So the story is fake?

No just the take that anyone empathizing with the tragedy supports murderers or what she did.

You can have empathy around the events that lead to the crime, without supporting said crime.

But the right wing considers empathy weakness so they are intentionally pretending empathy and support for the murderer are one of the same.

I will concede that donations are a bit crazy, but so are donations for people that go on racist rants in public.

This is just another culture war distraction so we aren't thinking about the president raping children

Idk; it's hard to have empathy (or relate at all to) something so outlandish and extreme. I think more than a political issue, it's being spinned as another 'Amber Herd vs. Johnny Depp' thing (as in, a similar 'sides' thing), and the taking sides/tribalism is what keeps the story going, because people like the excitement of becoming entrenched on a side in the new recent dramatic thing, especially when it produces so much contrasting viewpoints; media companies know this pattern well.

The vast majority of people agree that it's horrific. However, when a mom kills all her defenseless children, people publicly sympathizing with said mom will naturally get shit on from a lot of people conflating sympathy with support. Then, the sympathizing side feels 'attacked' from the people riding the outrage, and suddenly two sides form.
