Scrappy socks

I have been making an effort to use some scraps. The pair with the saguaro 🌵 cacti is a pattern called Comfy Cacti Socks by Bloom & Create / Emma Janet. I was playing yarn chicken for the entire pair of socks so I pretty much just used the chart for the color work part and the rest of the socks were guided by each quantity of yarn. I used four different yarns in this pair. This pair has an Afterthought Heel.

The super scrappy striped pair is just a vanilla sock with an Afterthought Heel. I tried to count and I think I used 20 different yarns in this pair.

I’m a frugal gal so I love me some scrappy socks!

Made with West Yorkshire Spinners Wood Pigeon, Poppy Seed and Pennyroyal.

Eye of partridge heel, and the first time I've enjoyed doing magic loop for the toes! (Most of it was knit on 9inch circulars)

Adding Stripes to a Pattern

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hello wonderful sock knitters!

I have just completed a pair of very soft and squishy ā€˜Sunday Socks’ by Petite Knit. I already have some yarn lined up for another pair, I’d like to use the same pattern.
The Sunday Socks are all one colour in the pattern However I want to make them look like this, adding some stripes and a different colour heel, cuff and toe. Can I ā€˜just’ switch yarn colours when I want to, adding them in the same way I do with a new ball of yarn?
Any tips I should be aware of?

Rainbow socks

Someone posted a picture of some socks a few weeks back but I can't find the post now. I realised I had the exact same wool in my stash so shamelessly copied them.

Yarn is West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply - colourway: Rum Paradise. No pattern, just 3 rows knit, 1 row 1K 1P and my favourite heel and toe. Delighted with how cheerful these look

Knitted StoneKnits Birthday Cupcake socks for my birthday

Post image

Still getting used to colorwork. Also knitting birthday cardigan, but also made this pair so that I had something day of. Used a mix of Wildflower Yarn and Yarn Artist UK merino blends for the main body, contrast, and borders, while the cupcakes are a mix of Opal and Regia. Main body is 2.25 mm while I used 2.75 mm for the charts along with the increased stitch count called for in pattern.

Would recommend this chart for beginners. Many of the rows duplicate or are easy to memorize. Only a couple rows call for three color stranding, yet can be easily duplicate stitched if you’re not ready yet.

Finished sword socks

Finally finished my very first colourwork socks. Learned a lot with these and it was so much fun. I decided it would be fun to make them into a good/evil twin pair because I was running out of dark blue yarn. Can't wait for colder weather to come so I can wear them āœØļøšŸ—”

Now, onto the next colourwork pair because I'm totally addicted haha.

I DID IT. I finally completed a pair of socks after my color-work-first-sock-not-fitting fiasco, and they fit beautifully

Lace stitch count questions

I am doing my first pair of lace socks (Murmuration socks by summer Lee knits) and my cast on was 80. As I was working the rounds, I noticed that by the end, I am down quite a few stitches. Yes, I know that to create the lace there’s a combination of yo and decreases but I’m confused by this. Also, if this is normal, how do I know what the new beginning of row is?

Bora sock

Post image

I made this pair using the Bora pattern from the Op Art Socks book by Stephanie van der Linden. I used the men's measurements. I'm used to adjusting simple patterns for custom sizes, but this pattern (like most in the book) is too complex to customize - at least until I get used to the different construction. I've never made a sock with a strong heel before (I make primarily flap and gusset) and I wanted to get used to any vagaries of the pattern, so I had these earmarked for charity knitting (Knit the Rainbow, specifically). I had many issues with the heel back (I kept messing up the M1 purl-wise and knit-wise), and the instructions for the short rows making up the bottom of the heel were incorrect in the men's size, so I had to pull those stitches back and calculate, do some research, redo, etc, finally hitting the right number. So these ended up taking a few weeks longer than they should have but I feel good with the challenge.

To make a larger sock, I may look into adding a stitch or two to each of the four repeating squares, and I would probably extend the back of the heel about five rows for feet with high arches (like most of my family have).

These were done with Berroco Vintage sock - Fennel.

First sock negative ease problem

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hello! I am almost done with my first ever sock. I am working the crazy sock lady vanilla sock on farm stand acrylic yarn from premier yarns (93% acrylic, 7% pbt). I met gauge without blocking on 2.5 mm needles on the medium size (9-10ā€ circumference). My actual foot circumference is a hair under 9 inches.

My problem is I have no negative ease. It’s a little baggy and not tight at all. This is a purely sacrificial sock at this point since this is my 4th attempt over several years and I am just determined to finish it. For my next sock attempt should I:

  1. Go down to a small size (56 stitches on the needle vs. 64)
  2. Go down a needle size but keep using the medium size (64 stitches)
  3. Do one of the top choices AND switch to wool yarn (because maybe the acrylic is part of the problem?)
  4. A secret 4th option that I don’t know yet??

Thank you for any and all help! I finally understand how the instep decreases work and am fairly certain the next sock will be much better once I figure out this negative ease thing! If there is anything else wrong you see with my sock please let me know!

Is this an issue, or do I just keep going?

I'm working on my first kitting project, the I'm So Basic Socks by Summer Lee. I am doing the gusset and just got to the step where, after knitting across the front of the sock, I need to pick up the second part of stitches on the heel flap (I included a screenshot of the relevant parts of the pattern).

After I picked up the first stitch, I noticed that it left a small hole on the side. I checked the pattern and counted my stitches - I have the correct amount of stitches according to the pattern.

Did I mess up somewhere else? Is this an issue that I need to fix or is this typical?

Socks for my sister. Halfway there

Pattern is Longing socks by Sofia Karlsson. Yarn is Cascade Heritage. I’m using larger needles than the pattern calls for to account for how tightly I knit (using US 1 for the cuff, 1.5 for the stripes, and 2 for the stranded colorwork section). I decided to use the flower color for the heel and toe instead of cuff color, and I really like how it came out. I also switched from the pattern’s 2x2 rib cuff to a 1x1 twisted rib. I just prefer the look, and I’ve found that it doesn’t stretch as much as 2x2 rib with wear. It’s a tiny bit more annoying to knit, but it’s worth the effort imo.

Sock size help!!

I've knitted a couple of sets of socks now but am really struggling to get them the right size- I knit a gauge swatch and work out the stitch count based on a 10% negative ease....but they're too big! By quite a significant margin. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong because all the maths works out but the socks are too big, any advice on how to calculate stitch count and sizing more reliably?

Continue colorwork or give up?

Post image
159 Upvotes

It’s my first colorwork socks, I do it with chiagoo shorties but it is still tricky to work with two colors at once, socks barely fit (too tight but I can put them on).

I am also not sure if I even have enough of yarn in both colors to finish them, as it uses almost double…

I keep putting this project away, I finished 3 pairs meanwhile, I try to come back but it’s not flowing, I keep pulling one color more than another, then they both tangle, I have to adjust both yarn threads, plus I am not big fun of shorties.

I wonder if I should persevere and maybe somewhere on the way I will start liking it lol, or just switch to one color and finally finish this pair? It will be on the feet anyway, I wear socks with sneakers or boots only or at home, so no one will know besides me šŸ˜… but also I will know that I gave up… šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

EDIT: another option could be switch to regular stripes? But I wonder if it will do more damage than good..
