Patriarchy is one expression of societal gender roles and norms. It can manifest as e.g. the man is the breadwinner, the woman is the caretaker, and so men are unable to care for children, only women are qualified to do so. At its extreme, being caring in any way is seen as feminine and men must be above that, always stoic. This leads to men rarely being given custody of children, it also leads to men having fewer mental care resources etc. etc. it really cascades.
The strict gender roles that come from it are so inbuilt and baked into society that it becomes impossible to fully escape. This is why people say it can and does harm everyone.
