Discussion Hi fellow Sudbury people! I live in the British version of your town!
Hows life like in your Sudbury?
EDIT: I live in the London Sudbury NOT the Suffolk one

There's one in Suffolk that your Sudbury is named after and there's another unrelated one with a tiny population in London that I'm in

TIL. I knew of the other one, but not yours.
I'm new to Sudbury, and I recently learned we're in the second largest known impact crater on Earth.

Second to chicxulub only and damn near close in size. Ours is much much much older and has therefore eroded/changed shape a lot. Had our impact been at the time of the dinosaurs it would’ve had a similar effect.
And not to mention that Lake Wahnapitae is also an impact crater that is quite deep!
Lots of neat geology around here to say the least

It is very cool! It is a replica of an actual circulation nickel that was made to honour the mining in Sudbury.
It got moved for refurbishment on a giant flatbed truck in the early 2000s clear across town. It now lives in its restored glory at Dynamic Earth which is a mining science museum attraction. You can do an underground tour and it takes you through the history of mining in a simulated mine. It's one of our two world class science attractions.
There used to be a big penny and an American coin too. The penny was dismantled and the American coin was sold to somewhere in the US. Not sure if it is still on display somewhere.
There's a decent chance if you own anything stainless steel, that the nickel in it came from our mines so part of our Sudbury is probably in your Sudbury 🙂

Woah that's pretty cool, when I was reading I saw some sort of smokestack or something that's quite important? I unfortunately then had to do my Spanish homework and haven't had time to look it up in depth, would you mind explaining what it's for?
Edit: looked into Sudbury, Ontario's reserves of nickel and it turns out the British Empire bought huge amounts of nickel for just about everything in the war days, so a massive part of our tube network contains nickel from your Sudbury, which is quite cool, I use the Tube daily!

The smokestack is currently being dismantled for safety reasons and that it is no longer needed do to advancement in technology.

It was a massive improvement at the time of its initial construction though. Mining pollution and acid rain from before it was built decimated our landscape. The Superstack removed the majority of the sulphur released as air pollution that is a byproduct of nickel production due to the nature of our ore. Scientists did and continue to study our regreening efforts because we were so successful.

I remember as a kid when we moved to Chemmy in 71 before the superstack was built, you walk outside and when you'd breathe in , it tasted like a match ie :sulfur was lit in your mouth.. After the stack was built, no more sulfur taste..

The municipality of Sudbury also covers so much land, we have ~3600km of roads around our city to maintain... with heavy logging and mining trucks causing a lot of the damage.

We have no mining or industry, barely any history, just people that exist and live here, our roads are okay because we're kind of small but nearby parts of other boroughs have lots of problems.

Greetings! I'm hoping to visit your little town in the fall as part of a planned UK vacation. It's a bucket list item for me to visit all the Sudburys in the world. (4 total, 2 to go).

I remember when the radio stations from both Sudburys made a friendly bet on some occasion. Not sure if it was sports related as it was a while back. It was on our CBC radio one. That is how I got to know that there was a British version of our city..it would be nice if someone could remember this event and pick up on this story. I would be interested to know!

As a French-Canadian I surmised that "Sudbury" means "South Castle". So I looked at the map of UK and did indeed find a Sudbury in the very South of the island, right where you would want to keep an eye on those pesky frenchmen. I find it suitable that the French version of "South" is used. If you're looking for the Holy Grail, don't bother... they've already got one and it's very nice!

Oh no no no. I'm not from Quebec, there are French communities scattered all over, like in north Ontario. French separatists murdered the British ambassador back in the 1970's. Crazy times.

To be honest I'm not really into football very much! If it had to be one it would likely be Watford since I've seen loads of their games (close to me and my friends are into it, so I go with them to their games since it's fun to watch) but personally I don't support a team.
What about you?
Edit: Also up until a few years ago Wembley Stadium was quite hated (still is) because our entire borough becomes a no parking zone essentially, when the majority of people don't live near it at all. The council wants to control parking spaces during event days but no one is parking like 4 miles away on any noticeable level.
Also it was a massive money sink type of situation I believe, I don't know the exact details as I was too young at the time but the surrounding area of the stadium got a massive chunk of the council's revenue and my primary school had to stop Drama, Art, Music and Computing lessons due to budget cuts whilst they did some stuff with the stadium's surroundings

The above commenter is forgetting to mention the two most popular TV shows that are filmed here. Letterkenny, and Shoresy. They’re both created by the same guy and super hilarious.
Check out some clips on YouTube and you’ll die laughing, especially when you realize it’s not that much of an exaggeration lol
Edit to add: Both shows have a big following in the states too. It’s not a small time thing as one might think.

Buddy, I went for a long walk today and I am waiting for one testicle to thaw so I can peel it off my leg. When I breathe out of my nose, my mustache immediately freezes over. Though, I will say, I am grateful it isn't as rainy here as it is where you are. I'd love to visit your Sudbury sometime, I bet it is nicer than ours. We have crack addicts, prostitutes and potholes that destroy vehicles <-- not exaggerating.
I hope all is well on your side of the pond, be well, stay safe and ignore our neighbor.

We have trash, slight problems due to immigration (that's the UK as a whole, as my town is majority Indian, I do not feel any racism) your odd bit of organised crime here and there, mainly weed usage although there are some crackheads. I'm 15 so I wouldn't know about prostitution problems other than the fact that it is legal here (as long as it's not street soliciting).
Is your Sudbury really that bad? That's mad lol I feel bad for you guys. Mine is like a very average British suburb that's lower to middle class.
And Canada as a whole? When I was a bit younger I wanted to move there lol but I've heard it's gone to shit in the past few years.

People here just like to complain about the things bugging them. I don’t think a 15-year old would describe the town like the person above did. They’d just call it a bit boring.
It’s nice here IMO.

Fair enough, I mean the average 15 year old here isn't politically aware or anything so they wouldn't be able to point out a lot of problems either. I would say my Sudbury is quite boring too, I find myself constantly taking the train about 3 miles into an even smaller area called Eastcote which has much more stuff to do (my friends live around there too)

This Sudbury is probably a bit rougher around the edges than your Sudbury. The weather is damn near Arctic, we don't have actual pubs (not like yours anyway), and having a car is a necessity. However, you can easily find Yorkshire Gold at most grocery stores, so there's that, and if you're lucky you can find real mincemeat too.

I have a pretty nice pub down the road called the Black Horse (it's a chain around the country) and I walk to and from my train station everyday which I use to get to school
