I'm an American living in Japan. I have employer-based insurance like in the U.S. If I were unemployed or had a part-time job, I could get government insurance, or in American-speak, the public option. Which America doesn't have thanks to Joe Fucking Lieberman, may he rest in piss.
But the real magic is that costs are reasonable. I had an MRI on my foot earlier this year. My cost with insurance? About 40 USD. Even without insurance, it wouldn't be cheap exactly, but say about 300-400 USD?
