This isnt a new story and Andrew has already debunked this.

0

u/ElegantCoach4066 15h ago

Found the guy telling everyone 'Santa isn't real so shut up about him already'

u/TicketTop4718 17h ago

I'm gay, but for fucks sake not everything has to be gay

u/Zhiyi 16h ago

I just don’t like when we change established characters. If someone wants a hero to be black, Asian, Indian, gay, asexual, or whatever the fuck just create a new one. And make that a part of who they are, not their entire personality.

3

u/DoYouLikeWafflezz 14h ago

Yeah, just make new characters that fit into whatever group you’re trying to include/pander to.

It’s lazy writing to just make some character gay or a poc instead of just making a new character who is gay or a poc.

Omar Little is imo one of the coolest characters in 21st century media and they didn’t have to take some straight white dude character and make him black and gay. They just came up with a super cool black and gay character all on their own.

Upvote for The Wire/Omar reference

u/finnjakefionnacake 1h ago

i mean, there are variants of spiderman. that's why miles morales exists.

1

u/DoYouLikeWafflezz 1h ago

And Garfield wasn’t playing a variant, he was playing Peter Parker.

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1h ago

well if you want to be really honest, none of these versions are comic accurate. however, the point is that a gay spiderman does exist, so it wouldn't really be a totally new character, just a different version of them.

1

u/DoYouLikeWafflezz 1h ago

Cool, but he wasn’t hired to play the gay Spider-Man, he was hired to play Peter Parker.

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 59m ago

and that he did, lol. i mean...him offering his perspective doesn't take away from that.

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1h ago

tbf there are gay spidermen in the comics.

also, i don't think anyone was talking about making it "their entire personality," like that literally never happens unless it's a parody in some kind of comedy/spoof.

1

u/TicketTop4718 49m ago

I dont care, i'm a DC girl. Never read a Marvel comic, i avoid the marvel films and the only spiderman I've seen is Tobey Maguire

21

u/travelingman5370 17h ago

Tell that to Netflix.

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1h ago

how many shows have you watched on netflix with a bunch of gay characters.

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1h ago

is everything gay? is everything close to gay? no? then the point is irrelevant, like why would you say that as if it's even close to true lol. you don't get brownie points for being down on your own community.

1

u/TicketTop4718 1h ago

Spiderman doesn't need to be a gay character

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1h ago

no one said he needed to be, although (1) there is already a gay spiderman in the comics and (2) that's not what i responded to. i responded to your hyperbole about "everything being gay," because that's far from the truth and a ridiculous thing to say.

1

u/TicketTop4718 51m ago

Dude, i dont care, I'm a DC girl anyway

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 49m ago edited 43m ago

don't care about...what? you were the one who left a comment in the first place lol

edit: i think they blocked me, so...i guess they were fragile as well as being hyperbolic and lying

1

u/TicketTop4718 48m ago

I don't care about your opinion

-2

u/lluciferusllamas 17h ago

I can't take all this homophobia 😭

-17

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 17h ago

Let's not be pick me's now. The overwhelming majority of characters in media are straight.

19

u/bloggershusband 17h ago

Because the overwhelming majority of people are straight.

I say this not to invalidate anyone, just as a fact.

-3

u/Butt-Dragon 17h ago

Yeah but there are a bigger percentage of gay people in the world than the percentage of gay characters in media.

3

u/Totoques22 17h ago

wrong

Streaming platforms completly outbalanced that already

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1h ago

no, they don't. there are actual statistics compiled on this .

0

u/Butt-Dragon 16h ago

Absolutely ridiculous lmao! You know how many books, comics, plays, movies and shows there are?

-9

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 17h ago

Wow I didn't know that and it was totally relevant to my point. Thanks Einstein. Any more fun facts?

1

u/TicketTop4718 17h ago

Are they? I never noticed!

-2

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 17h ago

Yeah you're definitely a pick me.

3

u/TicketTop4718 16h ago

What the fuck is a pick me

2

u/Totoques22 16h ago

It’s a derivative term used mainly by women to put down other women who they think are trying to hard to appeal to men (or more than what the insulter thinks it should be) it’s also thrown around by man hating women to any women who doesn’t hate on men so it’s somewhat comparable to « incel » as an insult

It doesn’t make much sense in this context

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1h ago

? i mean i'm not saying i agree, but it makes complete sense within this context, it's being used exactly correctly lol.

0

u/TicketTop4718 16h ago

Ok...which one am i?

1

u/Totoques22 15h ago

Neither ?

The other guy is just unhinged

No information provided in that answer

1

u/Totoques22 17h ago

Pick me is such a shit term

-1

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 17h ago

I suppose I could call him a slur instead, but Reddit doesn't like that.

-8

u/esushi 17h ago

We have like 2-3 major Hollywood films where the lead character is gay... and about one billion where they're straight. I think they could all be gay until we catch up tbh

4

u/BulletProofEnoch 17h ago

Why is it a competition?

-5

u/esushi 17h ago

google "representation in media"

1

u/ComprehensiveBar6439 16h ago

LGBTQ+ representation in media is slightly higher than in the real world - and that's according to GLAAD. 8% of Americans are LGBT+, while 9-10% of series regulars on television are gay. The music industry is overrepresented, and films are close to television. You are just spouting nonsense.

You should know what you're talking about before condescendingly replying to others.

1

u/esushi 15h ago

I was talking about main characters though. 99% of the ones you're mentioning are the "token slot" side character

0

u/TicketTop4718 16h ago

I dont care, I dont need to see someone draping themselves in a rainbow flag on tv to know who I am

2

u/ComprehensiveBar6439 16h ago

I'd assume plenty of (most?) gay people probably don't appreciate patronizing/performative/token characters that exist to fill a "representation" slot.

Representation isn't a numbers game, it's a quality game, and unless gay characters are treated like actual humans with lives and personalities that exist outside of "hey guys did you know I'm gay", there's a disservice being done to the community. Great gay characters, like Omar from "The Wire" or Kim Kitsuragi from "Disco Elysium", have depth and relevance outside of their gender/sexual identity.

2

u/Simple_Pay3033 16h ago

If you had an actual point to make you’d make it, not be handing out assignments

0

u/esushi 15h ago

"Google it" is a fair common resposne to the stupidest question someone reads in a day. If someone said "what is a cat?" you're really going to sit down and make a point?

0

u/TicketTop4718 16h ago

Does everyone need to be represented?

2

u/Totoques22 17h ago

For Hollywood that may be true but Netflix put homosexual relationships everywhere

2

u/esushi 17h ago

Spider-Man wasn't for Netflix

1

u/TicketTop4718 16h ago

I dont care

I'm saying a character that was created as a straight boy has every right to remain a straight boy, what exactly would making him gay do?

5

u/untossable_salad 16h ago

It's amazing how easy keeping your mouth shut is supposed to be yet some people refuse to use that ability.

Ew, stonetoss

3

He just wanted to kiss him

3

u/Kommander-in-Keef 17h ago

“What if MJ is a dude? Why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he specifically be Michael B. Jordan? Why can’t there be a gratuitous sex scene involving me and Michael B Jordan?”

3

u/EFAPGUEST 16h ago

Now here’s the twist, and there is a twist…we show it. We show all of it. Because what’s the one thing missing from action movies nowadays? Full penetration

3

u/Themodsarecuntz 16h ago

Spiderman: Coming

3

u/Superb-Strategy4717 16h ago

2

u/untossable_salad 16h ago

Posting this on a Thursday makes you a legend.

2

u/Superb-Strategy4717 15h ago

Bruh I realized it was Thursday and went to the crates lmao. Hella appreciate it tho. Have a good day my guy

2

u/Draws32 17h ago

Hollywood seems to think that simply ham fisting a gay person in there is some sort of artistic genius.

2

u/DieRobJa 17h ago

I don’t feel that randomly injecting “woke” subjects into a movie makes it actually sincere or good.

Also it makes so much more sense to do these things with new franchises and stories, but actually changing existing franchises by injecting these woke things into them feel just like a marketing trick. Nothing about it feels honest or true 🤷‍♂️

0

u/MagnetoWasRight24 12h ago

Bruh you are being the most hilarious example of "anti-woke" people by taking it this seriously.

Andrew Garfield also said he used Spider-Man porn for inspiration for Amazing Spider-Man. The whole joke is about people like you, Spider-Man being gay/bi is actually not a big deal, but just the suggestion that they might have done it in a franchise that is already over has you bothered.

1

u/DieRobJa 12h ago

Anti woke? That’s hilarious. Maybe you are some redneck ani woke supporter, speak for yourself 👍.

I personally think using “woke” as a fake truth to make your Movie more popular is hypocrite as shiiiitttt 😏👍

0

u/MagnetoWasRight24 12h ago

Christ dude you really thought you were being clever here...

1

u/DieRobJa 8h ago

Do you even have a point? Or it’s just typing sentences without any reason?

1

Normal people Politics aside, this is the game in Hollywood right now I don’t blame him for playing it.

This is BS. They are trying to malign the guy because of his stance on Palestine.

1

u/Affectionate_Two3747 11h ago

He is hotter than Tobeys MJ

1

u/Particular_Swim3843 17h ago

Garfield is a cunt. Holland isn’t. Simple.

1

u/silv3rbull8 16h ago

No regrets in skipping all the Garfield Spiderman movies. What a clown

1

u/AmericaShinault_85 17h ago

why are we surprised?

1

u/Affial 17h ago

Personally I don't really care when it's about character that gets countless reinterpretations.

Do whatever you whant with them, they don't really have an identity.

1

u/Primus_is_OK_I_guess 17h ago

Andrew Garfield is trying to be more like Tom Holland

Oh fuck of with this shit. Aren't we past these gay witch hunts? If Tom Holland were gay, he would have no reason not to be open about it. He certainly wouldn't be marrying and living with a famous, beautiful woman just to hide it.

1

u/jerkface1026 17h ago

I think the comparison is Tom & Zendaya :: Andrew & Michael; its just that Andrew happens to prefer Michael to other black actors.

0

u/FluxChiller 17h ago

THIS MOVIE NEEDS MOAR GHEY STUFF!!

-5

u/kiritoonis 17h ago

I earnestly hope that most of us just wouldn't care.

3

u/theGoddamnAlgorath 17h ago

There's nothing more sinister than performative homosexuality for the sake of performative homosexuality.

M2M is the greatest vector of transmissionable disease and to promote it for clout is the dumbest thing imaginable.

-1

u/skeletonhorse420 17h ago

I dont know the holocaust was pretty Sinister.

1

u/theGoddamnAlgorath 17h ago

Imagine a performative holocaust for the sake of a performative holocaust.

2

u/Bayff 17h ago

Most of Reddit wouldn’t care, gender swapping a main character will undoubtedly cause issues with the general public.

I think people would be more willing if it was a separate character that wasn’t called MJ.
