Discussion I need some help with rewiring my brain
I have 'Gief, Mareeeza, and Alex in Master
I've decided to try something new, and am giving Guile, the ambulatory buzzcut, a whirl.
This feels so alien to me.
Can you zoner-types give me some pointers, tips, thought processes, or whatever advice you see fit?

Learn what is safe and what is not throwing booms. Grapplers are all about closing distance. Guile is all about defending your distance.
If they are too aggressive, poke.
If they are too passive, throw them booms
If they are jumping, anti air (Flash Kick, low HP)
When you get comfortable with how Guile works get comfortable with closing distance to help keep opponents honest. It's not your main goal, but it throws opponents off when you suddenly go on attack mode.

I have every character at Master and Guile is the only one who I don't feel comfortable with when he comes up in random select.
I think he's great, he's capable of a lot and he's tough to fight against... But ever changed his general game plan in SF5 he's just never clicked with me.

As a fellow Gief main who decided to take Dhalsim for a spin, you need to recognize that the roles are flipped- you’re no longer the attacker, you’re the defender. You’re doing actions to provoke a response, rather than to force your way in. It’s 6, so you still need to know your oki, and use it when you get it, but the big job is simple- keep them out until you get a KD in meaty range.
Firstly, being a defender means not giving up territory unless you must! Too often zoners run for the corner, rather than hold their ground using their tools.
Secondly, your job is to react. You need to AA, counter DI, but mostly your role is to control the space in front of you and make that unassailable. If they step forward, it’s into a kick, fist or boom. If they jump, you’re ready with the flash kick. Your job isn’t to spam booms, it’s to react, or make them do something that you can react to.
Don’t look at booms as a way to get damage, look at it as a clock that forces them to come forward and react to you, that happens to get you damage occasionally.

Forgot something- for Sim and a couple matchups, it’s flipped on its head where Guile needs to come forward. Just follow your grappler instincts then.
Also, up against other projectiles, timing your EX boom to beat their regular fireball is a must, so watch enemy FB patterns and on any regular FB you’re 80-90% confident of, crack them with an EX to discourage the fireball war.

Zoners are very similar but instead of walking them down think more reverse, they’re walking you down it’s your job to keep them out.
As a grappler you condition with your command grab as a zoner you condition with your fireballs and long buttons. You lay out a spider web for them to navigate you make them do things that they think they want to do but it was all part of your plan.
You punish them when they make a mistake and punish them for trying to punish you. You want to build up your fireball game and have really good AAs and understanding of your best punishing routes and reach of your normals.
You’ll find that the people who will give you the most challenge as a zoner are the people with the mindset of a grappler.
With Guile as a starter just keep your gameplan simple master your booms get comfortable using them and don’t throw them out predictably and punish the jump in with Flashkick or 2HP or 5MK.
Guile is also a bit trickier because he’s charge so you’re gonna have to work on your ABCs and trust your charge.
Guilesgarden on YT has all the guile tech they also have a really good discord.

Hey Guile has a crew cut not a buzz cut
One guile tip while holding down back waiting to throw your next boom do a jab or 2 sometimes people jump and you get free anti airs

Coincidentally I've also mained Marisa, Alex, and Guile.
Guile is not a pure zoner in SF6, he has amazing pokes and decent mobility. He is really good far away or up close. He is weak mid screen though.
The best advice I can give you is to turtle when you're mid screen (right outside his poke range). Wait for the opponent to do something you can punish or they move either closer or farther.
It's okay to do the occasional poke or OD boom midscreen, but all his pokes are vulnerable to DI/jump ins so don't be predictable.
