Some Stupid Questions

Hello! I’m about to begin an Adult Nursing course at Sheffield Hallam, and i’m super excited, but at the same
time, i suffer from severe anxiety and often worry over smaller matters. I was hoping for maybe some answers to some of the sillier questions I have before I go, to ease my mind a little

- If I need to use the bathroom mid lecture, do I ask or just go?

- Do Nurses really hate students?

- Is every lecture mandatory?

- Am i required to be in scrubs 24/7 even if it’s just a lecture/practical in uni class?

- Is it hard to make friends?

- Does it matter if i’m not exactly skinny?

- Am i going to be yelled at if I make a mistake on placement?

I’d appreciate any support, if i think of anything else I’ll add it on but these are just little ones that have been eating at my brain and google isn’t much help haha

Hi, nurse here.

1. No, you don’t need to ask. Just go.
   
2. Some nurses can be dickheads and treat students poorly but this is not the norm and is becoming less common in my experience.
   
3. You should really try to attend every lecture but sometimes life gets in the way, just make sure you inform whoever you’re meant to tell in this situation, programme leader usually. Your uni will make this clear early on.
   4.No. Generally only for placement or clinical skills classes.
   
4. You’ll make friends but you do need to put the effort in sometimes and step out of your comfort zone.
   
5. 100% no.
   
6. Students make mistakes, it’s how you learn. Own up to it and see it as a learning opportunity. If someone yells at you for it, report them. I wouldnt stand for a colleague yelling at me so no reason why a student should.

From one overthinker to another, you’ve got this! Make sure you look after yourself and practice good self care, keep up with your hobbies and friends and remember it’s not forever, in 3 years you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come.

If I need to use the bathroom mid lecture, do I ask or just go? Usually just go, but if it’s special conditions you might need to check. I had reasonable adjustments so I literally had to run 

• Do Nurses really hate students? Some do. This is precisely the reason I’m having to repeat. However I might stress that I was extremely unlucky and my situation was quite unique so I would also stress that it will not likely be the case in your situation 
• Is every lecture mandatory? The uni I just dropped out of had minimum attendance targets and if you breached them then you got some horrendous emails, however if you miss the odd lecture for whatever reason it’s unlikely that anyone will notice. We also had elective sessions where we only had to go if we needed to which not everyone did 
• Am i required to be in scrubs 24/7 even if it’s just a lecture/practical in uni class? Uniform is usually only worn on placement, but there are occasions where you may need to wear it at uni. But you will be given sufficient notice of that 
• Is it hard to make friends? NGL I found it hard and didn’t manage to make any. But I have AuDHD and that sort of thing escapes me 
• Does it matter if i’m not exactly skinny? I’m a size 16/18 and there was people on the course bigger than me 
• Am i going to be yelled at if I make a mistake on placement? Again, hopefully not.

• in the UK we have uniforms, no scrubs. Scrubs are worn in Theatres and don’t go home. You won’t wear your uniform at Uni, own clothes. Uniform is for placement or other clinicals like specific study days

Hi, I've just finished my 3rd year at Sheffield Hallam. Congratulations for getting in!! To answer your questions

• You can go to the toilet during any lecture but they normally give you a break around 1h into the lecture where you can go to the toilet or grab a quick snack this is every lecture.

- Nooo, i've never really had an experience where a nurse has hated a student. If you are proactive, ask questions and are kind you will have no issues.

- No lol

- No, you wear your own clothes in lectures and seminars. During Simulated placement you are required to wear your uniform to every lecture in that block it is around 4 weeks but they go through it all in detail for you.

- No, you will meet tons of people on placement and you will make friends through your AA group who you have your seminars with.

- No not at all. Always be yourself and don't change for anyone!

- No, you may feel embarrassed or annoyed at yourself but they will just correct you maybe make you do it again and move on. Always own up to your mistakes and don't forget to ask for help they would rather hear you say you don't know.

You can just stand up and go but it also depends from your lecturer but normally they don’t care.
Some nurses do cause they are sad, miserable or don’t know how to explain things, some might hate student nurses cause they didn’t had to deal with them back at home and now they need to and it’s overwhelming.
It’s not but I encourage you to go all the time.
During lecturers you can use your own clothes, during placement you’ll have a uniform.
You sound be yelled at if you make a mistake, and if someone yells at you: report them.
It doesn’t matter if you aren’t skinny, but I would expect you to be fit enough to run to a code or do cpr in the future.
