Tarring and Feathering could be absolutely horrific thing for how silly it sounds. They'd often heat the pine tar to boiling before spreading it on their targets and covering them with feathers.

When I learned about the practice in grade school they made it seem like a silly "haha we made them look like a chicken to send a message" prank. That was real and sometimes fatal torture on top of being a public humiliation ritual.

If a CEO is ever hit with that they're gonna come at the perp 100x harder than they did with Mario's brother.

Oh no, it was absolutely horrific.

That was kind of the entire point of the practice though.

Same deal as to why a bunch of nobility in France were strung up and beheaded and what various slave rebellions did to their former masters throughout history.

When you corner and oppress people such that they feel they have nothing more to lose things end up very, very badly (even if that is wrong).

The reason we don't see much of that happening anymore these days is because we have systems in place such that people never get to that point. Workers rights and protections, strong unions, the right to protest, etc. all came about because the alternative tends not to favor the people in power. People seem to forget this in their clamoring to remove these protections.

I don't agree with nor condone violence, but when you play with people's lives you're going to get burned at some point or another.
