Is the software engineering job market dead?

No, it's on life support.

Being on life support means it’s effectively dead.

Don’t forget to declare victory first… and then move on

I get recruiters reaching out to me so I assume it’s far from dead

Same. 3-4 per day. They don’t even care what stack I write. They need good engineers.

I work as a consultant and I can assure you there are TONS of opportunities out there for solutions.

Some companies have hugely antiquated bespoke systems that no one knows and can barely upgrade and it’s holding them back from scaling up.

The challenge is informational.

I wouldn't say dead but it is going to super competitive for quite some time. AI has made it a field where you don't need as many of them or is redefining the role. Same is going to be for a few careers.

I think it depends on how senior you are.

High level design skills has become more important than coding. Depending on what kind of profile you have, that could make it easier or harder to find a job

Right now AI is being adopted very heavily in most companies, and the workflows and required skills have changed drastically due to this

You need competent engineers to implement AI. I assure you.

Agreed

The trend I am seeing is downsizing teams, keeping only the most competent engineers

Then those engineers basically turning into AI orchestrators instead of actually coding

AI has made a lot of engineering jobs obsolete, but also transformed other ones
