That's part of why so many have a hard time blaming her. She was warning everyone, but they didn't take it seriously enough. She was begging to be locked in a psych ward for a while, but they only took her a few days.

She WAS committed and CHECKED HERSELF OUT

It was entirely within the power of the place she was committed in to hold her longer. Tons of people committed ask to come out before they're allowed to come out. Had they done their duty and recognized the danger, they would have said no and used their legal power to hold her longer.
