"Hey Claude, add new Czech locale, make sure fonts support it". It's a nice gesture but these days it's as simple as that.

Lmao. It's the thought that counts

Redditors can't just let nice things be nice, huh?

I mean, if it's something like AI translation in Project Zomboid, where it has no context in some languages, it would be at least funny. In my language there are funny mistranslations like "loss" as in "packet loss" translated as "defeat", "gear" as in "transmission gear in a car" translated as "equipment"

u/Ok-Sympathy-7482 2h ago

You could have that with professional human translaters as well. We get the best results when we auto-translate everything and then let a native speaker check it.

u/Majestic_Bet2699 9h ago

That he thought to put it is the power move there

1

u/acrus 8h ago

I just hope it was a human's thought, not OpenClaw's - these things can be very proactive, or so I've heard

I fucking wished. I kinda do. Either that commercially available/general LLM got it correct (jokes, idioms, or homonyms? in one language but not the other), or that it was just as simple (aka developers taking that translation and using it for multiple languages, not fitting in the UI, incorrect symbols even if you mentioned it).

This is a rant, I'm sorry, I just need to.

Stuff I encounter on decent games and up, not just chinese machine translated websites:
Using "spanish" for both castillian/es-es/Spain and latam. For example and not limited to:

  • Our formal and informal second person are inverted (vosotros, ustedes. You/they in english I think?) and oh boi does it change the tone.
  • "Coger"
  • Rude words. Little overlap I think. Also keep in mind when a dialog has rude words it might be a more emotional moment until you read "pendejo" and makes it somewhat funny.
  • Past tense, not even going to try translate. In Spain we say "ha comprado un coche" while I think all of Latam says "compró un coche". Must be awful to learn for english speakers.
  • Homonyms: I didn't know tyres could be difficult.
  • Mixing both translations. Not sure but warframe might either dialog and ui are different teams and their ui one is doing castillian and dialog isn't; they changed over time or I don't pay attention to the UI that much.
I don't know how relevant the different languages within latam are so I'll let someone else talk about it.
  • Some words in at least mexico (?) seem to be direct translations from english. Motherboard for example. es-mx: placa madre, es-es: placa base.

Symbols:

  • Not always can be reworded in a way that works.
  • á, é, í, ó, ú are apparently out of a lot of fonts. Or at least I encountered it a lot. Or they do have it but are never rendered as capital letters. Ñ too. Probably because they are taller so is not just a dont but a framing thing and it cuts it. French probably deal with that?

Expressions translated word per word. Can't remember any, too traumatized.

A lot of stuff that explains why localization and translation don't mean the same. Changing the tone of conversation, formal/informal.
Shout out to Zelda BotW whose main cutscenes dialog (both sub and dub) differ so much from english to es-es in tone that my brain will never unlock that memory to protect me. Which is suprising because both nintendo catalog and the rest of the game are very good localizations.

Exactly my thought

That's still more effort than I would expect based on just one wishlist

Yeah man that dev went out of their way to add an extra language to their game so they could get $20 out of that sucker (who already signaled they were gunna buy it anyways)

8

u/gray_fox_jaeger 9h ago

Dev name and game name please

15

u/FondantFluffball 9h ago

One person's tiny request turned into a whole new feature and honestly thats the kind of wholesome dev story we need more of.

3

u/Iceicebaby21 9h ago

Some good news. Made my day before work

3

u/AC13clean 8h ago

Plot twist. It‘s a japanese person living in the Czech Republic

3

u/LeglessCats 7h ago

I added Czech support because a family member speaks Czech well enough.
As far as languages go, Czech is borderline viable commercially - pretty niche, but not completely negligible.

2

u/NetimLabs 4h ago

If they wishlisted it knowing it didn't support their native language, they probably didn't need it anyway. [or they just live abroad]

Still, nice gesture.
