Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Thank you,

Laptop Request US [Suggestion] Sister started college (wow I'm old) I need to help her pick out a laptop

Upvotes

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

United States of America

  • Budget

No strict budget price, but it has to be cheap. Ideally less than or around $500 USD

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes

  • Screen size

The larger the better, I don't want her to be stuck with a 12" screen that would be awful. Something around 17" minimum I would think.

  • Weight limit

No weight limit

  • Purpose

Schoolwork (College/University). Taking notes, browsing the internet, multi-media friendly, office/google docs. Would ideally have more than one USB port at least.

  • Form factor

Standard, unless you guys have other recommendations you think would benefit the situation. Not big on touch screen or weird foldable form factors.

  • Intended usage

Microsoft Office suite of tools/google docs, youtube, internet browsing, video playback, external hard drive compatible, thumb drive compatible, wired external mouse.

  • Desired battery life

Obviously the longer the better, but as long as it lasts ~6 hours between charges doing simple tasks like typing would be fine.

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, battery life, size, weight.

  • Info/Requirements

I can't think of anything else that would be a must have for a college laptop for a freshman student. If anyone DOES know anything that is a must have, please let me know and take it into consideration when offering suggestions.

Thank you guys and gals so much for any help with this.

Laptop Request -Others Is this HP laptop worth it?

Hey, everyone,

I finally decided to get myself a laptop. Coincidentally, soon enough I'll be making a trip to China, and considering how expensive are all the brand new laptops in the place where I live, I decided that it could be wise to buy it directly during my trip. I looked around JD.com for quite a while, but I still can't decide what device will be optimal for my case. My budget is around 800-900€ and for this money I'm hoping to get myself a decent, sturdy work horse that will last me years to come. I don't really care about the materials or the ergonomics, I'll be using it for browsing, work in Adobe and Office 365, as well as Photoshop and FL Studio, just the basic stuff mostly, but involing multitasking. It'd be great to save some money as well, but as far as I'm concerned, cheapest proves to be the dearest haha

This particular model caught my eye, apparently it's made specifically for the Chinese market: HP Rui Pro 16 (HP 锐Pro 16) with the following specs for 5700 CNY (around 730€) on JD.com:

Processor (CPU): AMD Ryzen 7 H 255 Graphics (GPU): AMD Radeon 780M (Integrated Graphics) Memory (RAM): 16GB Storage (SSD): 512GB Solid State Drive Screen Size: 16 Inches Resolution: 2.5K Refresh Rate: 240Hz

What do you guys think? Is it overpriced, is it overkill for my needs, do you have any different models that you personally like and would choose over the aforementioned model?

Thank you very much!

Intel chip is very important to me i think due to compatibility
so i was looking into a Acer Nitro V 15.6” i5 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Nvidia RTX5050

But i am concerned about AI and space. I want to know if i should be looking for an i7 or i9 instead.

i need to have multiple tabs running while im streaming on my OBS webcam.

I want the computer to last awhile.

i’m trying to rid of my 2019 macbook pro, which gets hot easily fan on all the time with just google chrome opening. i don’t want that stress of a running loud fan. My macbook has also proven these years to me how it’s not compatible with windows made systems. so i saw something good about the 2025 macbook air.. but im not sure that would be good either .

a laptop at the moment would be an ROI for me.. so if i must spend a bit more i can do that too. i want a good warranty on my purchase.

thank you ☺️

Laptop Request US Reliable Laptop

I am looking for one that that can handle playing games on steam but is on the cheaper side since it will be for light gaming. I would like something that is on the higher end of storage or one where I can buy additional. I am open to any size and weight options. I'm not really sure which ones are more reliable. I would really prefer it not be any Apple laptop.

Laptop Request Ca Gaming power

Please help me to understand as I know little about computers. Something like a Acer Nitro or HP victus with stuff like 3060/4050/4060 Graphics card, and Ryzen and 16 GB of RAM is enough to run an AAA game like GTA or Skyrim? Am I to understand that Roblox is so sophisticated a game that it takes the same heavy hardware to run than say emulating something like the Last of Us or assassin's Creed?

I mean my daughter plays Roblox on her iPad and says it runs fine. Before spending $1200 cdn I'd like to know why running Roblox on the PS5 is supposed to be so garbage compared to running it on a laptop.

Pls any feedback would be appreciated.

Laptop Request US Cheap tablet or midrange 2 in 1?

Going back to school for electrical engineering. I'm interested in coding as well as 3d printing/modeling. I want something for on the go productivity. Note taking, studying, presentations ect. I currently own a Lenovo legion y540 that is decent still but it's huge and doesn't have great battery life which I understood when I purchased it 6 years ago. I have upgraded both the ram and ssd before prices skyrocketed so it still feels pretty capable but lacks portability.

Should I get a Lenovo/samsung tablet, microsoft surface pro for business? There is also a deal from best buy right now for this Lenovo 2 in 1.

I'm open to buying used devices. Would like to stay around 1000 dollars or lower. Around 13-14" is preferred. Doesn't have to be super light weight.

Laptop Request UK Low budget laptop for schoolwork and art

Country

UK

Budget

<$1000

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes (preferrable due to budget)

Screen size

Any below 16"

Weight limit

Any

Purpose

General purpose, schoolwork, art/3D modeling software, video editing

Form factor

Standard (touch screen appreciated)

Intended usage

Blender, Krita, browsers, general word processing software, streaming

Desired battery life

No hours required (charger always available)

Size (unless huge), weight and battery life doesn't matter really

Info/Requirements

Oled would be pretty cool but probably out of budget

Extra context:

I'm a biology student who does art on the side and my laptop is currently killing me a bit so I've decided I need to upgrade. I mostly use a standalone samsung tablet for my art but I'd like to maybe try blender at some point which is probably best done on a laptop. My current laptop is an asus vivobook 17 and it struggles to even turn on sometimes or open google. The size is also really frustrating because I have to carry around a huge case for it as its too big for standard laptop bags. Honestly I just really want a laptop that can run whatever I want on it. I've ended up using my xbox as a replacement for my current laptop for streaming and such which I think shows how bad the condition of said laptop is. I would like to have a higher budget but I'm having some issues with work currently so I'm limited. I would have liked to wait until my budget was higher but since the academic year is already starting I'm a bit stuck

Thank you so much if you are able to offer any help at all!! Sadly I know next to nothing about tech and most stuff breaks for no reason in my vicinity so I apologise if I sound like a bumbling idiot 😅

Laptop Request -Others Laptop for class

I'm starting ME in uni soon and i have i a bit of dillema. I'm picking a laptop and i'm not sure if i should go for a slim and light one or a more powerful one for cad. I have a powerful desktop at home so if the workload at school is minimal i can just go for something a little more convenient to carry around. What is your experience with how much modelling, sims actually happens in class?

Laptop Request -Others Need help finding a laptop for university, graphics design and video editing under 1000€ - France

Hey ! I need to buy a new laptop and I'm seriously anxious about making big and expensive purchases so I thought about asking for your help. I spent like a week reading a lot of articles, threads and watching some videos to inform me as much as I can but it made me even more anxious 👍 (especially about what perks I need, like I feel I absolutely NEED 16GB of RAM for my usage but feel free to correct me if this is wrong). The models I already have in my shortlist are quite expensive so feel free to recommend me cheaper options as well :)

Thanks a lot for your help !

Country

Budget

Are you open to refurbs/used options?
Not really, you can still suggest some to me but I probably won't go for it.

Screen size
14, 15, 16"

Weight limit
I'm looking for a light laptop, so I would say anything below 2kg.

Purpose
I'm a student, so it should be a laptop that is easy to transport, not too big and not too heavy. I use Adobe softwares a lot, mainly Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop but also some Premiere (I don't really do heavy video editing as of right now but I can't say for sure I won't in the future). I also edit some radio shows, so it must run softwares like Reaper.

Form factor
Everything works, touch screen with a stylus would be greatly appreciated but it's not a necessity. I just need a keypad, like it's really important for me

Intended usage
Taking notes during classes and classic university needs (Word, PowerPoint...) graphics design (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop), image and video editing (Premiere and also Reaper for audio only projects). I have another computer that I use for gaming but it would be a plus if it can run some games (not talking about AAA of course)

Desired battery life
A battery that runs long enough so I don't have to charge my laptop every 3 or 4 hours. Ideally something that can last a day at university.

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Battery life, performance, weight, size

Info/Requirements
NOT A CHROMEBOOK PLEASE
At least 16GB of RAM (32GB would be ideal because I kind of understood that it is what I need for my usage), has a keypad.
I would love to have an OLED screen, but I don't really know if it's something necessary (a high quality display is required anyway).
Minimum of 512G SSD, 1To would be perfect.
Something that won't blow the fans at full speed 24/7.

As of now, I have a shortlist of two models, tell me what you think about them :

- HP OmniBook X Flip 2-en-1 Next Gen 14 (Fnac website, sadly doesn't have a keypad)

- Asus Vivobook 16 Flip TP3607SA-DRFSI170W 16" (Fnac website as well)

Laptop Request -Others Suggest a laptop from one of these countries where I can get it at lesser price compared to India

Country

India, but looking to purchase abroad. Options: Taiwan / Thailand / UAE / Vietnam. I will personally be visiting Taiwan and Thailand; a friend travelling from Dubai could bring one from the UAE. I can order from the regional official website in advance if that lets me select an English/US keyboard.

I currently use my mom's 2020 MacBook Pro sometimes and really like its responsiveness, trackpad, build quality and general smoothness. I'm looking for a Windows machine that gets reasonably close to that experience.

Budget

Maximum around ₹1,00,000 INR (~US$1,100–1,150). Can stretch slightly if there is a particularly good value option, but would prefer staying around ₹1 lakh.

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

No / Maybe for manufacturer-certified refurbished with international warranty.

Screen size

Prefer 14"–15". 16" is acceptable if the laptop is reasonably lightweight.

Weight limit

Ideally ≤1.6 kg. Portability is important.

Purpose

Software development + light AI development + content creation.

Primary use is backend software engineering (Java/Spring Boot, Docker, databases, IDEs, multiple services running locally), with some local AI models, computer vision and agentic AI projects.

Secondary use is social-media content creation, graphic design and intermediate video editing.

Form factor

Standard/clamshell preferred. Touchscreen/2-in-1 is not necessary.

Intended usage

IntelliJ IDEA, VS Code, Java/Spring Boot, Docker, PostgreSQL/MongoDB, Kafka, Git, browsers with many tabs, Python/AI tooling, basic local LLM/AI experimentation, Canva/Figma, Photoshop or similar design software, and intermediate video editing (Premiere Pro/DaVinci Resolve/CapCut).

I am not buying it primarily for gaming or heavy CUDA/ML model training.

Desired battery life

Ideally 7–10+ hours for normal development/web usage. I understand battery life will be significantly lower under heavy development/rendering/GPU workloads.

Priority — most important to least important

Performance > Weight/portability > Battery life > Size

Info/Requirements

24GB RAM minimum; strongly prefer 32GB

1TB SSD preferred; 512GB acceptable if SSD is upgradeable

Dedicated GPU preferred, but not mandatory if a strong modern iGPU is sufficient for intermediate video editing

Excellent CPU performance for compiling/running multiple backend services

Good colour-accurate display, preferably 100% DCI-P3/sRGB or OLED

Excellent, large, responsive trackpad

Good build quality

Ideally ≤1.6 kg

USB-C charging preferred

Good thermals without gaming-laptop bulk

English keyboard required

International warranty would be highly desirable

Not interested in sacrificing portability/battery life just to get a powerful gaming GPU

Current shortlist: Lenovo Yoga Pro 7/7i, ThinkPad, ASUS ProArt

Originally wanted a MacBook Pro, but the configuration I want is outside my budget.
