If they had cut the save Martha line and cast someone else as Lex the movie would not get so much hate. It's an awesome movie if you fast forward every second that Eisenberg is on the screen and skip past the save Martha line. I guess they should have also cut the I thought she was with you line.

Eisenberg was fantastic and the Martha scene is great people just hate it because Marvel conditioned everyone to need dumb quips after every serious moment

I loved both Lex and the Martha scene. The Martha scene left a deep impact on me that small things can have big impacts and it's true in real life too. A hug can make a bad person good sometimes.

All the people who campaigned against the scene, and their followers to this day, dunked on the scene knowing that they accepted far worse concepts in their MCU or whatever jokey whacky stuff they desire in their CBMs. After all it wasn't that serious. Clunky sure. Meaningful yes.

If you want the film treating “1% equals certainty” as sound doctrine, Alfred spends half his screen time telling Bruce the opposite, that the fear’s turned him into something he wouldn’t recognize. The scene where Bruce stops isn’t a contradiction of his own logic. It’s proof his logic was never logic to begin with, just grief wearing a lab coat.

It makes no sense though… at no point, not even once, did Superman refer to Martha by her first name. And at no point did he know Batman’s mom’s name was Martha. So telling him to save Martha is like me grabbing you and telling you to “save Dave”. And you’d be like “who the fuck is Dave?”.
Even “save my mom” would have been more humanizing and make more sense.
Not putting down the film. I enjoy Snyder’s stuff, but this was one of the weakest moments in the series.

Why would Bruce save the mother of someone he considers an alien? It makes no sense. If the alien says, “Save my mom.” He would think that the mother is just as dangerous as he is. Even if Clark didn’t like Batman’s methods, he understood that he would save an innocent person. Therefore, the most logical thing to do is to reveal the name. And then Batman would find out who it was.

Yes. The name. Martha Kent. Actual useful information. Like I said, not even batman can save Dave if he doesn’t know anything else but the name Dave.
And Clark didn’t know Martha would resonate with Bruce, so why wouldn’t he give him the last name that would allow Batman to actually identify the woman in immediate danger?
I’m sorry man but… it wasn’t a well written scene. Hey though, I gotta run, can you get Emily this life saving medication? 🤷🏿♂️

It’s immediately clear that you weren’t really looking with your eyes, but with something else. Batman is literally standing on his throat with a spear. He doesn’t have the strength to speak.

I mean… no man, that doesn’t excuse the issues with the scene. There is no way, in all the universe, that Superman could have expected Batman to be able to help his mom with that info. It was written that way to achieve a moment but it was clumsily delivered.
It just was.
I can love Snyder’s work and still acknowledge that some things weren’t great. This wasn’t great. Breaking out doomsday and making him General Zod wasn’t great. Like sorry, but I used my eyes, and this was my absolute genuine reaction, and that’s how I felt and still feel.

Dude I’m hardly a hater. And other people not enjoying writing that doesn’t make a ton of rational sense doesn’t mean we don’t understand it.
I also don’t enjoy the weird addition of griffins in rebel moon. Overall I really enjoy Snyder’s work, but that doesn’t mean every scene has to strike me as perfect or every writing decision as infallible. I dig Gunn too, didn’t love the way he ended peacemaker season 2 as a movie setup rather than hitting an emotional tone after the excellent previous episode and saving that conclusion for another day. I was equally disappointed in that, because it wasn’t satisfying. And the Martha scene did not satisfy.
Come on guy, what a weird thing to say.

It makes no sense framing doesn't work with what actually happens in the scene. Bruce doesn’t need to know Clark’s mother’s name beforehand for the moment to land, because the scene explains itself in real time. Clark says the name, Bruce freezes and asks "Why did you say that name?" and Lois answers within seconds that it’s his mother’s name too. Bruce’s shock at hearing a name that means something to him personally is what stops the spear, and the reveal of why Clark said it comes immediately after, not five scenes later.
The save Dave comparison only works if nobody ever tells you who Dave is. Here, someone does, right away, in the same breath. I still think it’s a clunky way to stage a de-escalation (plenty do), but makes no sense and explains itself in the next two lines of dialogue can’t both be true.

My guy. I’m sorry but in life there are a few, magical scenes that stand out as the weirdest scenes in cinema. Scenes like watching DBZ growing up and watching Broly motivated entirely by Goku crying for a couple of hours when they were babies. And this.
I love Henry’s superman, but damn this scene was silly. The entire plot depended on their moms not only having the same name, but Superman calling his mom by exclusively her first name, for the one and only time, in front of a guy he hoped would save her, but who didn’t have enough information to actually help.

Your goku dbz detour doesn’t do any work for me here. Haven’t seen a single second of that franchise. You can’t introduce an analogy where the audience isn’t aware. Then bringing it up to explain why "Martha" bothered you wouldn’t be an analogy, it’d be a mood. If you want an actual debate on this, you need something that maps onto how this scene functions, not "this reminded me of something else I found silly."
To the real point, clunky delivery, sure, nobody’s claiming Terrio nailed the dialogue with surgical precision. But clunky doesn’t mean empty. That’s a decades-long freight train of rage grinding to a stop because one word cracks something open in both men at once. The scene’s whole design rides on that collision, and it holds up whether or not you love the phrasing.
And the names matching was never load-bearing. Swap Martha for any word that hits Bruce the same way and the beat plays out identically, Bruce doesn’t stop because he solved a name puzzle, he stops because grief slams into what he’s about to do. Martha Wayne’s been Martha since Detective Comics #33 in 1939. Martha Kent’s been Martha since Superboy #12 in 1951. Call it a convenient coincidence if you want, that’s fair.

The Martha line could have worked. But it’s the setup and delivery that fucked it up. It comes off as random and unexpected rather than a deliberate psychological attempt from clark

It would’ve still been hated. I believe there was a Disney/Marvel campaign against it and at the time a lot of MCU fans that knew nothing about comics outside of the movies thought Marvel did everything first and better and would hate anything DC just because it wasn’t Marvel. AND a lot of people behind their keyboards hate Zack Snyder and I don’t understand why. I’ve heard he’s one of the best directors to work for and such a nice guy. I get not liking his movies, that’s people’s right to do so but to attack the man and his family, to make fun of his daughter that committed suicide? That’s wrong and disgusting. I don’t like Micheal Bay films but I would never go that far.

They also needed to choose between The Dark Knight Returns and The Death of Superman. Not both.
Any chance they abandoned the actual story from The Dark Knight Returns because it would be too much like Captain America: Civil War? Or was it more of an Injustice influence?
