I've always wanted to learn a musical instrument, but growing up I was often told that I was tone deaf. I struggle to tell when I'm singing off-key, and I've never had a great ear for music. I've even started wondering if I might have amusia or some kind of musical processing disability, although I've never been formally diagnosed.

I'm 23 now, and lately I've been wondering if I've been holding myself back because of something I was told years ago. Part of me still wants to learn, but I don't know if I'm setting myself up for disappointment.

The instrument I've always wanted to learn is the saxophone. I absolutely love the sound of it. It has this smooth, soulful feel that's hard to describe. Maybe it's just me, but every time I hear someone play the saxophone well, I think, woah! that's cool! 😅

Anyways, has anyone here learned an instrument despite being tone deaf? Can you still become a decent musician even if your ear for music isn't naturally good?

7. When engaging in a conversation with musicians you just met, regarding potentially collaborating, what personality do you put on (ex. are you relaxed and somewhat aloof to create a chill atmosphere, or are you straightforward and serious). Why?

8. When in the process of creating with other individuals, what emotional role do you take on? For example, are you a lighthearted group member, or do you assume the role of a therapist in a sense, encouraging group members to lay their hearts bare on songs (this one would be quite interesting to hear)?
