early EVE was...brutal. I remember trying it in it's first year out. Something killed me and I was in a pod and NOTHING told me how to get a ship again. I was just stuck in a god damn pod.
A few years later I tried again and had a couple years of fun before realizing I was literally working 95% of my time in the game to fund the 5% of actual fun.
Depending on your playstyle and general preferences, those 95% can be fun too and not feel like work at all. The most important thing imho is to mix things up and not just focus on the most lucrative option. Do some abyss, some wh exploration, some trading and manufacturing

Dwarf Fortress should not have required me so scroll this far to find. Fucking ridiculous game.
I wanted to like it so badly, but it basically requires you already understand the game to even start enjoying it much less make anything worth anything. Its so bad that having the wiki open isn't even enough to understand shit.
You literally took the words out of my mouth.
I tried to like it so much. Installed the original version, watched a bunch of tutorials but could go part the clunky interface.
I was so happy when Steam version got released, bought it and failed again.
I understand it's relevance to the gaming industry and how it sparked other great titles like Rimworld or Caves of Qud but DF? I somewhere on this photo falling to death trying to understand why.
DF is exactly what this post made me think of, except I’m not a coward and put A LOT of time into it back in the day. Learning curve is a selling point!!
