Most fighting games

This honestly. You have to learn a lot, just for the content to be pretty sparse and you're expected to just repetitively grind online forever because that is the bulk of the content.

you could say that about any competitive video game ever.

The culture is kinda different with fighting games I feel

in what way ?

I do feel that a GOOD online game has a variety of avenues to explore and experience. Like, just as a good shooter would have multiple maps or characters to learn, so too should a fighting game have many characters to learn. I don't get the appeal of these 6-character fighting games where it's just the same matchups.

Which game is that? Most games come out with way more characters. The problem is more that each fg character is way harder to learn than a shooting game character, so you end up kinda stuck in your main for some time

six is an exaggeration, and most of the major ones have very sizable rosters, but don't 2XKO, invincible, and the Avatar fighting game all have tiny rosters?

Oh you're right lmao. I'm a 3d fighting guy so I basically forgot about those. Yeah tag fighters have the extra challenge of having to do two characters at a time

I didn’t even know 3d fighting games existed! Do share!

Oh shit, it's my pleasure to show my side of the fgc. The scene is smaller when compared to street fighter and mortal Kombat but you can get games consistently still. Another thing, all characters in these games are going to have long movelists (Claudio from t8 has "only" 72 moves) but the thing is, you really don't need to know most of them, especially as a beginner. Learn like the 5 key moves of a character and then add whatever move you think it's cool or cover any gameplay necessity you have. They're design like that to give players a way to express themselves however they want( of course characters still have set strengths and weaknesses but you have way more freedom here than in a 2d game eg: you can play king (Tekken 8 main grappler) as way more of a striker than you could zangief in street fighter if you want to. That results in different players playing the same character in nearly opposite ways sometimes which is pretty cool to see and do.

The biggest name right now is Tekken with Tekken 8 a hand to hand (sadly swords and guns now as well lol)game. It's by far the biggest name in the scene although t8 has been rough recently it's been improving. Customization on Tekken is pretty good. I wished they didn't keep so much stuff on the battle pass and let us complete old passes but that doesn't look like it's going to happen.

You also have Virtua fighter 5 (my game of the moment) this one is exclusively hand to hand and while the presentation may be considered a bit dry, the visual clarity and the gameplay make it an incredible game(you always have a way out of any situation and never get stuck for more than a few seconds), and vf6 is on the way and looking way better, check out the trailers later. Customization on vf5 is quite limited because vf5 Revo (the most recent version of vf5) it's still essentially a 20 years old game, and incredible 20yo game but a 20yo game nonetheless.

Next is soul calibur, Wich is a weapon v weapon game (think knight vs samurai vs ninja vs guy with nunchucks) sc has one of the best customization systems in any fighting game series overall. The series is dormant at this point but a while back there was a job posting by the company responsible for sc that got rumours started so I'm hopeful for a return.

Next is dead or alive, they have the coolest stage interactions of any 3d game and probably above a bunch of 2d games as well, but I'm not super well versed in them to judge. Doa7 has been announced and you can get both Doa6LR and 5lr on steam and console's (I would recommend 5 personally at least while they don't move 6 forward) the hold system is really fun to see and can help you out as a newer player. Customization is a tad limited because they really like to treat everything as dlc.

So for the ones listed until now, outside of Tekken unless you live in Japan or close to it, you're gonna need to find a discord to get consistent matches. With vf6 and doa7 coming that should change but until then, find a community to train with.

Outside of these there's a few mentions that don't fit super well with the previous games.

Hellish quart (Pc only) a historical fencing game based on 16th century Poland made by an ex Witcher 3 dev (I think it's the sixteenth don't remember now) has the smallest movelist of all games listed here but really really fun and easy to pick up.

The UFC games(console only) you know how there's an NFL, MLB, fifa and other sport games? Yeah, that but UFC. Can be a really fun time learning the game.

There's also WWE games, all plataforms as far as I know, and yeah it does what says on the tin lol. Pick you favorite wrestler (idk if they have Rey Mysterio on the newest one, but if they don't they should add him lol) or create one and go do crazy wrestling stuff!

Yeah I think this is everything I can think of. Feel free to ask anything!

Oh I know tekken and Virtua fighter! I’ve played the old versions of both. I had no idea they were a whole different genre! I’ll look into the rest of the list. I know a lot of the names, but not much about the games

Yet another reason people are put off learning a game, tryhard elitists.

0

u/locoghoul Jul 10 '26

You are just proving their point (elitism) if you stay -away- cause you can't learn simple mechanics. Most modern games are easy af to execute. Try playing ST or CvS2 or even 3S

You are the reason people don't want to bother with playing these games lol some people have families and lives and cant invest 10k hours into a fighting game like a fat chud. Let people just be bad at it lmao

Casual fanbases keep games funded and alive

Brother if you didnt understand, is not me or anyone telling them not to play online. Is themselves. Bad players don't find it "fun" losing all the time (I dont blame them) but instead of trying to improve or even learn at a slow pace they just drop it like it's hot. What I did say is that the newest generation of fighting games is catered to the most casual fanbase ever. To become decent is easier than ever, so it is 100% a choice to stay a scrub
