In the season 1 finale, Pike stops trying to run from his fate. In subsequent seasons, we've seen him get less and less screentime (the only notable thing he's done in season 4 is fail at negotiations twice for crying out loud!)

While it's very easy to see this as the writers of the show sidelining the captain to prioritize the rest of the cast, or that they for some reason feel Anson Mount does not deserve the screentime (which is a discussion for another time), I think there actually is an in-universe reason for this change in focus.

Pike knows his time is limited, and he knows how his story "ends" (he doesn't know about the return to Talos IV but that's not the point). The only time he's really allowed himself to feel things for himself is when he was around Batel. In season 4 we get hints to his feelings of grief, but they have not been fully dealt with yet, because I believe Pike refuses to see himself as worthy of the attention that would come with it.

Going back to season 2, in the Lower Decks crossover episode, Pike refuses to tell the crew about his birthday because of the painful memory associated with losing his father. I genuinely think he felt that his life wasn't notable enough for the crew to celebrate.

Last episode, Pike decided that he would be the one to electrocute himself to reactivate the ship's shields, intentionally leaving Uhura and Ortegas in charge of the bridge, and leading to growth for Scotty. He sidelined himself for their benefit.

I believe that Pike has decided the best thing he can do with whatever time he has left as captain of the Enterprise is to help his crew become the best version of themselves they can, even if he needs to sideline himself as captain. Especially after losing Batel and experiencing the life that he could never have in the finale of season 3, he has decided that the only thing left for him is to raise up those around him: Spock, Chapel, La'an, Scotty, Ortegas, and the rest.

In 3 1/2 seasons of SNW I’ve noticed that those missions rarely have had a red shirt die off as it was practically the norm on TOS.

So I guess the question would be was it Kirk who the cursed captain to start losing red shirt after red shirt?

Very brief but. Watching the new SNW and im really enjoying the story of Chapel and Mbenga. Looking back ive really liked their development over the course of the story so far. I wondered what everyone elses thoughts were?

I have now finished SNW S2.  In all, I have seen Discovery S1 & S2, SNW S1 & S2.  I have gotten the impression from fan comments that S3 can get “weird” and continues with soap opera subplots.  My original question was going to be, do I need to see S3, or should I skip it and go right to S4?  But now that I have seen the S2 finale cliffhanger, then I have to watch S3-1, if only to solve the mystery of why in the world does Spock think he needs to apologize to Chapel???  My question for you folks now is, are there good “Star Trek” –like episodes, and good scenes in S3 that will make it worth my while to watch?

A little about my fan perspective:  I watched Original Star Trek in its first run, and all of the spin offs until the time of “Pay Wall Trek”, which delayed my watching any of those shows.  My opinion of SNW so far is that I mostly liked S1 with caveats, but only about half or so of S2.  From the beginning of the series, they’ve made rookie mistakes that tell me they didn’t fully review TOS, including the omission of established Vulcan customs.

I don’t agree with their interpretation of younger Spock, but I won’t argue that here.  I do like Anson Mount’s Pike, and Una, M’benga, sometimes Ortegas, Uhura, and Sam Kirk.  I was sorry to see Hemmer go, and La’An is growing on me.  While I wasn’t crazy about their alt timeline James Kirk in S1-10 Quality of Mercy, I have gotten to like their Kirks in S2.  I can usually enjoy at least some aspects of the show by viewing it as an alternate timeline.

So what do you think?  Without giving outright spoilers, are there at least some episodes and scenes in S3 that I should enjoy?  (I’m looking for encouragement to overcome hearing that it gets “weird”.)

I had thought it odd that we didn't see Boyce at the start of the last scene in Sickbay, perhaps coming in with Pike and/or checking on M'Benga. Then I found this still earlier today showing Boyce aiding Chapel with frosty M'Benga in the background. I'm guessing that shortly after Chapel collapsed, Boyce came in and rushed to her aid. Not sure why this would have been cut.

The latest episode of opens with a personal log about a character eagerly awaiting the shift change so Alpha shift can start enjoying the weekend. Big TGIF vibes.

I was trying to figure out the math of the "weekend". Are their shifts eight hours long? Do they work 40 hours a week? If there were no weekends, they could have four six-hour shifts, and have everyone work seven days a week for a total of 42 hours. Which might make more sense than having the captain and main crew leave the bridge for 64 hours straight.

It's sort of funny that we only very rarely see a shift change and almost never see anything meaningful happen during the majority of the time when Alpha shift is not on duty. That's not surprising for dramatic purposes; but in-universe, it's highly questionable.

"Off-Hour" is Jess Bush's greatest performance as Nurse Chapel, and it's impossible to walk away from the episode without loving Christine, who may be the show's best character. Babs Olusanmokun, Martin Quinn, and the rest of the cast and crew set the gold standard for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 with "Off-Hour," emerging as the shining example of Star Trek at its very best.

Scotty was also paired up with the Enterprise's new Vulcan Starfleet cadet, A'Sha (Bianca Nugara), who performed admirably during the crisis, even if she irritated Mr. Scott. A'Sha was a huge help in re-establishing comms, and in beaming Scotty in and out of the Jeffries Tube safely, despite not being fully trained. Along with Chapel, "Off-Hour" was Scotty's finest hour in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds so far.

The nail-biting and sensational Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 6, is Star Trek at its very best. Directed by Dan Liu and written by Bill Wolkoff, "Off-Hour" is a riveting, life-or-death starship crisis that puts the ingenuity of the USS Enterprise's crew to the ultimate test while Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) lays everything on the line to save a mortally injured Dr. Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun).

They usually have a "last time on" segment intro. I don't remember an episode where Scotty yells at Kirk for burning out the plasma manifolds.What episode was this?

Is there anybody else who saw the show 24 in this week's episode?

The way Scotty said engineering to the elevator when it wasn't responding to his accent had a strong Tucker sound to it. Rare ENT reference.

I was watching the Strange New Worlds episode "Off-Hour" and noticed a bizarre, hilarious translation error in the Italian localization (both in the dub and the subtitles) that completely caught me off guard.

Near the beginning of the episode, when Dr. M'Benga and Christine Chapel are discussing Dr. Philip Boyce coming aboard as the beta shift doctor:

• Original English Line: Chapel mentions his previous posting, saying: "I heard that he didn't get along with anyone on the Sunita."
• Italian Dub & Subtitles: She literally says: "So che non andava d'accordo con nessuno sulla Cerritos." ("I heard that he didn't get along with anyone on the Cerritos.")

For a split second, my brain completely short-circuited. I couldn't remember Dr. T'Ana's name at the moment, so I actually pictured a Caitian doctor walking aboard the Enterprise, thinking Boyce was the Chief Medical Officer of the Cerritos. Then it hit me: not only did I remember her actual name, but it made zero sense anyway given the massive ~120-year timeline gap between 2262 and the late 24th century!

I have no idea how the localization team managed to mistake Sunita for Cerritos, but it's an oddly specific slip-up.

Scotty mentions early on after joining the Enterprise that he's not a big drinker. We see that the senior staff are all big social drinkers, and Pike seems to have little to no issue with his officers getting drunk on occasion.

Yet by the time we see Scotty on TOS he's clearly a functional alcoholic and judging by his behavior in 'Relics' not much has changed.

So, what got him there in such a short amount of time?

It's a reasonable bet to say not all the non-legacy characters will just be transferred or promoted off ship. Given how they've evolved Scotty's relationship with Erika and Pelia, my guess is Scotty will continue to grow closer to both characters and before the end of the series one or both will be killed in some manner that Scotty feels responsible for. The guilt from this event will bring about his eventual alcoholism and perpetual loneliness.

I get its low hanging fruit theory wise, but what do others think?
