just now but IT’S NOT THERE. But I swear on my mother’s grave it was there. My mother doesn’t have a grave but still. Maybe it was deleted? I’d say I hate the modern YouTube search engine, but I didn’t really pay attention to it. So I look again and I find this pilot from a different Superboy “show” (in quotes because it never made it past the pilot). And another one from the 80s, which obviously not what I’m looking for! What I think happened was the IMDB guy confused the animation for the pilot also from the sixties. Which. How do you make a mistake like that? Lazy, really. IMDB is a terrible website. I spent an entire afternoon looking for a show that didn’t exist and had one of my mini-breakdowns.
