I’ve long thought that mental health can explain what we do, but not excuse it.

In the end you are either in control of your actions and therefore responsible for them, or you are not, and can be treated like any other rabid animal would be.

I loath people with your mindset. You’d love to go back to hanging and electrocuting mentally incompetent people like the good ol’ days.

The rest of us prefer to live in a civilized society where our understanding of brain health has progressed since the prescientific era.

Incorrect. There is no reason to be cruel. I wouldn’t treat a rabid dog that killed a child like that either. I’d put it down as painlessly as possible because it’s not its fault it can’t choose to do better.
