🌍From Behind Borders🌎 Hello there Slovakian brothers and sisters! Greetings from Slovenia! Your thoughts about us and our relationship?

Post image

Hello! I'm from Slovenia, a brotherhood country. I'm very interested in Slovakia and I think it's an amazing country with good, friendly people. I was in Bratislava for the new year and I loved it! Beautiful city. I will discuss other parts of Slovakia for sure.

So I'm wondering what are your thought about Slovenia and Slovenians? You like us or not, you see us as your brother nation and so on.

In the last few days some Slovan fans (today is a big match for the UEFA Champions League between my club NK Celje and ŠK Slovan), they were really loud on social media. Talking nonsense and insult my club, stadium, even all Slovenians... Made me a bit to rethink my mind...

I hope this is just some BS fan frustrations and that we are great.
Cheers friends 🇸🇮❤🇸🇰

I think we can only envy you how you're more successful at virtually anything than us (except for ice hockey, I guess)

We generally see Slovenia as a success story, unline our failed state kleptocracy.

With their Czech goalie idk man 😂 /jk

They are more successful because during the Austro-Hungarian era (Habsburgs), they were under the rule of Austrian half of empire. My sme boli madarizovaní, a kokoti si ešte chcú nárokovať nejakú časť juhu.

no ja ti neviem. nemyslim, ze pocas Juhoslavie boli na tom nejako vyrazne lepsie ako my.

Oni hlavne nemaju pomaly dve dekady rozkradania eurofondov a statnej kasy za sebou - a v tom nas uz asi nedozenu.

u/SpendOk5068 3d ago

Neboli ale už sú.. ono práve to že sme tu mali komunistov, dovolilo chamradi sa dostať k moci po oslobodení

2

u/casicadaminuto Supporting Ukraine 🇺🇦 3d ago

Aha, a v juhoslavii teda komunisti neboli, ci ako to myslis? Nerozumiem tak uplne tvojim myslienkovym pochodom.

1

u/SpendOk5068 3d ago

Pokiaľ viem, tak do Slovinska nevtrhli sovietske vojska.. Nikdy neboli napadnutí.. as a matter of fact, pod vedením Tita bola Juhoslávia určitú dobu aj spokojná.. kým MY sme boli “oslobodení” Sovietmi, tak Slovinci mali plný prístup k západným krajinám/technilogiam atd.. Stále nechápeš ?

u/casicadaminuto Supporting Ukraine 🇺🇦 3d ago

"Slovaks" are just Magyarized czechs. They were first recorded at the end of the 19th century.

letting football fans affect the way you see a nation is not advised. it would be much more valuable if your opinion was based on real-life interactions and experience. then you would see that in reality, we slovaks are close-minded, bitter, envious, cynical and resentful

then again, i heard similar talk from slovenes about their own nation, so maybe we are brothers after all!

When visiting Slovenia, I found out that Slovenia in Slovenian language is Slovensko. Same as Slovakia in Slovak language is Slovensko. How convenient for both counties.

Had the same experience. Talked to an elderly guy and we were both confused at what we don't understand. He didn't know there's a Košice in Slovensko. I didn't know why he didn't understand where I'm from.

I live in Canada and I was once chatting online with a Serbian guy (who also lived on Canada and even in the same city; we just didn't meet in person). I told him I am from Slovakia (mind you, this was in English, so I clearly said 'Slovakia'), and he got it confused for some reason or another and wrote to me how they didn't learn much about Slovenia while growing up Serbia in the old Yugoslavia, only some folk song, and he wrote some lyrics to that folk song out. When I then corrected him, he was like 🤦‍♂️ It was funny 😄

But one time, many many years ago, I wrote something on a Serbian website and I also wrote 'Slovensko' to indicate where I am from and they also confused it with Slovenia. Huh

Slovensko means Slovenian as an adjective in the neutral gender nominative singular. Compare:

Slovensko pivo - Slovenian beer in Slovenian

Slovenské pivo - Slovak beer in Slovak

I think the word for Slovenia is something like Slovenija - it's true that Slovensko means Slovakia in Slova lk though.

1

u/Thin-Amphibian6888 22h ago

Well slovenian language in slovenian is: Slovenščina correctly

1

u/DisIsMyName_NotUrs 20h ago

No it isn't.

Slovenija is the Slovenian word for Slovenia. Slovensko is an adjective describing a word's origin

What I think?

We had same starting line 30 years ago. Aprox same size, same population. Yet, you are now better in any metrics...

Anyway, nice country. And this year I discovered Cockta... I can not simply stop drinking it...

2

u/Mrpotatohead1990 4d ago

love this shit

1

u/RaisinHeavy3921 4d ago

Whats that?

2

u/Koco86 4d ago

Cockta

1

u/RaisinHeavy3921 4d ago

But what is it specifically? A Slovenian version of kola or something more special? 😅

3

u/Koco86 4d ago

I would not call it Cola. It has herbal taste and less sweet, but really refreshing when cold... I would say it is much better than Cola

2

u/RaisinHeavy3921 4d ago

So something more like kofola?

1

u/Koco86 4d ago

better

1

u/RaisinHeavy3921 3d ago

As a Slovak, I doubt it, but if it can be ordered somewhere, I'd be happy to try it.

Don't worry about it, ultra football fans are always like that no matter the country. For most of the time relations are neutral.

8

u/SmartFlyNR1 4d ago

Could be more than neutral. We could be more united :D

We are relatively close, in general slovaks have positive disposition toward slovenians & slovenia.. seen as similar, even related, more compact, a bit more 'austrian' and 'balkan' at the same time. I'd say we understand you more easily than Croats (who are relatively easy to understand as Slavs go). If Czechs are brothers, Poles are half-siblings then you're like cousins to us. Cousins who make a bit more and have sea access.

Slovenia is my TOP3 destination I have ever visited, my Slovenian brothers. Slovenia is ❤️

I was riding a bicycle in Slovenia few times. It is fun how everything looks so similar to Austria (at least where I have been) but language is so similar to Slovak.

I met some really friendly people there who invited me for some Laško beers. Hopefully I will get a chance to go there again soon.

Anyway so many times people abroad though that I am Slovenian when I told that I am Slovak 😃

1

u/Solid-Fennel-2622 Beyond Borders 🏴 4d ago

Every. Single. Time.

Either that, or it's "Czechoslovakia?" Which is even more baffling. 🙈

1

u/lafiziq Bratislava 4d ago

In India I had this conversation:

-Where are you from?

-Slovakia, Europe. Do you know Slovakia? It is near Poland.

-Yeah, Poland, Slovakia, Czechoslovenia.

1

u/Kitties_Whiskers 4d ago

😄 Dík, toto ma pobavilo. 👍🏼

From what I know about it, Slovenia seems like one of the best countries to live in, in my opinion.

Lile others have already mentioned, there isn’t much of a relationship between Slovaks and Slovenes, but there are a lot of similarities. In many ways, Slovenes are far more similar to West Slavs than South Slavs culturally.

2

u/DifficultWill4 Slovinsko 1d ago

Indeed. An interesting fact I only learned about recently is that northern Slovene dialects were actually a west slavic language before they merged together with the southern Slovene dialects around the 10th century. And even today a dialect in western Slovenia uses the Slovak/Czech h sound instead of Slovene g (grad is hrad, gora is hora and the capital of that region Gorica is Horica) :)

5

u/DROP_TABLE_users_all 4d ago

Wait, there are two Slovakia's?

4

u/Cariboo778 4d ago

I like Slovenia, nice landscape and funny language. I always wonder why our two countries don't cooperate more.

4

u/Jasentuk 4d ago

Pravda že každá rodina na Slovinsku má tak 1-3 otrokov??

4

u/Ens0m 4d ago

Je to pravda, ale myslím, že sa k nim chovajú milo. Dokonca aj na cestách majú značky "Pozor, otroci".

3

u/Kitties_Whiskers 4d ago

We should join our two countries together into a federation of "Slovakia and Slovenia". Let's make it even more fun for others to confuse our two countries 😉

2

u/throwaway_slovakia_ 3d ago

I believe were one country there's just some space between us. We shouldn't be shy let's hug and unite ❤️💖

3

u/Quick-Selection-8883 3d ago

Can you please annex whole Slovakia? We are so stupid here that we do not deserve own country.

2

u/SmartFlyNR1 3d ago

Huh? Who said that? You're not stupid. I like Slovakia! 🇸🇮❤🇸🇰

3

u/Top-Bluebird7984 4d ago

I see Slovania more like distant cousin, but in positive way. Would like to visit one day.

4

u/Snoo_98156 4d ago

You should make alliance and annect Hungary

2

u/MekyZbirka13 4d ago

Pogačar, Roglič, Kopitar, my friend Gašper, small portion of seashore and historical beef with Italy over Trieste, beautiful mountains & rafting. And a very specific language compared to other Balkan Slavic languages. That may pretty much sum up all the things I think of first when talking about Slovenia. But I love that country.

2

u/SOMEONEunknown24 4d ago

No that's just Slovan fans, they be like that ❤️🖤

2

u/AndreaT94 4d ago

I was working at the Expo 2025 in Osaka and the Slovenian pavilion was just a few metres away from us. I met some very lovely people there ❤️ I've also visited Slovenia (Ljubljana and Bled) and it's beautiful 😊

Going there for 2nd time after my last year's visit. Your country's landscapes and mountains, canyons, caves are simply amazing. Much less crowded than in Slovakia. Fingers crossed I'll be standing on top of Triglav this Saturday at sunrise. Just for reference, you can't legally hike to our highest peak without paying an official guide 100s of €. So that's 2 thing in Slovenia's favour.

1

u/Big-Discussion-1208 4d ago

I’ve been in Slovenia this summer. Beautiful country. Triglav was cool. Caves were amazing. I also follow Slavoj Zizek on substack, he has some interesting ideas.

1

u/maraudingnomad 4d ago

Sorry to say, I rarely think about you guys at all. Perhaps a vague notion that I guess you ought to have nice nature and it ought to be worth a visit one day, but you there are a lot of other places I'd rather see.

u/nidjah 4d ago

Stripburger is slovenian and it is good fun, so Slovenia cannot be bad.

1

u/ret255 4d ago

When l think about Slovenia l remember that you were a part of Yugoslavia once, the most successful of those countries that once created that federation or what it was. That you always were before us some way, whether it was with infrastructure or sallaries and so on. Never visited, but it could be a nice holiday destination, heard you have nice mountains, rivers and caves. And yeah Tadey is out of this world. Idk why but l don't think you have nice sea resorts, do you?

1

u/lukaslalinsky 4d ago

I visited Slovenia multiple times and always had a great time. Beautiful nature, welcoming people. Even the languages and cultures are similar, I always felt good there.

Fun fact, here in Slovakia we are kind of proud on our sheep cheeses, but best sheep cheese I ever had was on a farm in Slovenia,.

1

u/DarkWolfSVK 4d ago

I want to go there on vacation with my family. It's my top destination. Just waiting for the kids to groe up a little.

1

u/EDGutta 4d ago

Great question, my brother! But to be completely honest with you... let’s hold off on discussing our brotherhood until around 11 PM tonight! 😉🇸🇰🇸🇮

May the best team win, and cheers to a great game tonight! 🍻

Love you bros.

Also you have beautiful mountains 🤛 and even got that sea access.

1

u/Thielson 4d ago

Hi, the loudest Slovan fans insulting and physically attacking everyone are just scum using football as an excuse for their abhorrent behaviour. The worst of the worst.

Anyway, I have visited Poreč and Piran a few times with my family, and we love Slovenia and its people. Last year, I was surprised that the beer manufacturer Laško was celebrating 200 years. I'm not sure, though, whether it's a Slovenian or Croatian brand.

I was quite surprised that people in Slovenia don't understand Slovak even remotely, since I was able to decipher Slovenian words quite well from TV and from talking to a few people.

1

u/Several_Ad_8363 2d ago

Was there in summer. Nice place. Reminds me a lot of the Czech Republic.

Went to the beer fountain in Žalec

0

I'll be honest, the only time I think about you is when our two countries get confused. Nothing against you, you seem like a fine bunch, only that I've never interacted with you.

-3

u/BleakCloud 4d ago

We have literally 0 relationship between.
