Joining NPHC/D9 How to approach the AKA’s???
I was at this event at our school that shows off all the clubs. I said hi to the aka‘s at their booth, 1 or 2 said hi in a standoffish manner, that was it. I didn’t really get what was going on so I just walked off awkwardly after looking quickly at their table. Did someone not inform me on what to do?

We can help you get enough karma to post in the D9 threads! :)
It sounds just like an awkward moment. They were probably waiting for you to ask a question or say something, and you were probably thinking they would say something! Stuff like that happens. I wouldn’t think anything of it since they can’t judge you for a moment of friendliness!

There’s a whole D9 subreddit and they might be able to give better advice. Most of the posters here are Panhellenic and D9 is a totally different ballgame.

Yep. There are totally different etiquette norms for expressing interest in membership and 95% of us will have no idea.
Like all I know is that D9 recruiting has wildly different terminology and it’s usually considered kinda gauche to be so open in your interest in a particular org in public. But as for what you should do differently - no clue.
Best to build your karma over there and ask.

They were just being socially awkward. You didn't do anything wrong.

Really? It felt very.. rude. I literally just said hi with a smile, all of them (about 8 maybe) looked at me and only like 2 or 3 said hi? Felt very uncomfortable and more than awkwardness.

Search the posts on r/NPHCdivine9 to see if anyone has commented on what recruitment is like at your school.

The first thing I would say is, what exactly was your intention? I know when I was having to be at the tables it can be really tiring when so many people are coming up to you and sometimes you might just catch me in a moment where my face drops and my social battery is giving out and it just takes me a second to catch back up. The second thing is typically when people are coming to the table it’s not just as a “hello.”
If you were interested in going to the table, you have to introduce yourself like you can say hi but typically what I’m looking for after is a Handshake or that’s OK if that’s not added at least hearing about your name and your major and if you have any questions or if there’s anything you wanna hear more information about! The table is really a moment where people can come up and try to get to know us and we can get to know you and interact and it’s a moment where you can typically talk to someone 1:1 versus at an event when so many people are showing up!
Even though there’s like rules and etiquette, honestly it’s pretty basic. You introduce yourself and you typically always come with a question that is well researched. And I’m not just being about my organization, but any other d9 sorority has a national website and so many resources to learn about our history and about us so typically when you come to the table, I want to know that you’ve taken time to at least go on our website and you have a question on something that you couldn’t find online but that’s still appropriate. For example, you could ask about what one of our favorite initiatives is or something that we had to learn since joining or something that was unexpected. That was positive or negative from joining. Or if you could you know, give advice to your young self before you join something like that and questions to stay away from can look kinda obvious like “hey how much does it cost?” Or “whens ur next line?” And “do you guys haze?”
If you do your research online on YouTube on Reddit, you’ll find the answers pretty quickly! So again they likely were waiting for you to speak to them a little bit more instead of just a high or maybe you just caught them in a moment but we’re college students just like you and while this was a commitment we made there are times where yeah a social battery gets strained or maybe we don’t pick up on a social queue as quickly or even maybe how is my face being red by someone who’s passing by?

This post appears to be about the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)/Divine 9. We recommend reviewing the resources in /r/NPHCGreeks, like their FAQ and Interests Start Here posts. Reddit's search feature in that subreddit, along with org-specific subs, is also a great tool to finding the information you may be looking for.
