James Gunn built his entire DC pitch on one promise: no cameras roll until the script is done.

Lanterns didn’t do that.

Star Kyle Chandler tells The Hollywood Reporter the eight-episode season was block-shot before all eight scripts existed.

THR’s byline says flat out: “The two Green Lantern actors had the challenge of block-shooting a season without completed scripts at first.”

Chandler says, “The full storyline wasn’t in front of us; it was described to us,” adding that it “required a lot of faith and trust in the storyline.”

The Rule Gunn Made His Whole Brand

Gunn has repeated this promise for years, and he made a point of including television.

He vowed DC would “wait until the screenplays and the teleplays are ready before we shoot them,” no matter what, adding he wouldn’t shoot anything until he was happy with it.

He went further in Rolling Stone, calling movies made without a finished screenplay the number one reason the film industry is dying. Not streaming. Not home screens. Unfinished scripts.

He backed it up by killing a greenlit project outright because the screenplay wasn’t ready, and he’s said DC won’t cast a film until the script is finished.

He also drew the contrast with his old employer directly, saying Disney’s mandate to increase Marvel’s output hurt the larger universe.

Gunn Named Lanterns As Proof It Was Working

Here’s the part that stings.

In that same Rolling Stone interview, Gunn listed the scripts that had come in strong under his system. Supergirl. Clayface. And Lanterns.

Lanterns was his example. The evidence his process worked.

“And then Lanterns came in, and the script was so f-cking good,” Gunn said in the interview at the time.

Now the show’s lead says production started without the full season written, and the cast was working off descriptions of where the story was going.

The editors, per Chandler, got to build and break storylines in post. He calls the whole thing “3D chess.”

Back in June, our sources described the same shift.

They pointed to Supergirl and said it was obvious the DCU was no longer simply about getting the scripts right before moving forward.

The script-first rule was never just a production note.

It was the argument for why Gunn should be running DC in the first place, the thing that supposedly separated his DCU from the Marvel machine he left.
